I really thought this hotel was easy to find and the staff was really great.
The beds were comfortable, the rooms were cool, the breakfast was quick and easy.
We walked around a lot and felt really safe. We were able to find a lot of really cute shops, great places to eat along the lake, and generally nice people!
I wouldn't recommend staying outside of the island area, it looked a bit rough and while I'm all for an adventure, I've been told by numerous travelers to stick to the touristy areas right now. Guatemala is really hit or miss on what areas are safe and which ones are not, and I know several people will argue this and say that it's a misconception- but right before we left Belize a German man was telling us about a place he went "off the beaten path" where he saw a man shot and left to die.
I haven't had ANY bad experiences in Guatemala and this is my second time going back, but with the migration in from Nicaragua and other conflicts in the area (July/August 2018), I would try to stay to the main areas.
Once the chaos around Guatemala slows down, I'm sure things will get better.
