My husband and I chose the hotel for the great style and we heard it is THE place to stay in Marfa. So we did. While we like the minimalist style and that it is dog friendly, we found the service to be mediocre. I thought the rate was too high for what they actually offer. Also, if you're looking for a room with a view (which you might as well when you go to West Texas!) don't stay at the Thunderbird. There are four rooms with proper windows and the rest open to a trellis of vines. The small window offers minimal natural light and absolutely no view.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms on the second level so you'll have a nice, open window.

I found this hotel online so was quite shocked when we finally pulled in. Kudos to the photographer for making an old 50s motel look like a funky, upscale, trendy stop worthy of the $175 a night fee (holiday rate). One quick glance at the platform bed, sparse furnishings, concrete floor and institutional bathroom and we quickly returned to the desk clerk and asked for a refund. I would have been fine with the accommodations if the cost had been closer to $80, but for more than twice the money I expected a few more creature comforts. We ended up staying in Alpine at the Maverick Inn (for $90 a night) and were very happy there.

With this hotel, I guess most times you'll get out of it what you expect. It is a bit expensive for what is a standard "motor inn" size place, but the aesthetic, design, and individuality of the hotel totally suits the art tourist vibe of Marfa.

The room was minimalist rather than spartan, and considering we were there for a lot of the Judd stuff it was quite apt. The gift basket (wish there was a mini bar, but so many places in the States don't seem to have them?) was great and pretty reasonably priced. The bed was super comfortable. A bigger TV may have been nice, but whatever, this one suited the layout. Bathroom layout great.

There were other places to eat/drink in town, which suited us fine.

This was perhaps the WORST hotel we have ever stayed at! And not inexpensive!! I don't know how anyone could give this place a good review. To start, the room is tiny, cold and uninviting. The one chair in the room is uncomfortable and useless. No desk, just narrow table with a lamp that is purposeless. Old tube tv hangs in corner. Bed is uncomfortable (platform), and very low for anyone over the age of 40. Bathroom ok, but also cold and uninviting. Front desk staff cannot answer questions about the city, and gives no info about hotel. Found breakfast quite by accident. (only on weekends). Steer clear of this place, and opt for Hotel Paisano- which was unfortunately full. Looked beautiful and staff very nice and helpful.

If you make your way to Marfa and want the minimal chic experience a la South Beach, then the Thunderbird is for you. Concrete floors, a very comfortable bed, basic but adequate bath. This is not about a room to linger in, but it is comfortable. Fair warning, the train tracks run just behind the hotel, so if you are light sleeper, bring ear plugs (actually a set was left in the room presumably because others have commented on this). Courtesy breakfast of rolls, cereal, juice and coffee...not haute cuisine, but enough to get started.

This hotel knocked me out. While it perfectly fits my aesthetics, I can see why others don't enjoy it. I loved everything about it-- the concrete floors, the bed is perfect, the rug-- the bathroom, which isn't separated, is different and cool for a quick stay. It's not like I'm living there forever, so I enjoy being in a place that isn't run-of-the-mill. I absolutely fell in love with this place and would return in a heartbeat. We also enjoyed the breakfast, the toiletries (fancy!) and the stationary. Love.

Looks pretty but on closer inspection the walls are thin....you can hear everything through the walls, there are 2 pairs of earplugs in all rooms. This could also be due to the fact a loud train goes through a couple of times in the night. No-one on hand to really look after things like dry the wet seat covers at the pool. It was saturated and there was nowhere else to sit. Rooms and pool overlooking the road. The design aspect however is brilliant. Really well done marketing and website! Good bits to buy from the 2 shelves in office which are the shop. Pricey however!
