Set in beautiful grounds just west of Memorial Park, the Houstonian is meeting venue, spa&club and pool rolled in one. Ooh, and there is a hotel. Staff is very friendly and helpfull.Suites are adequate. Airco is a bit load. Very nice place indeed.

Enjoyed a quick one night stay before a business meeting at the hotel. Rooms were nicely furnished however mine was very dark - opened up to an inside courtyard - and a bit depressing. Bathrooms ARE small - unless the door is closed you really cant get around the toilet to the shower. Amazing health club and convenient walking path. Call ahead if you need a taxi - not a lot just waiting around like more urban locations.

Dear cmrhodes64,

Thank you for reviewing your stay at the Houstonian. I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the view from your room-- our wooded atmosphere is meant to feel like an oasis in the city. However, I'm very glad to know you enjoyed the club and walking path. Thank you and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Houstonian again.

We love staying at The Houstonian; the grounds and service are excellent. However, on a recent trip we encountered a couple of problems which need to be corrected. First, as we entered the hotel from the front drive, we were engulfed with cigarette smoke, not only in the entry but also in the lobby. The desk clerk told me that the smoking area is just outside the front door. Really? That is so horrid and really gave us an awful impression of the hotel. Secondly, the night of our arrival we had dinner at Olivette where we have eaten many times. I asked the waiter what the chardonnay by the glass was and he mentioned two, one of which was a Chateau Montelena...very unusual for a Montelena to be a "by the glass"wine. Well, it wasn't exactly a Montelena...it was the winery's second label which was OK but certainly not a Montelena...bait and switch. The management needs to take care of these problems.

Set back from the main road on a beautifully landscaped property, The Houstonian is a lovely and elegant hotel. I did not find the room dated (as other reviewers have said), but decorated in a traditional style. Certainly all the room appointments are on par with other fine hotels including a flat screen tv and mini bar. There are some interesting touches too: for example, instead of hanging a "do not disturb" sign on the door knob of your guest suite, this request -- and also that for housekeeping -- may be placed via an electronic panel just inside the room door, and will illuminate lights on the outside as an indication to the housekeeping staff. This was also the only hotel room I've ever stayed in that provided a flashlight.

My only real quibble was the size of the bathroom - you pretty much have to do-si-do when stepping out of the shower to avoid the toilet. Still the soaps, shampoos, etc. are of luxurious quality.

To my chagrin, I did not have a chance to visit the amazing gym and spa. Exercise classes (yoga, pilates, etc.) are included in the price of a room. There's also a rubberized running trail around the property.

The staff is friendly and polite without being obsequious.

All told, I would highly recommend The Houstonian.

Dear CoolAZMom,
Thank you for your kind and detailed review regarding you recent stay at the Houstonian. I’m so happy to hear you appreciate our traditional décor and found the suite to be well appointed. Indeed we can’t argue with you that the bathrooms aren't the biggest but I’m pleased to know you enjoyed the L’Occitane bath products. I’m also glad to know you found our staff to be warm and friendly. I sincerely hope you get a chance to return again soon so you may explore the Houstonian Club and all of its fine amenities as well. Thank you for staying with us.

It does feel a little like staying in an old world hunting establishment! However, rooms are nice (if a little dated) and the service excellent. Was somewhat difficult at times to quickly obtain a taxi as a little of the main path. Would probably stay in the Galleria region next time as probably a bit more convenient for me.

Dear OzTD,
Thank you for your review regarding your recent stay at the Houstonian. I’m glad to know you experienced excellent service from our staff. It’s unfortunate that getting a taxi wasn't always the easiest feat, but given our location in the Galleria, some hours of the day may be busier than others. We hope to welcome you back to the Houstonian in the future.

I stay in the Houstonian on regular basis for business.
In my opinion the amenities excel: huge gym with sauna and steamroom, multiple pools.
Treatment by the staff is very good and the rooms are comfortable although slightly dated.

Anyway, I feel quite comfortable in this hotel. A home away of home.

This hotel is in the Galleria/post oak area, but it's more like being in a rural retreat. The grounds are lovely, the rooms are very nice, the associated club/gym is incredible. The price is incredibly competitive for this area. Great hotel!
