Baia das Pedras is a cattle ranch, owned and operated by one of the original families settling the Pantanal. The ranch is huge, over 15,000 hectare, for cattle and horses, located 60 KM from Campo Grande. It takes about 4 hours of dirt road riding to get there.
The cattle co-habit the range land and marches with deer, cayman, catybaras, foxes, tapirs and many other animals, and thousands of parrots, macaws egrets and ibises, and the ostrich-like rhea.
The number of guest rooms is small (5) and meals are with the family and their college-age children. Very friently and with good discussion. Food is fresh and excellent, but local and family oriented. Rooms are clean and very well maintained. There is a single internet line to the house and very slow. The ranch is available for ecological research and while were were there, a group staying were studying the habits of the giant armadillo, an almost extinct species (we only saw photos) funded by the Edinburgh Zoo and other groups. The whole ranch is a private ecological preserve.
If you want to get away from the regular world and learn and experience a bit how life was like in remote but beautiful lands, this is an excellent place and experience. We did not bring any but it would work well with children. We took the plane out, which I would recommend.

Baía das Pedras is a wonderfully beautiful and cozy place, where you can enjoy great food, very welcoming hosts and the best of Pantanal’s wildlife. I highly recommend this Fazenda if you are planning a trip to Pantanal.

We can't say enough good about staying at the Fazenda Baia des Pedras. The owner Rita has lived in the Patanal her entire life and her knowledge of the land and the wildlife was impressive. The highlights included: a breeding pair of tapirs, 3 species of macaws, ocelot, very, very young lion cubs, 100+ species of birds, and much more. Also, if you want to experience what this region has to offer for food this is the place to go - each meal was spectacular and diverse. Rita and Carlos' home is lovely and inviting. Our room was perfect - nice privacy, clean, cool with ac, and beds were comfortable. We had a translator/ecoguide with us which was extremely helpful.

We felt very welcome in this beautifully located range in the middle of the Pantanal. We came here especially for seeing wildlife. And if this is what you want, this is the place to go. Caymans, capybaras, macaws, etc are easily spotted. We spotted even bigger animals like ant eaters and tapir.

There was no fixed day program, but we were free to choose what we wanted to do. Game drive, horseback riding, hiking etc. This is how you are treated on this ranch. You are a true guest of the family and everything is done to make your stay as special as possible. We chose to go out a couple of times a day. But if you want to relax, the beautiful fruit garden is nice place to spot colourful birds.

This august a friend and I were planning to visit the Pantanal, and chanced upon Baia das Pedras on the web. We picked it, not knowing what to expect as this was our first trip to Brazil. We couldn't have made a better choice - we spent 3 days there and had fun every day. The birdlife is spectacular. The staff went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The home style food was gourmet. Every meal had a variety of vegetables and meat, and superb dessert, all made in house. The wildlife viewing and the guide Luis was above expectation. Luis spoke perfect english, was extremely passionate about the area and knowledgeable about every species of bird and animal we found. One morning we went for a horseback ride - very gentle horses. Rita (the owner) was extremely flexible in the activities, ensuring we got to really do all we wanted. Also there were only a few guests at a time, thus making it a very intimate atmosphere. We enjoyed meeting the other guests.

I will definitely be going there again with my family - my kids are going to fall in love with this just as I did.

The only suggestion I have to make it even better - a nitpick really - is if it were possible to go out even earlier for a wildlife ride or walk in the morning. It would be great to go from 6 - 7 for a walk, breakfast, then a full activity, then lunch; in reality we went by 7:30, not a big difference, but would make the day that much more full.
