Galveston showed Ike that they wood not be undone by a surge of seawater. I'm sure they wont last forever so enjoy them while you can.

These works of art salvaged from the live oak trees killed by the Hurricane Ike storm surge are beautiful. Unfortunately there don't seem to be as many left as there were last year. I remember reading that the city of Galveston wanted the "dead trees" removed. Maybe that is what happened to some of them? See them soon. They are getting rare.

Saw many interesting tree sculptures while touring the island. Those I remember are a guitar, dog standing on two legs, holding onto a fence, and the Tin Man & Toto from the Wizard of Oz. Fun to see these sculptures & learn the history behind them!

Of all the things we got to see touring the city, I got the biggest kick out of the tree sculptures. After the hurricane killed many of the large oak trees in town, several of the homeowners decided to have their trees carved into some very artistic pieces. Don't leave town without seeing a few of them.

we were looking for something to do after dinner; before getting the kids into the hotel pool and then bed. So I decided to see how many we could find without any guidance other than they are somewhere in the historic district. We did ok we spotted at least 6 of them just driving around. They are awesome works of art that were sprung from a tragedy. It was worth the 20 minutes or so of driving around. Next time we'll see if we can get a map of the locations first; I'm guessing from the visitor's center?
