This was my first visit to Galveston. Originally I wanted a view of the ocean, but that view would have included the very busy traffic between the hotel and beach. There was one hotel on-line that was directly on the beach, but it was really pricey. Therefore instead of booking on-line, we winged it and decided to go to Galveston without a reservation. We arrived at Galveston and took advantage of one of the attractions on our Island pass (Aquarium), then ate lunch before going on our hotel quest. The hotels beachside looked nice, but there was too much traffic, noise and congestion, so we went harbor side. I remembered seeing the Harbor House on-line, so we checked it out. They had a very nice big room - available for our 3 night stay - with a great view of the harbor! We enjoyed watching all the ships coming and going. The beds were extremely comfortable - Beauty Rests. Parking was $10 per day - great because we were able to walk to almost all the attractions we wanted to see. The Lone Star oil rig museum was just across the parking lot & The Strand shops and restaurants were only a couple blocks away. We took the Cool Tour - we just made a phone call, and they picked us up in front of the hotel. We took advantage of the free shuttle between the Harbor house and their sister hotels to get to the Seawall attractions. The only time we took the car during our stay, was to go on the free ferry ride to explore Bolivar Peninsula. The hotel staff were always interested in hearing about our Galveston adventures - all were super nice, especially Linda. On my next trip to Galveston, I will definitely stay at the Harbor House, but I'll book in advance. We were told by our Cool Tours guide (Sue) that we were really lucky to just walk in and get a room - because the Harbor House is usually booked solid most of time.
