“Great Conecpt, Great Technology, Poorly Executed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 November 2013

I live in Houston and have been to Topgolf around a dozen times since they opened. This review is not of a single visit but overall impressions.

First, the Topgolf concept is pretty simple but excellent, and I have heard several people describing it as “bowling with golf clubs”. Even people who don’t play golf enjoy playing Topgolf.

It is at its heart, a driving range. However the balls you hit are dispensed from a machine and each one has a chip inside that tells the computer who is hitting it. You are aiming to hit the balls into huge “targets” which are holes dug out of the ground in the range area. If you hit one of the holes, the computer knows which hole you got it in and gives you a score for that hit. The points go up as you hit targets further away and as you get it closer to the center of targets. Scores are kept by a touch screen computer in your bay.

In a typical game of Topgolf, each player hits 20 balls and the highest score wins. There are several different games to choose from, including a general free-style “hit anything to score points” game and more skilled games aimed at hitting specific targets to advance.

The game is paid by the hour, regardless of the number of people playing (as of this writing, $20 an hour off peak and $40 an hour on peak). This is nice for groups because you can split the hourly cost and it is not much per person. All players in the group share a booth that has seating and a table and a driving mat right in front (similar to a bowling alley setup).

I have been several times during a weekday lunch time, and also at weekdays evenings and weekends.

If you can get there weekday lunchtimes you will have no problem getting a booth. If however you get there evening or weekends, be prepared for a wait. It is not at all unusual to have to wait 1-2 hours for a booth. They don’t take reservations (unless you have a really big group or are willing to pay hundreds of dollars for a platinum membership), but they do put you on the waiting list once you arrive (you can’t call ahead). When you go on the waiting list they take your cell number and text you when your booth is ready, this allows you to leave the facility, go to a bar maybe for a drink or go get some dinner before you play.

Once you sit down at your booth they hall full service menus that offer snacks, meals and a full bar and they have servers that come to your booth to take orders.

Here is where the whole experience starts to go downhill.

First, the drinks are fine, a little expensive but pretty much what you’d expect to pay in place like this (think prices at a high end bowling alley or Dave and Busters). The food is heavily over-priced (a side of fires is several dollars), and not good at all. It honestly tastes about on a par with something you would order at a Chilis. Not bad food, but not good and certainly not worth the 2-2.5 times the Chilis’ price they charge.

The other big issue here is the service. Regardless of when I have been, dead weekday lunchtime or very busy weekend, the service has been uniformly terrible. It is not unusual to not see your server for 10-15 minutes after you arrive at your booth. It is also not unusual that you will place drink orders and they will take another 15 minutes or more to arrive. What is unusual is if you EVER see your server again until it is time to pay at the end. If you order a soda, don’t expect a refill without having to track down a random staff member. If you ask for something (say, ketchup or the cutlery they forgot to bring with your food – which has happened more than once), it is highly likely you will have to ask 2-3 people several times before you actually get anything.

The servers are generally okay (not hostile or anything), but are far from the friendliest folks out there.

In short, I would recommend TopGolf without hesitation for the gaming experience, but eat and drink before you go, so you can be happy with the one drink you are offered in your 1-2 hours there.

“What A Fun Place for Friends and Family any Golf Level”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 October 2013

This is such a fun place to visit no matter your golf level. We have gone with beginners to seasoned golfers and everyone has a blast. We try to go pretty close to opening which always helps with the crowds. They also have games to play while waiting for your turn. We go before noon for the special pricing, Just a fun place.

“Very nice idea for a meeting & fun”

Meeting accommodations adequate and catering was about normal.

The opportunity for a little fun after the meeting was most appropriate.

Great if you golf and even OK if you do not

Good concept.

“Everyone had a great time!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 October 2013

Our group attended the Top Golf in Houston, Texas and we really enjoyed it! This place was very well run. The food was good and the wait staff was attentive. Everyone in our group enjoyed trying to hit the balls into the targets. I would recommend a visit to Top Golf when you are in the Houston area.
