The Sandi Phala
Ranked #6 of 22 Hotels in Tuban
Reviewed 15 March 2013 via mobile

The first word that came to our minds when we entered the room @ Sandi Phala was ‘artistic’. The rooms are very tastefully done besides being warm & cosy. The detailing is amazing across all elements – right from amazing photo frames on the walls to the linen – even the key chain was in the shape of a nice coral fish!

They washroom is as big as the room – with a 3-step tub – little elements like a wooden ladder instead of the boring towel hangers; frescoes on the wall instead of plain windows – all of it adds to the charm.

There are only 11 rooms in this resort so it fits the brief for a quiet little place amidst the hustle & bustle of Kuta.

The restaurant ‘Ma Joly’ has a fabulous view – the bar is perhaps the closest to the sea in Kuta – remember to have the camera handy during sunset!

The staff is very friendly – for instance one day when we were a little free, they proactively gave us a complimentary drop to a Dive site in Nusa Dua and also arranged our return trip.

If you want to have the best of both worlds – a nice, blissful place within 20 minutes of the party zone of Kuta, this is the place to stay!

We stayed for 5 nights and wanted to celebrate New Year in a nice atmosphere. Rooms are excellent but the service was poor. We were obligated to take a New Years Eve menu of 150 usd each that we knew before we made the booking. For this amount and even more, seen the luxury of this small resort we had high expectations. From 6 to 8 pm they offered free beer and softdrinks. We wanted to start our evening with a cocktail like the evening before (against paiement offcourse), this was not possible. This evening they decided what to eat and to drink, not the guest. Hospitality was not in their mind. The menu was a race against the clock. No ambiance. For having as much as possible guests, foreign people were welcome, even in their shorts. Moreover for them it was possible to choose which part of the menu they wanted while we were obligated to take the whole menu even the courses that we really didn't eat. No choice was possible. About prox 11pm they succeeded to get lost of all guests, nobody was left in the restaurant. A few couples were still on the beach enjoying fireworks from locals. At 11.30 pm we were told we could order a last drink, the bar would be closed even before NewYear! On 12pm there should be champagne. We had to ask twice to receive 2 glasses because the staff was occupied with celebrating and drinking a lot of beer. The band already stopped singing before midnight. It was a horror evening for a lot of money.
If you asked the reception for a taxi they promote there own car who is three times more expensive than a blue bird taxi.
If you have difficult questions on the reception they don't understand you anymore.
The location on the beach as well as the resort itself is beautifull but located in the wrong neighbourhood.
We experienced a lack of hospitality, they are not flexible but want to arrange everything to their comfort. Taking dinner, lunch or massage everything needed to be planned days in advance.
Room service at 22.15 pm was no longer possible ... We did not feel as wellcome guests.
They have no spa, so massage was done in the own room. This feels not the same.
We would never recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: They offer pool villas with garden and ocean view. The garden view villa is larger then the one with...

We have been enjoying dinners at Ma-Joly for years when guests were arriving or departing from the nearby airport. We checked out all the hotels in the area (huge places!) when our kids and grandkids were leaving and decided for the extra little bit it cost us to stay at Sandi Phala. What a great decision! They are very small and service could not be better (though I don't care for them knocking on my door in the morning to see if we are up?). Next time I'll just request them not to disturb if we want to sleep in. Breakfast is beautiful and you certainly won't need lunch! They even sent us off with a bag of cookies knowing we had a 2 1/2 hour drive ahead of us going back home. We'll be back for sure!

It was a nice hotel with excellent service. The room little bit dark and small, but first 2-3 night is perfect place. The main pool and beach very nice, and food is excellent. It has a private beach. Staff are great, helpfull, lovely. Kuta and airport very close, good location.

We had to stay one night in Bali on our way to another island so chose the hotel due its location being close to the airport. Good location for that reason.

The hotel staff were friendly and the hotel was fairly small as described which was good but we felt it seemed a little 'tired'.

Breakfast was really good and included in the room price.

If you want to escape the big resorts and their crowd, Sandi Phala is made for you, 15 suites, traditional Bali style with high ceiling in traditional roof.Very elegant and boutique.
A small detail, but a great plus, bath amenities are "l'occitane".
Very attentive and friendly staff.
Great restaurant, Ma Joly, with wonderful a la carte breakfast, very good menu, French inspired with a local twist.
Very good cocktails to be enjoyed during the wonderful sunset on the beach.
We will definitely come back.
