“Awesome Tasty Place”
Reviewed 9 October 2013

I went to Mamak for the first time and I was pleasantly pleased with their food. Very different yet appealing taste. Definitely need to order the fried fish and stir fried flat rice noodles. The atmosphere is very friendly with good service. Also the interior decoration is very modern and clean unlike most Chinatown restaurants.

“Good food, nearly authentic”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

Nice variety of Malasyian dishes, plenty of seating, friendly staff. Food a bit more westernized than in Malaysian restaurants in NYC or Philly China town, but tasty. The Roti Chenai, Keo Teow were fabulous as was the Ice Katchang and Cendol. My Malaysian family loves eating here and so do I. Been there many times since it opened and every time I visit Houston and have never disappointed. For the variety, and price this is a terrific ethinic food value.

“Food was good, but not nearly spicy enough. Service was OK.”
Reviewed 7 May 2013

Since they are right between two other Malaysian Restaurants they have stiff competition but seem to be holding their own.

We found the food to be OK, but lacking flavor. Perhaps they feel that Texan's can't handle the real thing, which is a big issue for me.

Large menu, so everyone can find something that they like.

Service was a bit disorganized.

They have no liquor license, so BYOB is OK. That is a plus for me.

“good flavor”
Reviewed 28 April 2013

Houston is a huge city and interestingly Mamak chose to open its location right across the parking lot from its competitor. It is basically a Chinese Malaysian eatery trying to do the many great offerings from the culinary paradise of Malaysia.
Th roti telur was decent but not the curry sauce that accompanied the bread. Surprisingly the Hainan chicken was well made given the fact the American chicken industry soaks chicken in brine and that changes the texture of cooked chicken. The dish was nicey poached and chicken texture firm with a decent chili kalamansi dipping. Prawn noodle was also decent but not the over cooked noodles and the same for the Asam Laksa. Turning to the sweet ending, ABC was just so so but the chendol was a disaster.
Overall they are trying but hopefully they will represent the great Malaysian cuisine better than what I had. We were there for lunch and the service was organised chaos at best with no hostess.

“Good Malaysian”
Reviewed 12 April 2013

There aren't many ( 2 that I know of) Malaysian restaurant in Houston and the food is pretty good here. I recommend the satay. Obviously it has the correct ingredients although not charcoal grilled, still taste like the authentic stuff. The fried Kway Teow is also good. I thought the curry noodles (Laksa) was ok, the soup was abit thin. I can't comment too much on the other dishes as I kept going back to the satay and fried Kway Teow. If you felt a sudden urge for Malaysian I would recommend this. The only think i wish they would do is not to use MSG in their cooking. You can ask them not to in some of the dishes but thats not possible in the pre-cooked, like the laksa soup or marinate in the satay. I like this restaurant and the staff are really friendly.
