I stayed here for a night, with my Grandad as we were going to an open day at the University of Essex. We got a double room each. The rooms were very plain and had a faint smell of smoke but they had a clean bathroom and complementary tea and coffee (Twinings Breakfast tea at that!)

The receptionist was very friendly and helpful, she told us how to get into the town and printed me a postcode of the University I was visiting. The full English breakfasts we received the next day were petty, not worth £10 per breakfast, they also have a range of cereals, juices and hot drinks.

The hotel is hard to find without a SatNav, it's tucked in the back of a main road, which made me consider whether or not to book it, but from the hotel, the road can barely be heard.

Just back from a two night break in Suffolk (which was lovely). Good things about the hotel:

It seemed to be conveniently situated for getting on and off the major road network.

It seemed to be clean enough.

Staff were friendly and helpful.

Good wifi connection in the bedroom.

Not so good things:

The food was poor, quite unappetising.

Public areas were shabby, in particular the carpet in the bar area was dreadful, torn and stained.

Bedrooms were adequate but had no ventilation unless you wanted the window fully open. There was no bedside/reading light, you had to have the whole room lit up. The mattress was saggy.

Drinks were very expensive given the standard of the environment, £5 for a glass of poor quality wine. You might expect to pay that in a 'nice' place, but not in a shabby, tired hotel.

The situation of the hotel meant that there seemed to be nowhere to walk to so you were trapped there. However - a tip - we did find a nice friendly pub if you turn left out of the hotel entrance and walk a few hundred yards up the road. looked like you might be able to get a nice meal there.

Room Tip: I don't think there's much to choose. Eat elsewhere.

Hotel was tired and dark in places. The breakfast is expensive at £10 for a full English, it took sometime to be served and then when it did come the requests for hard eggs and well done bacon were not taken into consideration - the final straw was that all but the tomato was cold. I complained and we didn't pay for the breakfasts.

This hotel is perfectly adequate as a base for exploring Suffolk and Essex, it has a spacious bar and lounge areas and staff are friendly and helpful. There are conference facilities available but we were unable to get any of our laptops to talk to the hotels projector. There is adequate parking but be sure to study a map of the road layout before setting out as this is not teh easiest of places to find, you'll need to negotiate a number of roundabouts and slip roads at the A12 / A120 junction to get in. Being at a busy junction there is some background noise whilst outside enjoying the sunshine but it is generally quiet inside the hotel. The hotel car park has a number of potholes at the time of visiting so be careful.

We were guests at a birthday lunch at this hotel so I didn't want to make a fuss but the food was simply awful. I had a vegetable korma which was edible although it had clearly been standing around a while. I was a bit surprised to find a bit of plastic bag in there, never experienced that before. The rice was simply inedible, hard, dry & in lumps. We had cups of tea afterwards which tasted as though it had been made some time before.
I could go on & on but enough to say we will never return to this place unless a lot is done to improve it...replace the chef for a start

Room Tip: We were lunch guests so in idea of the quality of the rooms

We have just returned from a weekend stay at the Quality hotel, Colchester. We booked this using a “Buyagift” voucher and we got two nights (Fri & Sat) including breakfasts for just £49.50 which turned out to be fantastic value for money.

This hotel is a little bit off the “beaten track” to the North of Colchester but as I have passed it many times on my trips to the town I knew where to find it. Other guests told me they had a job finding it even using a Sat-Nav because it is on a kind of an “island” surrounded by roads (Google map it and you will see). If you miss the slip road off of the slip road from the roundabout to the A120 then you will have a long detour.

On arrival we were greeted by the friendly reception girls and were given room 216 on the first floor at the rear of the hotel. The room faced the rear garden and field behind so we weren’t overlooked. Our room was very clean and came with tea & coffee making facilities, a flat screen TV, trouser press and hair dryer. Our double bed was very comfortable. The only thing the room could have done with was a picture or two on the walls to break up the clinical look, but that’s only a minor issue. The bathroom although a little on the small side was functional enough. Soap and shower gel was supplied as was nice clean towels as you would expect. The shower over bath had good water pressure and the hot water was piping hot.

One thing that struck me when we arrived was how unkempt the outside was with pot holes in the car park some were that bad they had cones round them. The grass hadn’t been cut for ages and many of the bushes and shrubs were overgrown. So we did wonder what the inside of the hotel was going to be like.

The public areas of the hotel were clean but the carpet by the bar area was very worn with frayed edges. Some of the wooden furniture had seen better days and could do with replacing especially in the restaurant. The bar had a few beers to choose from. There was also a flat screen TV and although there a couple of satellite dishes on the roof there was no SKY television. The seating area of the bar was quite comfortable with leather sofa and chairs plus other armchairs. A quiz machine was available for your amusement. The bar didn’t close until 2am (sometimes later), Alex the night porter/receptionist and barman was a nice chap and I have to add the patience of a saint when one hotel guest came back from town the little worse for wear and couldn’t accept that the hotel rule was you couldn’t pay by cash after 11pm and drinks charges went on your room tab. After a bit of gentle persuasion from me and the barman he eventually accepted it. Daft thing was he left most of his beer and went to bed.

Breakfast in the morning was excellent. You had a choice of continental style buffet or full English. There was plenty to choose from to set you up for the day. We had the full English breakfast which consisted of the usual eggs, sausages, bacon etc all cooked fresh to order served hot by the friendly waitress.

This used to be a Ramada hotel before changing to a Quality hotel which was owned by the Akkeron group but a member of staff has told me it has changed hands again and is now owned by Jupiter hotels.

In summing up, considering that we only paid £49.50 for the two nights with our 2 for 1 voucher this was very good value for money. With a little TLC this hotel would get a top rating. One thing management really need to do is erect a sign on the slip road by the roundabout so people know where to find it.

We would certainly consider staying here again.

I booked this room because it suited us for location but had reservations after reading some of the reviews....however we had a lovely clean airy room which was spotless as was the bathroom. Crisp clean bed linen and plenty of fluffy bath towels. For £44 a night I feel it was a total bargain and would without a doubt stay again.
