“Good place to stay for the basics”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 February 2012

I stayed her for about a week in June of 2011 while on business and it served its purpose. This is not a luxury hotel but the staff was very helpful and considerate. The breakfast served its purpose and the dinner there during the week was decent. There is a Crackle Barrel in the same parking lot if you need something to eat and a shopping mall just on the other side of the highway. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who needed a place to stay in the McAllen area.

The Hotel was attractive, clean and well located. Service at the desk was efficient, and we benefited from the Poncho Restaurant across the parking lot, which had a fabulous Mexican buffet breakfast.
The bed was very comfortable, sporting an adjustable air mattress. All the other amenities were
up to snuff and all at a reasonable price.

This was my first time in this hotel but definitely not the last one.
I booked online and got a great discount.
We got a very nice standard room with a king size bed a big desk with a ergonomic chair that was very useful, because I had some work to do.
There is Free Internet and we got the rate with free breakfast.
The bed has the option of adjusting the softness or firmness and I think that is very good because not every traveler has the same needs.
The bathroom was very big and with nice amenities.
The breakfast was better than I expected, I ask the cook for some omelets and I took them to the room.
You could choose from waffles, pancakes, cereal, eggs, bacon, sausage, coffee, juice, milk, bakery and toast.
It was really close from the mall and downtown.
The staff was very friendly and they try to make you feel at home. They offered us some bottled water when we got to check in.!

Room Tip: You can book online or ask at the front desk for an upgrade

Smile at the front desk, quick service, free business center with in-room free printing, free wi-fi (very fast and strong signal), front desk found me an apple when I asked for some fruit around 3pm, fresh breakfast items including TexMex local fare, fitness room in great condition (I've seen terrible ones on the road), pool/hottub area very nice (wish I had brought a suit), no musty or bad hotel smells (there have been some bad ones in the past), every staff member I had contact with was friendly and helpful.

Honestly this is a conveniently located hotel (as other options) , seemed clean and well kept, for sure not bad location and good facilities... We got a nice 2-bedwoom suite on third floor, unfortunate the rudeness and unfriendliness of the front desk staff though... As we entered the hotel, basically , we were ignored by the "busy lady" in the front desk. She didnt even said hello back to us, or "wait a moment please " we were not given instructions, just standing there waiting for a long while, being ignored . its is such a bad feeling specially when your paying for a service. I offered her my ID but she refused to look at it, just asked for my name in an unfriendly way, then she that gave us our keys as a cold, unhappy human robot, we didnt learn about facilities, about breakfast hours, nothing, just waled up to our rooms ... We stayed for 5 days in the mcallen/ rio grande area for shopping and leisure, and after this 1rst day in the hilton hotel we just moved out and got us another much friendlier hotel, we were very glad we did.. Same employee atittude on our way out (maybe less rude but still not expected from a hilton hotel ! ) .... I think the hotel has good facilities and probably is a good option for people on a business trip , but not for families nor people on shopping or leisure trips that expect (like us) more of a human and respectful treatment... as for me, left me with a bad bad impression of hilton management and the way employees are not comitted to care for us customers, I definetely wont stay in this hotel again nor recommend it, shame on them.

As a regular traveler to the area, a good value. A more than cordial staff at breakfast and not bad for the front desk as well. The amenities offered (gym, business center, etc) were somewhat limited. You could walk across the gym in three steps. As far as the business center, good for just the basics. No maintenance issues for an entire week, so kudos to their maintenance guys.

I've tried several hotels in this area and price-range, and the Hilton Garden Inn is a good value. It is near the highway, the airport, the mall, and several restaurants. The hotel has an airport shuttle and ample parking. Breakfast is decent, but the "bar" is only good for one drink while waiting to go to dinner. There is also a little "shop" behind the front desk where you can get a snack. The rooms are pretty standard for this type of business hotel. One feature I like is that the matresses have adjustable internal air chambers, which is good feature for me since I like a softer bed, which is sometimes hard to find in a hotel.

While the surrounding area is a retail/hotel/medical area, any travelers unfamiliar with the McAllen area should consult with hotel staff or trusted local associates before venturing into new areas.
