Beautiful old active historic church. Worth seeing. Church is open to respectful visitors. A great place to stop at and meditate or say a prayer. Right off the main thoroughfare. Gives a look at the religious heritage if the original German settlers.

“Painted Church, Welcoming Community”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2014

St. Mary's Church is as welcoming as it is beautiful. I attended 11:15am Mass while on vacation. They invite visitors for tours following both 11:15 and 9am Sunday Mass, and you need not be Catholic nor must you have attended Mass in order to join the tour. The Mass I attended last about an hour and fifteen minutes.

The architecture and symbolism embedded in every element of the church is simply stunning. Also be sure to visit the old church next door, built in 1847? (that year might be wrong, somewhere around that). Also be sure to notice the painted wooden pipe organ, one of only 3 working wooden pipe organs in the US.

The stained glass is equally impressive. Imported from Germany, the colors were bright and vivid even on the dark, rainy day we were there.

No matter your faith background or spirituality, you will be moved by the artistic beauty in this church.

“A Place of Calm and Serenity”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2014

One always hears of Schulenburg as the town with the painted churches, so we were delighted to go inside St. Mary's and discover it was a painted church as well. So serene and beautiful. A nice place to give thanks for a safe journey and have a little prayer time.

“Beautiful”

A church that looks like a church should be - not some ultra-modern barn. Catholic or not a visit to the church is well worth a visit.

“Wonderful experience”

The architecture was magnificent. We attended a mass and were in awe of the Church and its people. We even had dinner with a "future priest."
