We took a guided tour at Caddo and it was amazing. We were shown the large tree lined lanes in the lake and some historical sites from when the lake was traveled by paddle boats from the South and an old juke joint on stilts out in the lake that can only be reached by boat. We saw an alligator and lots of birds and other aquatic life. It is surreal with all the Lily pads hard to tell where there is water. We began at Certain Texas. Amazing thing to see!

I just returned from a weekend at Caddo Lake State Park with my son's Boy Scout troop. We were there primarily to canoe and really enjoyed canoeing among the beautiful cypress trees. The staff at the park was friendly and helpful. The bathrooms were the cleanest I have ever found in a camp ground! I especially liked how they had taped a list of the weekend's programs inside the bathroom stalls!

The park is nice, but it is along Big Cypress Bayou and not actually on the lake. So if you rent a canoe at the park, you are limited to a small pond at the park and the bayou. It is a long canoe trip to reach the more interesting areas of Caddo Lake. So if canoeing is your main interest, rent a canoe from an outfitter at Uncertain.

There are at least two canoe rental firms at Uncertain. I used Crips Camp. They were friendly and the rental price was low. However, from Crips Camp you need to paddle through the Goose Prairie section of the lake before you can reach the main lake area. If you are looking to minimize paddling, rent from an outfitter on the Big Cypress Bayou side of the peninsula such as Johnsons Ranch.

When canoeing you will want to avoid water with powerboats. That means you'll want to avoid Big Cypress Bayou. The paddle trails are well-marked. The "Geo Plot System" map from Atlantic Mapping is very good. With the map and the trail markers you will not get lost.

Nice trails to paddle are the MM Starr Ditch, the MM trail between Big Cypress Bayou and the M/MM junction, and the area around the M trail. I did not padded the NN trail which is the route into the main lake area from Johnsons ranch.

If you are capable of paddling long distance, there is an entire network of trails in the lake.

This is a great little state park. It is a quiet and beautiful setting with everything from fishing to bird watching to riding a riverboat. I like the bayou aspect of it which adds to its uniqueness. Park center was good and staff there was very friendly and helpful. Will definately return.

The sites were spacious and had plenty of room between sites, even though the park was mostly full it didn't feel cramped and we couldn't see the people on either side of our lot. We were in site 11 which had a screened in shelter with a picnic table inside and out, which was super nice for getting away from the mosquitoes. We were a couple of sites from the nearest bathroom, but a little far from the bathrooms with showers. It is very close to the fishing pier which was nice because everytime you went to the restroom you could look down at the pond and one morning I saw a great blue heron in my walk back from the restroom. The mosquitoes were not too terrible, but we all got a bad case of chiggers even though we had bug repellant on. It was the all natural repellant so not sure if it works on chiggers. The part of caddo lake in the park is a very small portion of the lake, but is filled with cypress trees. We took a boat tour with captain Ron's pontoon tours which took us into a different part of the lake that was filled with bigger cypress trees. You should definitely go on a boat tour if you want a better view of the bald cypress. Our tour guide was Byron, wasn't crazy about him or his snarky attitude. It was $20/person for an hour tour on a covered pontoon. We called the morning of the tour and went at noon although they do have several tours in a day. I think there are some cheaper options out there, but we just took the first guy that answered the phone. For good eats in Jefferson we ate at Kits Kornbread and Pies and the bayou cafe and bakery, the homemade bread and sinful brownies are to die for! The general store has ice cream!
