I found The Strand to be charming! Yes, it's touristy--a cruise ship was docked just a few blocks away. That's what you should expect on an island. There are t-shirt and souvenir shops, but there are also some higher end shops, food, bars, etc. It's the architecture that makes it charming, and the people working in the stores who I found to be very excited to share Galveston with us by suggesting other places to visit, and talking about city history. I loved it!
