Owner description: Restored to its turn of the century splendor, the 28,000 square-foot, four-story structure was completed in 1895. Today, our guests visit 20 rooms on a self-guided tour that depicts the home life of a powerful Texas family. The Moodys established one of the great American financial empires. Based on cotton, it grew to include banking, ranching, insurance and hotels. The mansion is one of the finest places to visit, a trip back in time. Touring the museum should definitely be on the top on the list for things to do on Historic Galveston Island. I have driving by the Moody Mansion for years and never stopped. This trip we decided to take the tour and see inside. Photos are not allowed inside the mansion but are allowed in the garage where a few of the old Moody cars are displayed.
I suggest a tour but there was nothing there that compels me to return.

We decided to see the Moody Mansion on a hot day to get out of the sun. I expected this to be a quick tour of a few rooms and then done.

You start in the garage that houses three of the families vehicles. There are many interesting facts to read about. Next the guide takes you through the mansion pointing out history about the family and Galveston. Though you go through just two of the four floors of the mansion, there is plenty to see.

We had three teenagers with us and they were actually interested in the mansion and talked about it at dinner. All in all it turned out better than expected.

The Moody Mansion is beautiful. All of the items and the museum still belong to the Moody family and many are original. They suffered hurricane damage and are still recovering from it. Worth you while. The docents are extremely knowledgeable.

While not as grand in architecture as the Bishop's Palace, this stately home is a must for anyone who is really interested in learning about Galveston history. The home is still beautifully furnished with items left by the families who lived there. All renovations have been done with the same material as the original. You will see that care is taken to make the home as beautiful as it was during its glory years. There is no peeling wood or water stains in this beautiful home.

Self-guided tours are not available and guests should prepare for the guided tour to take a little over an hour in most cases. The tour guides really know their history and great anecdotes about the Moody family. If you are in a hurry or have a limited schedule, it would be best to save this tour for another day.

We tried to go to the mansion and arrived at the wrong time for a tour. They only do them on the hour. My son went to look at a car and the lady working there yelled at him to get away from the car. Not a place for children.
