“Convenient hotel for exploring Suffolk and Essex”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

This hotel is perfectly adequate as a base for exploring Suffolk and Essex, it has a spacious bar and lounge areas and staff are friendly and helpful. There are conference facilities available but we were unable to get any of our laptops to talk to the hotels projector. There is adequate parking but be sure to study a map of the road layout before setting out as this is not teh easiest of places to find, you'll need to negotiate a number of roundabouts and slip roads at the A12 / A120 junction to get in. Being at a busy junction there is some background noise whilst outside enjoying the sunshine but it is generally quiet inside the hotel. The hotel car park has a number of potholes at the time of visiting so be careful.

We were guests at a birthday lunch at this hotel so I didn't want to make a fuss but the food was simply awful. I had a vegetable korma which was edible although it had clearly been standing around a while. I was a bit surprised to find a bit of plastic bag in there, never experienced that before. The rice was simply inedible, hard, dry & in lumps. We had cups of tea afterwards which tasted as though it had been made some time before.
I could go on & on but enough to say we will never return to this place unless a lot is done to improve it...replace the chef for a start

Room Tip: We were lunch guests so in idea of the quality of the rooms

We have just returned from a weekend stay at the Quality hotel, Colchester. We booked this using a “Buyagift” voucher and we got two nights (Fri & Sat) including breakfasts for just £49.50 which turned out to be fantastic value for money.

This hotel is a little bit off the “beaten track” to the North of Colchester but as I have passed it many times on my trips to the town I knew where to find it. Other guests told me they had a job finding it even using a Sat-Nav because it is on a kind of an “island” surrounded by roads (Google map it and you will see). If you miss the slip road off of the slip road from the roundabout to the A120 then you will have a long detour.

On arrival we were greeted by the friendly reception girls and were given room 216 on the first floor at the rear of the hotel. The room faced the rear garden and field behind so we weren’t overlooked. Our room was very clean and came with tea & coffee making facilities, a flat screen TV, trouser press and hair dryer. Our double bed was very comfortable. The only thing the room could have done with was a picture or two on the walls to break up the clinical look, but that’s only a minor issue. The bathroom although a little on the small side was functional enough. Soap and shower gel was supplied as was nice clean towels as you would expect. The shower over bath had good water pressure and the hot water was piping hot.

One thing that struck me when we arrived was how unkempt the outside was with pot holes in the car park some were that bad they had cones round them. The grass hadn’t been cut for ages and many of the bushes and shrubs were overgrown. So we did wonder what the inside of the hotel was going to be like.

The public areas of the hotel were clean but the carpet by the bar area was very worn with frayed edges. Some of the wooden furniture had seen better days and could do with replacing especially in the restaurant. The bar had a few beers to choose from. There was also a flat screen TV and although there a couple of satellite dishes on the roof there was no SKY television. The seating area of the bar was quite comfortable with leather sofa and chairs plus other armchairs. A quiz machine was available for your amusement. The bar didn’t close until 2am (sometimes later), Alex the night porter/receptionist and barman was a nice chap and I have to add the patience of a saint when one hotel guest came back from town the little worse for wear and couldn’t accept that the hotel rule was you couldn’t pay by cash after 11pm and drinks charges went on your room tab. After a bit of gentle persuasion from me and the barman he eventually accepted it. Daft thing was he left most of his beer and went to bed.

Breakfast in the morning was excellent. You had a choice of continental style buffet or full English. There was plenty to choose from to set you up for the day. We had the full English breakfast which consisted of the usual eggs, sausages, bacon etc all cooked fresh to order served hot by the friendly waitress.

This used to be a Ramada hotel before changing to a Quality hotel which was owned by the Akkeron group but a member of staff has told me it has changed hands again and is now owned by Jupiter hotels.

In summing up, considering that we only paid £49.50 for the two nights with our 2 for 1 voucher this was very good value for money. With a little TLC this hotel would get a top rating. One thing management really need to do is erect a sign on the slip road by the roundabout so people know where to find it.

We would certainly consider staying here again.

I booked this room because it suited us for location but had reservations after reading some of the reviews....however we had a lovely clean airy room which was spotless as was the bathroom. Crisp clean bed linen and plenty of fluffy bath towels. For £44 a night I feel it was a total bargain and would without a doubt stay again.

Stayed whilst visiting Colchester. Must admit the reason I first considered it was due to Price Vs others in Colchester.
at £40 per room per night it was by far the cheapest & at half price many if not all others.
On Arrival I found it to be a Smart professional establishment.
Very Pleasant. and with very warm & friendly staff at reception and Bar.
The Bar was adequate, with a range of Drinks alas due to lack of custom the Real beer selection was very limited & lacking. but I fully understand that it would be simply wasteful to stock an item that will go off before being sold.
The room (104) was more than expected. with a 27" LCD TV spacious Table/dresser. Plenty of hanging space. that was I am pleased to say open (no doors) & allowed free airing & access to Garments.
Bathroom was Very Clean & well equipped.
View from Window was direct to rear Garden/Grass area & not overlooked.

Bed was Huge (Super King) and Very Comfortable. with adequate linen.

would not hesitate to return when in area and fully recommend.

I did not take Breakfast or an evening meal so cant comment on food. but viewed restaurant area & it was also of fine adequate size layout & decor.

Every thing from Room to staff was fine. even the favorite item of shoe polishing machine in hall way was pleasant & appreciated.

Room Tip: all to same Vista & location as to traffic/location noise. I would ask for 104 again.

I have stayed here on and off for over 6mths and the hotel was very much as you qould expect from a cheap and cheerful place.

It did however enter administration back in February and since then it has improved in service and food quite drastically, some minor changes in staffing and internal processes as well have seen a change (positive) in the delivery of the hotel as well.

It still needs a refurb, but for what you pay in the area it is still difficult to beat if you just want somewhere simple, clean and friendly with decent parking to sleep for a night or 3.

Room Tip: Top floor, end of corridor, get the least passer's by and most 1-nighter guests tend to be autom...

This hotel is cheaper than a travelodge or similar and yet has its own bar and restaurant. I am judging it on this basis and not on the fact that it is a "hotel" from a higher price range. I recently spend two nights here, the staff were all very pleasant and accommodating. The food in the restaurant was lovely, what i would call decent pub style menu. Only down side is the menu stays the same so if you stayed longer may become a bit boring. The room itself was fresh smelling and generally clean, there was a tea stain on the carpet and an area of threadbare carpet but i go back to the cost. The bed was very clean and comfy (quite soft), the bathroom was very clean and you get complimentary tea/coffee making items and toiletries. I think people often compare this type of venue un fairly, it is what it is, a slightly tired roadside value hotel - no more no less. The food was above expectations though
