Located just inside the front gate at Central Texas Speedway (Formerly Thunderhill Raceway) - a NASCAR-sanctioned short track in Kyle, Texas - Bailey's Burgers is a bit hard to find but well worth the effort. It's located directly behind the Roger Beasley Hyundai dealership at Exit 210 on IH-35 North. The access road in front of the dealership is two-way, so be careful.
Bailey's Burgers is not a restaurant, rather it's more like a burger stand with outside picnic tables on a concrete patio and patio covering. Plenty of shade and fresh air for sure. A bit warm in the summer, but the scrumptious burgers at this place overcome any minor sweating experienced. The place started life as the main concession stand for the race track and still serves that role on race nights. But the burgers are so good they decided to open up during the week even when the track is not being used. The hours are limited, however, so it's best to "like" Bailey's Burgers on FaceBook to see what the hours are for the day you are planning on eating there.
The menu is limited, but the choice is easy. Get a Bailey Burger. Loaded. And get the sweet potato fries for an unbeatable combination. I hear the onion rings are really good too, but I've never tried them - next trip I will for sure.
The burger is made with fresh ground beef procured daily from a local Kyle butcher and is seasoned and cooked to perfection. And the bun is sweet and soft and yummy - must be a cross between a yeast roll and a sourdough bun or maybe a trade secret. Whatever it is, it's wonderful.
You order at a walk up window and sit at one of the picnic tables or walk up the hill to the grandstands and imagine a bunch of rednecks swapping paint and beating and banging. As I understand it, Central Texas Speedway will be hosting eight NASCAR sanctioned events this season.
Please be aware that if you need air conditioning, fancy stuff or pampering of any sort, you will not be happy with Bailey's Burgers. You are there for the Burger, not to be entertained.
Anyway, the three or four Bailey Burgers I have enjoyed so far are right up there with the very best gourmet burgers - probably even better.
I'll be back for sure.
