Reviewed 17 October 2013

Our families (2) stayed 10 days at the Ilia Mare Hotel during the peak season - August 2013. Our rooms, a double occupancy and a suite were well-furnished and comfortable. The housekeeping team does an excellent job and deserves special recognition. The walk to the seaside tavern takes less than 5 minutes and truly worth it. Very, very friendly and accommodating staff, both at the hotel and tavern. Having been a business traveler for many, many years, I found it refreshing that the hotel manager proudly displays the hotel's ISO certification, and, repeatedly queried me on how services could be improved. The owner openly and sincerely expressed his appreciation for our business. This is truly a family establishment, so be prepared to share the facilities with a bunch of children.

Room Tip: All the rooms are furnished with super beds - very comfortable! I think all the rooms have sea views...

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: I came accidentally across the little village of Ilia last year on our way home from a visit to Edipsos. I wanted to check what the area offers but although I was amazed with the beauty and serenity of the place, the calm waters and the long beach, yet the narrow entrance road leading to the village seemed very neglected. It was disappointing and I remember I tried hard to take a few photos with no litter on sight.
On this year’s trip to the north of Evia a few days back I thought to go for it so I booked for only one night out of curiosity and I was not disappointed.

A HUGE DIFFERENCE: It is much cleaner this year, the narrow entrance road leading to the village is unbelievably well-groomed. You see, there is a streamlet on the side of the road grown with planes and bracken and the ladies of the village’s society finally have undertaken initiative to keep the area clean and beautify the place.
It was not difficult at all to take pictures this time as there was not a single paper on sight and the singing of birds and beauty of nature reminded us that it is spring and we are in the countryside. The bigger stones on the two sides of the stream are now painted white with lime-water (asvestis) so clean and bright white that looks like snow. What a huge difference!

FAMILY BUSINESS: Well we booked at the Ilia Mare Hotel only because of its positive comments and we were not disappointed at all.
Honestly I had a totally different picture in mind.
I expected it ok but it was more than good. It honestly exceeded our expectations. It is the Gem of the village in every way and thanks to this hotel the village has several visitors.

ARRIVAL: Just a week before Easter the hotel was expecting its first guests so we found Nico the owner busily working in the garden. We had a warm welcome and instantly we were shown to our room. The hotel is fully booked for Easter and the owners are out working to get everything ready for the new season.

We parked the car in the huge garage of the basement, and through the lift we got to our room. Mrs. Sevasti was waiting for us outside the room with the key.
Even the lift of the hotel is new and stylish. You don’t expect it to be that good and I was impressed. (There is access for the disabled as well).

ROOM: The interior is relaxing with soft colours, the room is spacious, functional and unbelievably clean. It gives the impression that nobody else has stayed here before. It bears facilities many times not even found in 4* hotels.
There were slippers of good quality and thick bright white robes. I came across 4* Spa hotels trough my travelling where we could get a robe only if we visited the SPA for a treatment.

There was a safe and a hair drier, a flat TV set, a small refrigerator. Inside there was a bottle of water as a welcoming treat –a nice gesture!
The bed was huge and comfortable, bright linen, the dressing table had plenty of drawers. In all there is plenty of space to keep things.
We left the balcony door open the whole evening and just drew the curtains to hear the sound of waves splashing on the shore.

BATHROOM: Not that big but normal with a shower cabin and a small window that allows light coming in. Towels bright and fresh, plenty of toiletries -bath gel, soap, shampoo and body lotion, however the hotel does not provide plastic caps so have this in mind and take your own. Lately I noticed that there is lack of caps even in 4* hotels but I always carry my own to be sure. No coffee/tea facilities either.

THE VIEW: Stunning and unbeatable …of course if those electricity cables and lamp posts which are in front of the hotel in the street were missing it would have been magic, but still the view is breathtaking.
The huge long balconies and the view are by far the highlight of the rooms. No matter what time of day or night you are out here you will love it. You are right out in nature and at this season waters are calm as a lake’s.

THE BAY: On my first stroll to the village I noticed some real big pebbles spread in certain parts of the road and in some places were piled up. The water is much below the road but I was curious why so many of them are out on land. A member of the family told me then that the scene changes depending on the weather. These calm waters in the bay get rough and the tide is so strong sometimes that drags anything ashore and up to the road. It is something you cannot comprehend seeing the calm waters but it does happen and this is the reason why the hotel provides shelter for the cars of its guests.

BREAKFAST: Usually the hotel provides a rich buffet but since we are only 2 couples here today we are lucky to have an extra special homemade breakfast brought to us in a tray.
Mrs. Sevasti is the other family member whose body and soul is dedicated on this business. You will see her everywhere, and the day we arrived after giving us the key and showing us around she left for her kitchen. She was busy baking her own spinach pie the one we were served for breakfast among many other delicacies.
We were each served a huge cup of coffee and we enjoyed it out at the terrace which on two sides it is surrounded by orange trees. A tray followed the coffee with homemade jam and slices of a homemade cake and rusk, butter and local honey.
Then we had Despina bringing us the second tray and we could not believe it… A big platter with two pieces of toast filled with ham and cheese, an omelette, olives and two pieces of homemade spinach pie!
With all these I asked for a second cup of coffee.
Breakfast was a feast indeed and everything was of exceptional quality and taste.

RESTAURANT: The hotel has its own restaurant and guests can have lunch and dinner out there. It is just 150 metres from the hotel on an upper terrace overlooking the beautiful bay but I cannot comment on this since it was closed and it was supposed to open in 2 days. I did not even go there but I could see the terrace from a distance. It must be a popular spot and I trust that it is the best in the whole village. I was able to imagine the range of vision from out there!

WI FI: Guests get a code and they have free access to internet.

ACTIVITIES: The owners owe a farm so guests with small children can visit it and see the animals, or get to the vineyards and see how grapes are picked, visit the olive groves and orchards of the family. There is so much to keep everyone busy and happy.
Fishing, snorkelling, and mountain trekking are some other options since the village is surrounded by both sea and mountains.

STUDIOS: The studios on the side of the hotel give the alternative for cheaper accommodation. I had a look in one or two out of curiosity and they are nicely furnished, provided with kitchenette and the right facilities for cooking. Rooms are spacious and all studios face the orange orchard of the yard.

THE VILLAGE: It is a very small fishing village, with a few taverns here and there.
At the other end of the village there is a spring with thermal waters coming out of the ground next to the beach. The temperature is approximately 50 degrees C and I believe it attracts many people from spring till autumn.
So, here at this little village the visitor can really enjoy free thermal baths which unfortunately it was something we found out when leaving the village for home. The properties of the spring which is non-stop are spread throughout the bay so no matter where you swim you can still enjoy them. The closer you are of course the better.

CONCLUSION: In all, the stay was short but I managed to get the whole picture of what the place and hotel have to offer.
I can’t wait to be back but in the meantime I highly recommend it because of its excellent facilities, the impeccable service, its warm hospitality and its breathtaking view.
The owners and everyone involved in this business are doing an exceptional job ….offering more to please each and every guest.

It is located in a little village were families prefer to stay because it is quiet and rarely cars pass from the street. It was clean and had nice view at the sea, but people were not very friendly, breakfast was poor and it gets really boring if stay for more than 2 days. The tavern they sent us is really worth it (great food, good prices). Don't expect any night life!

Room Tip: Definitely go to the tavern they will suggest

The hotel is located in a peaceful fishing village, very close to two ferries. The rooms are excellent for families - on the first floor space for sleeping three children and the gallery upstairs double bed. At the huge balcony you can sit and watch the amazing sea and hear the waves. Excellent breakfast, there is parking and an elevator, hot and hearty hospitality. We will come back again when we're in Greece!
