“An Historic Gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014

First time staying at The Galvez - it's beautiful, well appointed, and classy. Our room faces the ocean which was a plus. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful - oleander gardens. Room was small but efficient, good bed, wi-fi, the usual amenities. Parking convenient. Restaurant "OK". The place is historic which you can feel when you stay here. I loved it.

The Hotel Galvez is a distinctive, timeless hotel in an ideal location for a quick trip to Galveston Island. True hospitality was demonstrated by the hotel guest services staff.

We were looking forward to two weekends at the Galvez while our home was on the Galveston Historical Foundation Homes tour. We liked our first room the first night even though we had north view (had hoped for a Gulf view). However, at 3:20 am an ear splitting noise occurred in the hall waking me out of a dead sleep. Sounded like air in pipes. This continued on until 7:30 am. Called the front desk regarding the noise and lack of sleep. Leaving the hotel at 8am, dropped by the front desk to confirm request of room change. Was told we would have a new room when we return.

Had already heard from others staying that weekend to not be near the ice machines - very noisy. We met 6 couples requesting room changes.

Back to hotel at noon, no room yet. The two women at the front desk could not make a decision on anything, just stare at their computer screen. "well, the rate you have, we don't have a room in that category". I had been awake since 3:20 am - not in a really good mood.
Went to the pool bar (very nice) to wait. Left our cell phone number for desk to call when another room was ready. At 3PM, husband checked at desk, nothing yet. At 3:30pm I went to desk. Was told they didn't have a number to contact us, that we were being upgraded to a "spa room". Fine - day wasted. 8 hours waiting for another room with no apologies.
We got the feeling they know there are issues but are far from sympathetic.

Spa room and bathroom was half the size of first room. Very cramped. We did no feel this was an upgrade. Could care less about the "spa shower". Really was looking forward to a long tub soak. As tired as we were, didn't say anything, just wanted a good nights sleep.
No noise that night, but then bill had some odd charges on it. This was resolved with by the manager at the front desk.
Front desk manager acknowledged our problems and told us the following weekend he would "upgrade us to a Spa room with Gulf view.
Same small room but thought view would be a nice change.
Checked in on Friday - same type room next door to previous room - city view,. Didn't say anything as all we really wanted was a good night's sleep.
Blinking message light on phone which continued the entire weekend, even after telling front desk who said they would take care of it. Had to put a towel over light every night as light never went out.
Check out Sunday - same odd charges on bill. Desk clerk wanted to fill out some paperwork - told her had same problem the prior weekend which was immediately resolved by the manager.
Finally resolved, but the clerks just can't make a decision!

Also - took my own pillow the second weekend. Their pillows are like bricks!
Other issue was the room was warm and muggy. Thermostat said 70, no way. Thermostats need to be calibrated. Cooler in hallway than room!

The plusses - Valet staff is wonderful as is housecleaning. But the front desk is not an asset to this hotel. Will not stay there again and never recommend to anyone. We have stayed in hotels all over the world and never experienced the indifference the front desk at the Galvez displays.

Room Tip: Do not be near an ice machine on any floor, east end of 5th floor has loud pipe noises in hall in th...

My husband and I stayed here the night before we took our first Carnival cruise. The staff at the hotel was helpful and able to answer any questions we had. Our room was great and very comfortable. The best part was the valet parking service for our car. It was safe and sound for the duration of our trip. We were shuttled right to the ship and picked up promptly after the cruise.
