Three generations of our family ate here one evening in February. It was the closest thing to being in France without leaving Houston! All seven of us were excited about the food, the wine, and the service -- all outstanding.

Cafe Rabelais is somewhat of a sleeper, as it is located in a strip mall in Rice Village. Once one enters, however, he is enveloped in French charm. A full evening meal with appetizer, dinner, dessert and wine is pricey, but worth it. Sandwiches and salads are also available for $8-$10. We didn't try the sandwiches, but the salad and all the entrees were exceptional.

This restaurant tucked away in a little mall in Rice Village is one of the gems of Houston. It combines romantic charm, excellent food, exemplary service and good value in a way few Houston restaurants can match. We've never had a bad meal here; not even a mediocre one. One of the things we like is that everything on the menu, ranging from relatively simple sandwiches and salads to more elaborate French cuisine is prepared with great care. But, to be honest, the thing we like best is the bread. I have no idea what these people are doing that other Houston restaurants are not (maybe they just buy bread from a great vendor?), but this is the crusty, yeasty, yummy bread of dreams. The other aspect of the restaurant I like are the prices. Houston is a cheap restaurant town and this place is downright inexpensive (don't tell!) for the value it offers. Sandwiches and salads are quite reasonable and steaks and other pricier items are still well within reach. A great restaurant for a special occasion.

Oh, and one more thing. We're hardly wine experts; but the selection of wines at this place is also great. A year back we were served a Corsican Rose that was so good that I've tried (in vain) for years to hunt it down. The staff is very knowledgable in assisting selections.

A great place with an every changing fresh menu that is listed on a big blackboard. This is true french country cooking. The place is small and cozy so sometimes you have to wait for a table. A great wine list. Just describe to your waiter the kind of wine you are looking for and they will do a great job for you.

Quaint restaurant, great food. We were thirsty the entire meal because the staff would never visit the table, never filled our drinks and overall the service was non existent. We actually walked over to the kitchen area 2 times and filled our own iced tea. The meal took 1 hour and 10 minutes to be served. Really. If it weren't for the good food, we would rate it a 1 out of 5.

Unlike a lot of French restaurants, the atmosphere is casual. Waitstaff is very attentive. The food is fabulous. My husband loves the mussels. I love everything, esp. the fois gras and pommes frite. All price ranges of wine are available and your waiter is always willing to help you with choices. We recently took friends from Florida who are "foodies" and they loved the restaurant also.
