“An oasis of civilisation in the desert”
Reviewed 23 June 2008

Marfa is a remarkable city, and the Paisano is a remarkable hotel in this cute desert town. The Paisano hotel is truly an oasis of civilisation in the middle of the desert. I arrived here after I had spent a couple of nights in Big Bend NP and in Terlingua. As beautiful as the location of the Chisos Mountain Lodge in Big Bend NP may be, the rooms there are very old and basic.

At exactly the same price, the Paisano offers much better value for money. The hotel still breathes the atmosphere from its historic high days in the 1930's. The rooms are small, but very clean and lovely refurbished, a successful combination of furniture that matches the feel of the hotel combined with modern equipment such as a flatscreen TV and good airconditioning.

The owner at the front desk was a bit reserved, but friendly. While many of the people I had met in the past days didn't even know my country, he even knew about the complex political situation in my country.

I loved Marfa very much and if I go back, I would certainly stay in the Paisano again.

The hotel is built in the original spanish style. Everything is of good and mostly high quality, you feel at home there, despite the size of the large house and the number of tourists there.
Nice: the man at the front desk who was helpful and mostly friendly but a little overworked.
Interior is VERY tasteful and nice to look at.
Freezing: the pool was like ice-water and even for us Germans too cold. The heating must have been off.

I stayed at Hotel Paisano over the Christmas holiday traveled with my dog. We stayed in the James Dean room at the top of the stairs (see photo).

Overall, I would stay at this hotel again. The staff was very helpful and friendly, the room was comfortable, though I found the TV to be a little small for the distance it was from the bed, or anywhere else one would sit to watch the tube. I generally watch tv for about ten minutes every morning while traveling, but in this case, I thought it would be fun to watch a movie on Christmas day. However, the flat screen was so tiny it was a little distracting.

The restaurant, Jetts, was solid, and brought in a good mix of both locals and visitors. Great service, particularly from the bartender, Carlos.

The location is perfect, right smack in the middle of the major downtown street (Marfa is teeny), and within walking distance to several galleries. I would stay at the Paisano again without question while traveling to Marfa.

As noted by a previous reviewer, the Paisano has a lovely courtyard. The lobby was pleasant as was a room off the lobby with a fireplace. There was ice cold lemonade when we arrived and coffee in the morning. The staff was helpful and friendly. We had a room with two queen beds and two small bathrooms -- I would guess two small rooms that were converted to one. It had comfy overstuffed chairs. Our friends had a room with a queen bed and a very pleasant patio. The hotel needs some work (like paint and washing the windows) but these were minor things that did not detract from it's charm. The only real flaw is that the desk closes at 10 p.m. with no way that we could see to contact hotel staff in case of an emergency.

We were visiting on Sunday and Monday nights. Marfa is small; apparently there are more dining options on the weekend. We thought Jett's Grill was fine. Pizza Foundation was friendly with good pizza.

We used this hotel stay as a stop-over while rock collecting in the area. Rooms were nice, clean, staff was very helpful.

The El Paisano is a charming small hotel in the middle of downtown Marfa, Texas. Keep in mind that Marfa has 2,000 or so residents! The hotel has a lovely courtyard with a fountain and tables outside to enjoy the nice weather. The desk was well manned with very helpful people. There is no elevator but there is help if needed with bags. Our room was very charming and quiet. It was very nicely appointed. The bathroom, however, was very small and not much room for toiletries. The lighting could have been a bit better--just more powerful light bulbs. There is wifi in the lobby which was nice. In the morning, there is coffee (but no decaf) in the lobby, and the fruit bowl is filled most of the time. We did not eat at the restaurant but it has received good reviews. A delightful place to rest your head.

Pros:
Local, not a generic chain
Great price for a historic hotel ($99 night + $10 pet fee)
Takes dogs (no problem with our two big labs)
Newer mattresses, very comfortable
Great antique furnishings in the rooms
Beautiful lobby, loved the hotel shops, room dedicated to James Dean and era music
Fantastic looking bar and restaurant off the courtyard
Wine glasses and corkscrews in the room
Great water pressure and newer larger showerhead
Very non-smoking, $250 fine if smoking is suspected

Cons:
Stiff but 100% cotton sheets
TV was in front of the only mirror in the room other than in the bathroom (awkward getting ready if someone is watching tv)
No fan in the bathroom
No chain or bar locks on the door (only the key lock)
No breakfast onsite

Suggestions:
Ask for a courtyard or street view, we did a 'night of' reservation and they were very booked so we didn't mind, but our window overlooked the dumpster.

Restaurants Offsite;
(Breakfast only, we ate dinner at the Star Party at the Observatory)
Brown Recluse - Good menu, but was only serving coffee the day we were there.
Austin Street Cafe - A little pricey and euro-fare, but very kind and friendly staff

Overview:
We stayed in Marfa because all the places in Ft. Davis were booked and we were in the area to attend the Star Party at McDonald Observatory-highly recommended! After a BAD experience at The Gage in Marathon, TX we were leery of another historic hotel, but The Paisano turned out to be a fantastic experience.

The Paisano is a beautiful hotel . The courtyard is fantastic, reserve some time to enjoy coffee or a book near the fountain. There is a bookstore onsite in case you didn’t bring one. The other guest varied from dreadlocks, to senior citizens to ranchers, a very eclectic crowd.

I had never been to Marfa and was surprised by how “arty” the town was for West Texas, I really wish I had more time to spend in town to visit the galleries and shops. I will definitely go back and stay at the Paisano!
