I didn't rate this place as "excellent" because it's luxurious or perfect according to American standards. I rated it as excellent because it is the perfect place to stay when you're in the midst of an old town with half-timbered buildings and cobbled streets while on the wine route in the Alsace. No, no marbled lobbies or luxury bedding, but it was clean and cozy and we actually had a two story room, which was perfect for our two children. And the bathroom, by European standards, was enormous! Yes, it was a little funky, but that, for me, only added to its charm. The owner was friendly and helpful, and I felt welcomed (I have NOT felt that at many other French hotels we've stayed at!) There is a beautiful little courtyard between hotel buildings, and it appears that you can actually dine out there, though it was too chilly in late October for us to do that. Instead, we ate inside at the restaurant, which is actually a separate business but you can't tell that unless you ask. We did eat at the restaurant, and had a fantastic meal, terrific service, and it didn't cost us a fortune. In fact, what they served my children looked good enough to have been served to an adult- a perfectly cooked, very good quality steak served with homemade fries (we've seen way too many sad looking nuggets, so this was impressive!) Also, by being at Chez Norbert, this means that of course you are in Bergheim, which by itself is worth the trip. I know that other towns are much more popular than Bergheim, but I found it to be very charming and certainly off the beaten path.
Added bonus: Chez Norbert rents bicycles. I'd go back anyway, but I'd certainly go back to do that! I highly recommend staying here if you're traveling to the Alsace!
