“Excellent family hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014

"Itsas mendia" in Basque means "sea mountains". From this small 15 bedroom hotel there are views in both directions - out to sea and across to the foothills of the Pyrenees. The top floor of the hotel has the best views but sea and mountains can be seen from the ground floor. The hotel was extensively modernized and refurbished five years ago by the great grand daughter of the founder of the hotel Our room, which I imagine is typical, had excellent lighting, a wash basin so modern that it had no plug and an excellent "wet room" type shower. The room had, of course, TV, phone and a good selection of soap and shampoo etc. There is a terrace for breakfast in good weather and a very modern looking heated outdoor swimming pool.
But the best feature of the hotel is the courteous and very helpful staff.
About 100 metres from the centre of the little town of Bidart with shops cafes etc.

Room Tip: We had room 202 on the top floor. Wonderful views in two directions of the sea and the mountains

This hotel is a class apart from anything else nearby. It's a very short walk from the square in the middle of the town, so it's very close to bars and restaurants. Diagonally opposite is the route for pedestrian access to the lovely beach; an easy walk downhill - just leave some in the tank for the walk back up! We had a prestige room, which catered

This is the best kept secret of the french Cote Basque. Great location. Beautiful clean lines. Great beds & bed linen. Wonderful, charming staff, who couldn't do enough. We took the hotel to lodge a large family for a wedding.. lots of world travellers in there and they all loved it. We cannot rte it highly enough.

Hotel Itsas Media is a beautiful hotel in the charming town of Bidart. It is Close to the beach and the old and cosy village centre and within easy access to Biarritz and Bayonne. Bidart is a great starting point for trips in the beautiful Basque countryside.
The hotel as such is very old but has been completely renovated recently with very modern rooms and a somewhat cold interior (international and impersonal) decoration - so if you look for a more personal or regional setting this is not the place.
The size of the rooms may differ considerably - our room on the first floor was very spacious with a cupboard for our stuff and a small balcony - my family had a tiny room with just space for the bed but then the balcony was huge. There is a very nice swimming pool with chairs and towels can be picked up at the reception. There is an enclosed parking lot for the guests - a huge bonus as you then don't have to drive around to find a space. Breakfast is not included - but if you choose to take the breakfast it will cost 14 Euros for coffee/tea, bread basket and croissants, juice and fruit. The breakfast is fine and it is great to sit under the shady trees - but if you only want coffee and 2 croissants and a glass of juice you might as well go the square.
The staff is very friendly and helpful and will tell you which restaurants in the area to visit and also book the table for you. Free newspapers in the breakfast room each day. At our day of departure we got free access to one of the rooms to shower and change in - this was so great on a hot day and a late flight. My conclusion: a very good hotel but looking at the things I have mentioned - given the price (225 Euros a night) isn't that what you would expect? In general I'm surprised why hotels so rarely provide furniture for suitcases - it makes the experience so much better when you don't have to lie on the floor to find your clothes.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the more spacious rooms - the small room with the huge balcony got very cramped with...

There is no need to stay in busy Biarritz to see the Basque region; stay here, in this lovely hotel in the small village of Bidart, & you will still be within easy reach of Biarritz, St Jean de Luz, etc.

The Itsas Mendea is a small family-owned & run hotel, which means that all staff really do care about the guests - they want you to enjoy your stay and this comes through in every contact you have with all staff/family.

The hotel has been given a complete make-over in the last couple of years & has a very modern look, with light airy spaces. Our bedroom was spacious, light, & of course had everything you could need on holiday. It had a small terrace with table & chairs too. The public rooms also have a modern look, opening out on to terraces/gardens, with panoramic views. Wonderful large pool, with plenty of sun-loungers. Secure private parking.

The hotel is well-positioned in Bidart, and of course, as Bidart is only small, it is just a short walk to the main square (where there are many restaurants), or down to the sea front (uphill on return!!).

There are plenty of restaurants in Bidart, but we took the advice of the hotel reception, who also booked for us, and everywhere we ate was excellent. If you like fish, I particularly recommend the fish restaurant on the beach-front; the hotel will book it for you & booking is essential as it is very very busy.

Bidart is an excellent base for exploring the Basque region. Biarritz can be reached quickly & easily by bus (cost 1euro); again, hotel will reception will tell you what bus to get & where from. Better than taking your car in & paying to park in Biarritz. Bayonne is only a short drive & is well worth a visit. St Jean De Luz too. And of course many other places in the lovely Basque countryside, all within easy reach of Bidart.

But Bidart itself is a lovely spot, so if you just want to stay-put, Itsas Mendea is the place to do it!

A top class hotel.
Wonderful staff, great rooms, lovely pool so very good on every level. Wish we had stayed longer will defiantly return. The staff could not do enough to help, ordering taxis etc.. Location is very good in the centre of the village 10 minutes drive from Biarritz. Room very quiet, nice beds good linen etc..

Room Tip: 107 has a bath and a super large balcony.

We spent one week in this newly renovated Hotel and enjoyed the modern room
with an incredible view. Young and very pleasant owner and staff who are very
helpful and efficient. Very good breakfast with a large choice of bread and freshly
squizzed orange juice and homemade marmelade. Very convenient location for
visiting Biarritz, Bayonne and St.Jean de Luze. Unfortunately we couldn't use the
Swimming Pool due to bad weather.
