“The Best Museum in Galveston”
Reviewed 20 January 2010

We parked our car in the area in front of the Ticket office and proceeded to the main floor of the exhibit. As the museum was scheduled to close in 45 minutes, we were not sure if we would have enough time to see it all, but the staff assured us that we would be allowed to come back the following morning to finish our tour, so we took our time. The museum has three floors of models and interactive displays, videos about the drilling procedure, from oil exploration to actual drilling. The second floor, especially was interesting as it gave large models explaining drilling, geology, oil well servicing and production. There is also a skywalk outonto the drill floor of the rig. The most interesting part is probably the area showing how the people live and work there. I think the tour is best taken when there are few people around, so that one can really take time to understand the exhibits. We spent almost four hours there. A must to see in Galveston.

“Visit a real oil rig! (now retired and made into a museum)”
Reviewed 30 April 2007

Hubby and I visited the Ocean Star while in Galveston for a business conference. This museum is operated by the Offshore Energy Center and is located at Galveston's Pier 19.

We entered a small building that contains a gift shop where we paid our admission: $6 for adults, $5 for age 55 & older, $4 for students age 7-18, and free for children 6 & under.

We walked a long walkway up to this real, honest-to-goodness retired oil drilling rig into a very interesting world of offshore drilling and production. The tour is self-guiding and you can start off with a video, then you can spend as much or as little time as you want.

Inside the museum was very nice and spacious. There were displays about how it's decided where to drill, how the rigs are built and transported, life while working on one of these mini-cities, etc. There are videos, interactive displays, not to mention the oil rig itself, all very nicely done. I especially enjoyed learning what a worker's person life is like when working away from home for such long periods of time.

You can also go right out onto the deck of the rig to get a close-up look at the tower and drilling machinery. Amazing how large it is when you're right up next to it! This was a very worthwhile stop!

The whole museum is wheelchair accessible.

There is no designated parking lot for the museum, and there is no free parking nearby. We parked in a $5/day lot and walked a short distance to the museum.
