Owner description: Inspired by his Grand Tour, John Bourchier created Beningbrough; an Italian Palace nestled between York, Harrogate and Leeds. The impressive rooms are a perfect backdrop for the rich collection of portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery, Beningbrough's long term partner. The paintings feature people who have made, and are making, British history and culture and in 2015 (Mar-Oct)include contemporary portraits in a display of Royals: then and now. A working walled garden, grand herbaceous borders, sweeping lawns and a play area for children to let off steam, creates a year round garden. Picture postcard views can be seen from the garden and the parkland offers opportunities to explore riverside walks, ancient trees and hidden wildlife. The hands-on interactive galleries at this award winning property; Making Faces - 18th-Century Style, are perfect for discovering history and portraiture. Sitting for your own virtual digital portrait is a great way to send a lasting memory home or Clarence the Corgi can be your guide on the free family royal trail. A taste of servant life is found in the Victorian laundry and the friendly team bring the stories to life in the house. The walled garden restaurant serves morning coffee, afternoon tea and hot lunches include freshly picked produce. The shop has an extensive home and garden range and second hand books can be found in the library in the hall.

“Fantastic day”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

Had a fantastic day at Beningbrough - have to say that the weather was great which certainly helped. We'd taken our lunch so we sat in the beautiful walled garden to eat it and then had a wander around the rest of the lovely gardens. Afterwards we visited the house which is very impressive. As usual (at NT properties) the wonderful volunteers were on hand to bring the place to life. At the moment there is an exhibition of royal portraits in the house. Although it is not huge it is well worth seeing. After the house visit we then did a walk. The map we were given advised us that there were different walks taking from 25 minutes up to 2 hours. We chose a 50 minute walk which was very easy. Afterwards we stopped at the small cafe beside Home Farm and sat outside enjoying our tea and tea cake. Just a wonderful day.

“As good as National Trust get”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

Enjoyed our visit to this propert very much. Gardeners must be some of the best NT has. Obvious pride in the property by all concerned.

Catering facility ahead of other NT properties in quality but as usual top of the range as far as prices are concerned. Liked audio guide easy to operate and opportunity to ask room steward. As a NT member this is one of the top properties we have visited.

“Good day out with the family”
Reviewed 21 April 2014 via mobile

Visiting family in York for Easter and spent the Monday at the Hall & Gardens. Provided a good, entertaining day out for a family ageing from 8 to 59.
Gardens were splendid whilst the house provided much interesting information and knowledge. Easter activities provided by the National Trust, including an egg hunt, were fantastic. Would definitely return for another visit, particularly on holidays and occasions.

“another good day out”
Reviewed 18 April 2014

Had a really lovely time, we took part in the Easter Egg hunt which was better than in past years, children had to find crowns, fill in the missing words and answer questions rather than just find letters to make a word which could sometimes be figured out before all the letters were found. the gardens are good fun for the children to run around and the hall is interesting too. The children also enjoyed the adventure playground, can't comment on the café as we did not go in but by the length of the queue I imagine it was rather good, would go back again but then as we have NT membership this probably has something to do with it
