Ranked #4 of 43 things to do in Granbury

Attraction details
Owner description: The museum is housed in an authentic old western jail built in 1885 and located just off the northeast corner of the town square. The museum preserved the upstairs jail cells and hanging gallows just as they were when the County used it as a jail. The main floor houses exhibits on Hood County history covering David Crockett's descendants, General Granbury's tombstone, the Colony, Jesse James, John Wilkes Booth, Bell Starr, Comanche Peak, Barnard's Trading Post, the Brown family piano, and much more. It is recommended to call museum in advance.

If you love history you will enjoy the museum and it's on the square so it's easy to get to. It's across from the Nutt House guess it should be LOL

“Unexpected Pleasure”
Reviewed 25 April 2013

The jail has a great history, but do not just read the exhibits and leave. Talk to the volunteers. They have the real history and they have a passion to tell the stories. Interesting place. Possibly haunted. The kids (4/7) were a bit too young, but they still talk about their experience in the jail cell and the ghost.

“A treasure-trove of exciting history”
Reviewed 26 March 2013

The old jail museum was our favorite stop on our last visit to Granbury. The guides were friendly and quite knowledgeable. I would suggest taking the tour with a guide first and then go back to view the displays after you know a little more about what they mean.

There are many exciting tales highlighted in the museum. There were jail breaks and wanted outlaws. A botched hanging. Davy Crockett's wife lived in town. There was military history from multiple wars, and history of surrounding communities that no longer exist. We could have stayed there for hours reading all the info but our feet got tired! I wish someone would compile all that info in a book. The volunteers and curators have amassed an impressive collection.

“Unique History”
Reviewed 12 February 2013

Very interesting place full of history, although it seems the docents can talk for hours. Rooms of displays tell the story of Granbury and the upstairs jail is open to explore.

“Need to See This”
Reviewed 7 February 2013

I never knew there was so much history right outside Fort Worth. The County Jail was just spectacular. Our host was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable, not only in the history of the jail, but with the town history as well. It was great to see how everything tied together. There were so many things to look at and learn about, and the jail cells upstairs were very interesting. I would go to see this again, there is just so much history to it, you are bound to miss something the first few times. *** The Ghost Hunters from SyFy channel had just spent the night in the jail the night before we went ***
