I was in Houston attending a work conference. The last night of the conference was a catered event at the Heritage Society Museum. I used to live in Houston many years ago and had no idea about this little gem right at the base of downtown Houston! It was a fabulous setting for dinner outside with the tall buildings overlooking us. The different houses within the museum were gorgeous and so well maintained. The tour guides were knowledgeable and so fun to chat with. Coming from all over the US, we all enjoyed listening to the history of Houston. Great find!

We attended an evening function here recently - this old structure of Houston historical origins, sitting beneath the skyscrapers... What a contrast! Knowledgeable "re-enactors" visited our table giving us tie-bits of historical facts... A magician, as well... and a real longhorn - all in a nice garden setting. The Museum actually has regular hours where visitors can learn about Houston history and how this thriving metropolis got its start in the wilds of the Texas Gulf Coast...

Highly recommended as a "non-commercial" tourist stop... Or one to visit, if you never have, as a local learning about the history of your own town!

In Houston the weather plays a big part in having fun doing things that involve walking and sightseeing. We had wanted to check this place out for years but if the weather was good and we had the time the museum was closed. When everything lined up for us to go it was worth the wait and planning. It is a wonderful place to learn about Houston and South Texas Heritage and the buildings are beautiful and the staff knowledgeable and helpful.

Great place to visit during Christmas season-the homes are decorated and have period guided tours. Very festive!
