“The best place to stay in Houston”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

I've been staying at the Houstonian for over six years and it's always something I look forward to when traveling to Houston. The quiet setting and charming area, friendly staff, comfy beds, great food, and excellent spa and workout facility make this a great place to stay. I've gotten to know the staff over the years and they are eager to help out. If going to Houston, I encourage you to stay here.

My family took a trip to the Houston area over Memorial Day weekend. Despite the constant rain, our stay at the Houstonian was wonderful. It's hard to believe this hotel is located so close to busy city attractions like The Galleria. The whole property is so quiet and serene, you feel like you're miles away from the city. The pool and club are great amenities, but unfortunately it was too rainy for the pool this time. This is our favorite Houston hotel and will stay here again and again!

We stayed at the Houstonian with our 2 kids (5 and 6 years old) on our way to a San Antonio hill country vacation. We arrived around noon, and our concierge level room was ready. 2 queen beds was nice since we had 2 kids with us. Bathroom was small. Hotel and rooms were nice but not luxury. The major downside to this Hotel is the extremely confusing layout. Long hallways. Elevators take forever. The fitness center, pools, tennis and spa are in three separate buildings not connected to the hotel and no covered walkways when it rains. There was very little help to our room or with luggage. No cart for luggage. No signs on how to get around. On the weekends, the hotel is filled with weddings and wedding guests making it feel very busy. The pros and reason we will go back are the 3 pools and fitness center. There is something for everyone. Basketball court for the six year old. Family pool with slide and zero entry. Pool side service for drinks and kid friendly pool. Outdoor dinner at the Arbor grill was easy and good. Lap pool for the adults. Huge fitness center and even a kid camp (we did not use but it looked fun). Overall a very nice hotel with excellent amenities. The kids loved the pool. Think I may recommend this hotel more to adults than family travel. The confusing and spread out layout was not the easiest with the kids. Last point, I am a huge fan of concierge lounges especially with kids but this was was just ok. The breakfast food was not geared to kids at all. Not one kid cereal was offered and it was so quiet that we felt awkward with our children. Overall, a nice stay and we will likely be back.

Room Tip: Few elevators and extremely long hallways so rooms can be quite a long walk with little kids. You...

Opportunity knocks only a few times, so we got a discount to go there. The hotel worries more about the pool clientele than the hotel folks. The staffing at the pool is great. The hotel bar borders on absurd not even caring. I sat for twenty minutes staring at the bartender talking to her friend waiting for a drink.

When I complained on the concierge lounge she offered me a cookie... Nice gesture, but not fixing the problem.

The hotel is getting old. We had to move rooms due to a leak. They were very gracious and gave us the same size room upstairs in the concierge floor, but then we got ROUWDY people who didn't care about noise at 2:00 AM. Nobody from staff cared.

Room Tip: Stay away from the pool areas as everybody passes that cooridor.

We thought we could take advantage of the amenities such as the three pools but not unless we wanted to deal with dozens of screaming kids in all the pools. No relaxing there but we were charged extra for the experience. The rooms were average with very small bathrooms. The beds were comfy but the sheets were scratchy. We wanted fresh sheets on second night thinking they wouldn't be so uncomfortable but it didn't happen. Next time in Houston will not be staying here

The Houstonian hotel and spa is a marvelous hotel nestled in the Galeria woods, if you can believe this lush establishment setting is just within a mile of the Galeria. You have everything you need within this beautiful complex. One of the best spas in Houston or even in the southwest. A gourmet restaurant that never, never fails in its delivery. And best of all, you have members of the Houstonian team there to make your visit memorable. I understand that the greatest majority of their staff have worked at the Houstonian for decades--and it shows.

We visited the Houstonian on Mother's Day this year. We went to the Olivette for dinner and even though the staff had worked feverishly all day long, the food and service was outstanding.

Room Tip: I love the rooms on the special floor where you will be able to get a light breakfast, drinks and ap...

We spent 2 nights at the Houstonian and attended a wedding reception on the second night. The Houstonian did an excellent job on the reception... food and service was very good and it was hot.
The bad and the ugly are the following, their bed coverings are pretty but not real functional. Discovered that we had to almost strip the bed to get the top sheet loose enough to even be able to get into the bed.
Then on the morning we checked out we called for a bellman and our car. I went downstairs to check out and my wife stayed in the room to wait for the bellman. My vehicle was already out when I got to the lobby but after a long wait for the luggage, the concierge asked me if he could help. I told him I was still waiting for my wife and luggage. To his credit, he went to the room to get the luggage. It was kind of a disappointing to what could have been a really good stay.
