“When we finished eating we were irrelevant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2014

I ate here recently and had dinner service at the bar with a family member. The restaurant is perhaps the most popular in Galveston for higher end dining and we were ready to wait for a table, as we had no reservations, but ended up getting very lucky and landed two spots at the bar during the height of dinner service, Make no mistake, people do not come here to drink. They come here to eat and do so at the bar if they can. A spot at the bar is as coveted as a spot in the dining room on a weekend. Suffice it to say, we had great service, great food, and even great conversation with the bar tenders on our visit as long as they thought we were spending money. But the second, literally the second, our plates were cleared and the bar tenders felt we were done we might as well have been in Siberia. After lots of warm conversation from the staff, we were ignored. Our waters were not filled, we were not asked it we wanted another drink, which we did. The objective was clear---clear the seats, this even though there appeared to be no wait and even though we were seated at the bar. The bar staff went from super warm to super cold in a heart beat the second they thought we might be done spending money. That left a very sour--almost three star---taste in our mouths. But the food here is that good and so I still give it a four star (five stars would have been forthcoming with better service). If you are spending well-north of 100 bucks for dinner for two and you are sitting at a bar, that, to me, deserves not only good service, but great service until the moment you walk out the door, not the moment the bartenders think that you are no longer a revenue source.. Dinner doesn't stop when the plates are cleared. The crap service at the end very nearly ruined a quite excellent meal for us.

Every upscale local diner knows Paco. This is a family run restaurant that has impecable service and excellent food. Paco the owner is always on hand to welcome you and take care of all your dinning needs. No shorts at the tables but you can sit at the bar. Reservations recommended

“First night in Gaveston”

Wow - rates among the top ten restaurants we've been to over the past five years! We were initially concerned by neighborhood and the outside appearance. Food was outstanding from the calamari appetizer (a meal in itself) theshrimp dinner was outstanding, sourdough bread, and the tres latte cake! Wait staff was attentive...felt like a luxury cruise ship staff. Expensive but worth the visit....we were under dressed in jeans and a polo shirt and my wife had a jeans skirt but dressy blouse...fortunately we were within dress code (no shorts or sandels)

“Best in Galveston”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2014

Excellent wait staff, menu with good options, ok atmosphere. Our choices were prepared perfectly and I like the way they served both of us at the same time. Saw this at other tables as well. They seem to take pride in what they do. I'd really give 4.5 stars, but there is no option for that. Much better than Landry's - not even close.

“Pricy and Exactly what you pay for, Excellent!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014

We went on a business dinner in April (2014) to Rudy and Paco's after finding out another local establishment was full. I'm so glad we did. Food was Excellent!

Quaint little place, very crowded, and loud but in a good way. It has a very dark setting, full bar, and incredible wait staff. I have eaten all over and can say this was top notch, right up there with some of the best. They have a great menu and a large wine selection.

I ordered Red Snapper and it was an excellent choice. We also had Bread Pudding for dessert. I only order Bread Pudding in the Golf and this did not disappoint. We finished off a few bottles of wine over hardy conversation. Definitely a great place.

The Breakdown:

The Good:
* Would be great for a romantic setting
* Excellent food
* Top notch staff
* Seriously... try the bread pudding
* Well worth the extra coin to have this quality of meal

The Bad:
* Was a little difficult to get our business group smashed in an already crowded place
* Definitely not a quiet environment if you are looking for that
* May have a wait during peak hours

Overall, excellent place. I am thinking of taking my wife on a weekend getaway to Galveston. If I do, this is on the top of the list for dinner one night.
