I recently stayed at this hotel on a business trip. This wasn't our first choice, because of location, but it worked out well. The hotel was clean, the staff was friendly enough, and even the parking was quite convenient with a nice sized lot behind the hotel. The only downside to this hotel seems to be location, unless you are attending something at the convention center or the Toyota center, in which case it would be an ideal location. There didn't seem to be much within close walking distance to the hotel in the way of restaurants or nightlife. It was however, very easy to drive through downtown and there seemed to be good cab service. it was also easy to get on I-45 for the drive back to the airport. the hotel was nice and quiet and like I said before, it was clean and the morning breakfast was quite good. I also liked that they had different types of pillows (soft or firm) which was monogrammed on the pillow case. Neat touch.

To pay $700 for three nights at Holiday Inn Express does not really make me very smart...more like desperate, since there was a convention I was attending near-by.
My feeling is that all the hotels on a walking distance from the Convention Center do the same thing - overprice their guests.
Hotel was good, within its category, worm breakfast included in the price was also OK, no problems there.
Somebody had a TV on entire night, from 10 pm to 7 am next day, not sure why, but I could hear it from the adjacent room.

Room Tip: Get the room on the top floor.

This Holiday Inn is very good at what it needs to be; A Close to the Convention Area, basic hotel with business traveler amenities. Its clean, run professionally and typical of Holiday Inn's Express offerings. Given the choice though, you would rather be at the Hilton. Especially in some of Houston's car wash rain, like this morning where the few blocks of uncovered transit to the Convention Center resulted in soaked everything. Aside from that, however, its a nice place to stay on business.

Room Tip: Four floors here....so higher and far from the elevators is good.

Attended a Houston Astros game on 2 Apr 2014. I've stayed in this area before for business but did not what to pay the price for a high end hotel like Hilton or Embassy Suites. Reception was quick and efficient. The room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was the norm for this type hotel. Definitely recommend this hotel if you're looking for a good, efficient hotel within walking distance of the downtown sports venues and the convention center.

This has to the best bang for the buck when attending any George R Brown or Toyota Center event. Walking distance to both sites. Was disappointed that we went to Breakfast at 10am this morning and it was all put away and they had told us Breakfast served until 10:30. I am a IHG preferred guest and nothing was done.

If you don't want to read too much, I'll summarize by saying that two words best describe this Holiday Inn: good enough.

I was in town for a conference at the Hilton Americas, but that hotel is about $500 per night, whereas the Holiday Inn Express is the only one within walking distance that takes the government rate. My only other experience at a Holiday Inn was during a high school band trip in Orlando where they decided it was completely appropriate to host a group of high schoolers and a pornography convention at the same time, and the Houston Holiday Inn was definitely a lot better than that.

The common areas were surprisingly nice. They had a pool and hot tub on the first floor, a few sitting areas, and a small, but very well-maintained fitness center with two treadmills, an elliptical machine, a recumbent bike, and a common TV. Everything in the common areas also seemed really clean. I wasn't a huge fan of their continental breakfast, and the hot items looked pretty terrible, but they did have coffee, cereal, milk, fruit, toast, and other basics, so anyone could probably find SOMETHING they like.

Service was fantastic. Every employee I encountered during my 5-night stay was incredibly nice, helpful, and even cheerful. The auto checkout process also made my life easier; they just slip the bill under the door on your checkout day and charge the credit card on file unless you go to the front desk and tell them otherwise. Wifi worked well in every part of the hotel I went to, and it's free.

So why only three stars? The room itself wasn't great. Most components were fine. The beds and pillows were comfortable, and the TV worked fine, and it was nice that they had a mini fridge and microwave in case I wanted to buy food or heat up leftovers. The thermostat, however, was a huge problem. It seemed to only have two settings: too cold or hot and humid. I woke up in the middle of the night every single night feeling either chilly or sweating profusely, and having to readjust the thermostat.

The shower was an even bigger problem. On the plus side, there was consistent hot water, but the shower head has an extremely wide spray, and the shower curtain rod is positioned such that there is a one-foot gap between the curtain and wall, so the water gets all over the floor. I usually participate in hotel programs that allow you to reuse towels, but at this hotel it was impossible, because I needed almost all the towels to soak up the water on the floor so I would trip and fall.

Also, while the bathroom was cleaned well on a daily basis, you could tell it hadn't been deep cleaned in a few years, if ever. For example, looking at the shower head or in that drain hole thing on the back of the sink literally made me nauseous because of all the mold and lord only knows what else that was growing in there.

Despite the problems, I would definitely stay in this Holiday Inn Express again if I had to be in this particular area on a budget. None of the problems were dealbreakers for the price, but if I could afford to stay elsewhere, I would have stayed elsewhere.

I came to Houston for a conference held at the Hilton Americas. The Holiday Inn was recommended as close...and it was....within very easy (5 min) walking distance of the convention centre.
The staff are friendly and efficient and my room, whilst basic, was clean and tidy with a comfortable bed. Free wifi worked well, just getting maxxed in the 6pm-11pm time frame.
The free breakfast isn't great but it's free and there is plenty of healthy fruit. One criticism here is that the juice machine often runs out of whatever they use and pushes out water.
The biggest drag I had here was the tiny gym. It proved impossible during my stay to get onto a machine at all but this is why I carry a TRX around with me. However for those who love a session on the treadmill you'll find the facilities here pretty sparse and overloaded at peak times.
Apart from that, it wasn't expensive and I'd be happy enough staying here again.
