I've stayed here a number of times and there are definitely good rooms and bad rooms. On my trip before this I had a bad room (small, dark and overlooking the aircon ducts - sorry can't remember the number) so this time they upgraded to to a mini suite. This was really nice. The bed was comfortable, the room was spotlessly clean and I had lots of space. There was also a little unit with microwave and mini hotplate, plus cutlery, etc. So based on this room, I had a great stay. The free breakfast is good, the happy hour and milk and cookies at 10.00pm are a nice touch. It's also well located in downtown. So, my recommendation is that if you get a good room you should have a good stay.

Absolutely loved this hotel. The room was very spacious, the pool is lovely, the cookies are great, and the staff was wonderful. We hosted a work function there and the events people were excellent, too.

The Magnolia Hotel occupies the former Shell Company Headquarters in downtown Houston. The building, which was built in 1926, was formerly the tallest building in the city. The owners remodeled the building in 2003 into a very contemporary hotel, but retained many of the classic features from the original look. The hotel price included extras such as a breakfast buffet (way beyond your normal continental routine), free WiFi, a two free drink happy hour, and cookies/milk in the evening. The hotel pool and fitness room are on the top floor with a nice view of the city. The pool is a bit small, and really only good for wading. The fitness room is large, with machines and free weights. The hotel offers valet parking and there are numerous garages in the area. Location was convenient to the Main Street train line, MinuteMaid Stadium, the downtown bar scene and is just a short drive to the Museum District. Our experience with the staff was very positive; the valets jumped to help us each time we left or arrived at the hotel. Minibar and lounge drink prices were high ($21 for two cocktails) but likely in the norm for the area. One last note, while we felt completely welcome, we did note the lack of children of any age at the hotel. The hotel primarily seemed to appeal to younger people without children, or those whose kids have already left home.

I stayed at this hotel for one night on a business trip to Houston. I have to say, this is probably one of the best (if not the best) business-oriented hotels I have ever stayed at. The rooms were very nice - comfortable bed, lots of space, large bathroom. Beyond that, the service and amenities at the hotel were fantastic. The hotel offers a free "happy hour" for all guests where you can have two free alcoholic beverages each evening in their lounge area. Breakfast is also included in the price and while not a huge selection, I found the quality to be very high (sometimes quality is more important than quantity!). I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting downtown Houston.

Very nice hotel. Valet was a plus. Continental breakfast spread was great. We got a discounted rate because of a wedding we attended, otherwise it would generally be out of our price range.

I recently stayed at the Magnolia Hotel in Houston to take in some Astros' games. I can honestly say that after my stay I didn't have one complaint or criticism regards the hotel. My room was very comfortable with all the necessary amenities. No microwave although I didn't need it. The elevators were fast and the longest I had to wait was about a minute. The exercise room was well equipped and a great view from the top of the building although the pool is quite small - narrow and short. Great location with easy access to public transit - bus and light rail - which was convenient since I didn't have a car. Also numerous restaurants and pubs in the general area and a 7-10 minute walk to Minute Maid Park. I didn't partake of any of the complimentary breakfasts so can't comment on them. Happy hours in the lounge/restaurant with a complimentary drink was a nice touch. A downtown map was also attached to the room key card which proved to come in handy.I was originally booked at the Hilton; but due to some generator problems I was switched to the Mag. My good fortune and all in all the hotel felt like home.
