“World-class company”
Reviewed 2 November 2013

HGO has been around for decades and seems finally to be gaining the international reputation they deserve. The casts are consistently top-notch, with many names that sing at major houses throughout the world; the productions are visually stunning; and the HGO orchestra stacks up well against any opera house around. English translations on surtitles and detailed synopses and essays in the program books make opera-going an easy and fun experience even if you're not a fanatic.

“First rate in all aspects”
Reviewed 3 October 2013

I was particularly struck by the lighting and staging. The performance itself went flawlessly and it was with an obvious abundance of talent both on, and off stage. I don't believe any opera aficionado will come away disappointed.

On the down side, the cheap seats are located on a mindbendingly steep slope. I joke with you not: if you are a skier, this would be a badddd black slope. If you go for the cheap seats, hold on to grandma and the kids. I would be amazed to learn that no one has been hurt here.

“World Class Opera Here in Houston!!!”
Reviewed 9 September 2013

I am always amazed at the fantastic productions in Houston. Tristan and Isolde, Il Trovatore, The Barber of Seville, La Boheme(at Miller Outdoor Theater), La Traviata(with Renee Fleming), Ariadne auf Naxos, ect. have all been amazing. Thank you for the desire to bring world class singers to Houston. Looking forward to this year.

“Lovely Place”
Reviewed 18 June 2013

I have been here twice now, once for "The Nutcracker" and again for "Don Giovanni". Both performances were lovely. The Opera house is charming and the seat are relatively comfortable. There are plenty of restrooms and little bars if you want a glass of wine (or whatnot) to go with your performance.

My only complaint is that, if you are there for opera, be sure NOT to sit too near the front if your opera is not in English (which they usually are not). The screen with the translations it right above the stage, so you will be craning your neck to ready it. Other than that, I really enjoy going here!

“Classic and Classy”
Reviewed 28 May 2013

The HGO seems to be getting better each year for the last several years. Beautiful voices, excellent staging, engaging interpretations and a recently staged, surprisingly wondeful. mariachi opera.
