“This is a must see attraction.”

This is another Galveston attraction we have passed by for years but with four full days this trip we wanted to get in everything we could.
If you don't know the story of the 1900 Galveston hurricane you don't know Galveston. The photos and commentary taken from old journals will leave you speechless and somber. No one spoke a word as we left the theater.
This is a must see attraction.

“Good overview of the Great Storm”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

I have read Isaac's Storm and seen the PBS version of the book. This was well-done since it showed photos and was more focused on the over-all storm instead of individual stories. It was good to see before sight-seeing on the island. We also saw the Jean Lafitte movie which wasn't quite as good, but did share important historical information.

“The great storm”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

We stopped in to see the film on the 1900 hurricane that devastated galveston. The film used a lot of old photos to tell the story. Only $6 to enter and worth it, but would not be worth more. Theater is very comfortable and close to,restaurants on the pier.

“Visit at least once”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

One item which I thought we’d get a more historical bang for our buck was the Pier 21 Theatre, which had a film on 1900 Hurricane. Finding Pier 21 was easy (as they’re all marked with bright red flags), but find where to park was more difficult (as that wasn’t very well marked). We did find the public lot, and the theatre would validate your parking for about two hours, so that’s a good little tidbit to know.

The hurricane that devastated Galveston in 1900 was aptly named “The Great Storm,” as it’s been the worst one to hit there in recorded history. At that time, the island was only about eight feet above sea level, so a thirty-foot storm surge wielded massive destructive power. The film showed the early footage of this thriving port city during the height of the cotton boom, followed by an explanation of the tragic events, and then the newsreels of the aftermath.

Part of the presentation also showed how the entire city was lifted about eight feet, and the twenty-foot Seawall was built to protect against future storms. It took a couple years to complete, and the millions it took to build where in the currency of the day (so a similar undertaking today would be in the billions, in order to put that in perspective). There were many at the time who felt spending so much was foolish. But when a hurricane in 1915 rolled through the area, and most of force was deflected by the Seawall, it showed this was well-worth the money. As bad as Alicia and Ike were when they hit, their effects were also minimized because of this too.

The film was short, and while some good history, it should've been a bit longer. Going once to see this is good.

“One trip is enough but cool”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

They only show 3 shoes and they are kind of expensive for such short shows. There is a pirate movie, a 1900 storm movie and some other historical one. It was cool, but one trip is enough.
