Baía das Pedras is a wonderfully beautiful and cozy place, where you can enjoy great food, very welcoming hosts and the best of Pantanal’s wildlife. I highly recommend this Fazenda if you are planning a trip to Pantanal.

We can't say enough good about staying at the Fazenda Baia des Pedras. The owner Rita has lived in the Patanal her entire life and her knowledge of the land and the wildlife was impressive. The highlights included: a breeding pair of tapirs, 3 species of macaws, ocelot, very, very young lion cubs, 100+ species of birds, and much more. Also, if you want to experience what this region has to offer for food this is the place to go - each meal was spectacular and diverse. Rita and Carlos' home is lovely and inviting. Our room was perfect - nice privacy, clean, cool with ac, and beds were comfortable. We had a translator/ecoguide with us which was extremely helpful.

We felt very welcome in this beautifully located range in the middle of the Pantanal. We came here especially for seeing wildlife. And if this is what you want, this is the place to go. Caymans, capybaras, macaws, etc are easily spotted. We spotted even bigger animals like ant eaters and tapir.

There was no fixed day program, but we were free to choose what we wanted to do. Game drive, horseback riding, hiking etc. This is how you are treated on this ranch. You are a true guest of the family and everything is done to make your stay as special as possible. We chose to go out a couple of times a day. But if you want to relax, the beautiful fruit garden is nice place to spot colourful birds.

This august a friend and I were planning to visit the Pantanal, and chanced upon Baia das Pedras on the web. We picked it, not knowing what to expect as this was our first trip to Brazil. We couldn't have made a better choice - we spent 3 days there and had fun every day. The birdlife is spectacular. The staff went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The home style food was gourmet. Every meal had a variety of vegetables and meat, and superb dessert, all made in house. The wildlife viewing and the guide Luis was above expectation. Luis spoke perfect english, was extremely passionate about the area and knowledgeable about every species of bird and animal we found. One morning we went for a horseback ride - very gentle horses. Rita (the owner) was extremely flexible in the activities, ensuring we got to really do all we wanted. Also there were only a few guests at a time, thus making it a very intimate atmosphere. We enjoyed meeting the other guests.

I will definitely be going there again with my family - my kids are going to fall in love with this just as I did.

The only suggestion I have to make it even better - a nitpick really - is if it were possible to go out even earlier for a wildlife ride or walk in the morning. It would be great to go from 6 - 7 for a walk, breakfast, then a full activity, then lunch; in reality we went by 7:30, not a big difference, but would make the day that much more full.

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Brazil's Pantanal Region. We booked our trip through Brazil Nature Tours. We stayed at Fazenda Baia Das Pedras for 5 nights and would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a true Pantanal experience on a working cattle ranch. We are avid horseback riders and went here for the riding as well as the nature. We were looking forward to riding alongside the cowboys when they went about their daily work. It was a great experience to help them herd the cattle and look after the calves. The Pantaneiro horses, which are bred and raised on the ranch, were wonderful to ride. We went riding everyday in the morning with the cowboys. In the afternoon we took jeep safaris or hikes to see the wildlife. There are an abundance of birds in this area as well as black howlers, feral pigs, pecories, capybaras, tapirs, anteaters, and of course the elusive puma and jaguar, neither of which did we see!!!

We arrived at the ranch via jeep transport from another eco-lodge. A small private plane ride from Campo Grande which took 55 minutes had taken us to the other lodge before coming to Baia das Pedras. We returned from Baia das Pedras via the small plane which arrived on the grass landing strip in front of Rita's house!!! It is easier than making the long (about 6 hour) ride on mostly dirt roasd to Campo GRande. We had a private English speaking guide with us since Rita & Carlos, the owners, speak limited English.

Rita welcomes you to her home and makes you feel like you are part of the family. She was very accommodating of our sabbath and kosher dietary restrictions. I had free access to the kitchen and having brought a pot with me, was able to cook alongside Kelley, the cook, and make authentic food like she was preparing for everyone else. Although, Kelly did not speak or understand any English and I did not speak or understand any Portuguese, we were still able to communicate with the help of our guide.

Rita accompanied us on our daily activities which included fishing for piranhas for dinner!!! She is very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna as well. I would highly recommend this ranch if you are planning on a trip to the Pantanal.

Just returned from a trip to Brazil's Pantanal. The lodge is really more like a B&B, where you are a guest in Rita and Carlos' home. Rita and Carlos are wonderful warm people, and they went out of their way to make us feel at home in their lovely house. Rita's Fazenda (ranch) has a wonderful green patch of the Vazente (closest translation is wetlands?) even in the midst of a very bad drought... so you have a fantastic collection of birds and wildlife meandering about. Rita takes you on safari trips and on horseback (even for us first timers). Authentic Pantaneiro food which is fresh, delicious and very appetizing. Wake up to toucans and macaws, and a wonderful variety of avian life. A nature lover's paradise.

Our stay here exceeded our expectations and we would be happy to return. The accommodations are more than comfortable, including air-conditioning. Discussions during meals with Rita and Carlos, the proprietors, were interesting, and the food was appetizing. Rita and Carlos were very welcoming, and Rita was an excellent guide to the abundant wildlife, taking us on outings by truck and horseback. Even this apprehensive 1st-time horse-rider enjoyed the rides. We saw an amazing number of birds in a variety of settings. The incredible hyacinth and red-and-green macaws were roosting in trees a short walk from the house, and the tree in the front yard was frequently full of brilliant parrots. Rita’s English was limited, so we were happy to have an English-speaking guide for the birding expeditions, but Rita knows where to find everything and has extensive knowledge about the fauna.

The fazenda is also a working cattle ranch, which was interesting. They are happy to tailor the program to your particular interests. There is even an internet connection if you want to be reminded of the outside world. We were there for 3 nights, and would not advise a shorter stay.

The about-1-hour flight in from Camp Grande was arranged by a Open Door Tours who helped us find the fazenda and a personal guide. The flight gave us a fascinating view of the Pantanal area.
Enthusiastically recommended.
