We just got back from Club Hotel Morgan with Rocket ski. Very good value for money, good food great staff and large rooms. The area which we had not been to before was very extensive, mostly wide and well maintained pistes, and totally uncrowded (in January). We have been skiing for a few decades and to many areas, but had not tried this lovely linked area before. It is less than 5 mins to the six lifts that take you to either Vars or the skiing in the large Risoul bowl. Very good for families and older skiers. Compact & attractive village. Mogul bashers & night life ravers go elsewhere!

Room Tip: Choose a high room at the front

We have just returned from a week at Hotel Le Morgan in Risoul passing the Christmas period at the resort.

I'll try and be as objective possible.. The hotel is well situated just 100m to the pistes through a small tunnel across the road from the hotel. It takes about 5 minutes to walk to the ski school meeting place.

We arrived late and it was a bit chaotic while they handed the keys out. The welcome talk was not until the next day by which time we had discovered all we need to. The rooms are standard fare for Rocketski and we as a family had 2 single beds and 2 bunk beds. They were large enough and wam enough. Electric heaters are in the bathroom and main room if needed, but no good for drying stuff. There was a separate bathroom and toilet. We had a small balcony overlooking the street, which was fine.

Being on the 1st floor was quite noisy, with noise from the hotel bar below and the street, but we still managed to sleep ok. There was a bath with shower and we never seemed to run out of hot water. The rooms were not cleaned very well, bins were emptied each day but that was about it. We were a family of four and were provided with 2 bath and 2 hand towels. We asked for more but they never arrived. Nor were they changed until we asked by leaving a note. The reps were friendly but didn't really offer much help unless asked. Most had only been there a few weeks and didn't know that much.

The breakfasts were buffet style and fine, croissants, pan aux chocolat, yoghurts, ham, cheese, bread, fruit, porridge, cornflakes and muslei. Plenty of tea, coffee, hot chocolate ad orange juice. Served from 7.30 - 09.00

The evening meals were just ok, small portions though. The meals were 3 courses with options of starters and a vegetarian main course. The Christmas day meal was really awful.. enough said! The waiting staff were young and seemed inexperienced but were very attentive and polite. Would have been nice to be offered a coffee or tea at the end of the meal.

There is a small bar with quite expensive drinks but there is a happy hour. A bottle of house wine is 10E. They also do bar snacks during the day but we never tried those.

There was a very nasty smell of drains which was omnipresent, but I think this has been a long running problem.

The hotel has on site ski hire located inside the building on the lower floor which is supplemented by the hire shop next door if necessary. Boot fitting was very poor with the girl in charge not offering any advice or help on fitting. The boots were also quite poor. Old style, uncomfortable and very smelly!! The skis were Salomon and well maintained. The boot storage room was reached by going outside the hotel, down some steps and through a door which was never locked. The room wasn't really big enough and didn't cater for snowboards, as such it got very messy. The boots were stored in an unheated, damp room with 1cm of water which you had to wade through each time you put your boots on and off. There were was nowhere to sit while booting up.

Ski passes were ready when we arrived which was good. They took a 2E deposit for each card which was returned on the last day. The booking and organisation of the ski school was chaotic with our kids not getting the entrance cards on time, then issued the wrong ones.. Quality of instruction was fine in a mixed group of French and English kids. My kids really enjoyed their lessons and made great progress, both passing their respective levels. Ski school starts at 09.30. We found if we left the room at 09.00 to kit up we would arrive at the meet point with 10 mins to spare.

There was some evening entertainment organised but it wasn't well attended. The kids did the bum boarding and had great fun.. so did the adults.

Risoul town is small, there are a few supermarkets and fast food places, bakeries etc. All you need really and very close. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from on the night when no evening meal is provided at the hotel but you will pay at least 100E for a family of 4. Unless you head for a pizza from the takeaway for about 20E

Please ensure you have decent travel insurance. The cost for being recovered off the mountain is 'very' high..

The pistes were fine for intermediate and beginers, not so challenging for expert skiers. Most lifts were open as was the link through to Vars. The lifts were quite slow and I found we spent more time on lifts than we did skiing..

The transfer time from Grenoble to Risoul was about 3.5hrs each way, a real drag but unavoidable. Grenoble airport was chaotic.. I don't think they had really geared up for the ski season yet.. too many people and not enough space.

So all in all we had a good time and if you can put up with the rocketski and Hotel Morgan quirks you should enjoy the experience of this resport.

Snow conditions were good, although the pistes could have been groomed better, especially higher up the mountain. We got home safely and with the feeling we'd had a good holiday. Hope this review helps!

Room Tip: Rooms at front have balcony facing ths street. Not too busy though

The Club Hotel Le Morgan is situated in a perfect spot in Risoul a stones throw from the lifts, lift pass office, cash point, shops and all other essential places.
The rooms at the hotel are basic but cover your needs for a ski trip, they are clean and comfortable. The hotel has a nice bar area for your apres drinks before a shower or dinner.
The staff made the trip particularly memorable as they were really friendly and met our needs and nothing was too much trouble.
As a resort Risoul is great for beginners and combined with Vars opens up a lot of terrain for more advanced skiers with plenty of off piste to be had.

I travelled here on an educational trip with a group of around 20 of us (teachers and tour operator staff). We visited several resorts during the week one of which was Risoul and based out of the Clubhotel Le Morgan.

The Morgan hotel could not be better placed and the facilities seemed fantastic. Although we didn't stay we were given a tour of the hotel and shown rooms. All seemed very well cleaned and maintained. Afternoon tea and cakes were taken at the hotel, the staff were freidnly and well presented.

The resort itself is fantastic, somewhat of a hidden gem. The link to Vars ensures enough skiing for the week for advanced skiers however the Bowl into Risoul offers plenty of opportunity for beginners. Ranging from open powder to picturesque tree runs the variety helps keep the resort

I stayed in this hotel last winter and found the hotel to be in fantastic location in the resort of Risoul. It is just across the road from the bottom of the slopes and is right in the centre of the resort itself. Most of the rooms sleep up to 4 people so although they are basic they are also nice and spacious.
The resort itself is very pretty and although I was a beginner it's very well linked with vars so the people I was skiing with (who had skiied for over 30 years) had no chance of getting bored throughout the trip.
Overall I'd definitely go back and wouldn't hesitiate staying in the same hotel :-)
