“Great Location, Friendly Staff.”
Reviewed 15 January 2013

As a larger group we have found chalets/hotels to suit us hard to come by, but in chalet Hotel Les Rhododendrons we have located an absolute gem. The story started in 2011 when a small group of us staying elsewhere in 1800 were looking for a TV to watch a football match, despite being advised that the nearest sky TV was in Plagne Centre we discovered the Bobsleigh Bar, the next night we met the Owner, Mino. The rest is History 26 persons in 2012 and 22 in 2013, this year exceeding our expectations again.

The Hotel is comfortable, good for our group, Facilities are all there Games/TV room, Bar, Restaurant, Gym, conference facility etc.

The welcome was warm and friendly, all 8 of our rooms were ready on our arrival.

The rooms are small, but the facilities are all clean and well maintained. The beds are very comfortable and bedding clean and warm. The showers are cubicles, with curtain (not my preference) but the water was always hot (any time during the day and night)

The Restaurant was great, plenty of food with several different choices daily, we were always served promptly with high quality dishes. The house red served with evening meal has also improved this year, far better than some of the questionable "local wine" we have been served in other chalets in the past. The cakes after skiing were excellent. Breakfast was always good, and if you ask the kitchen will prepare fresh porridge, scrambled eggs with lardons etc, fresh coffee and tea always available.

Transfers arranged by the Hotel from Aime and back to Bourg St Maurice for the Eurostar were seamless. The hotel made several other arrangments for us without question and were always on hand. (I note that some other reviews comment that the reception is closed during the day - yes sometimes, but all you have to do is catch any member of staff and this is always promptly rectified)

The Bobsleigh Bar - the only place in town for a Guinness, Kronenbourg and Magners on tap !! What more could you want. Friendly staff good selection of spirits, bar menu if required (Try the meat feast pizza) Quiz night on Thursday, Sky TV for Sports etc. As a group we bought our own entertainment in the form of themed nights, the staff all joined in, even decked out the bar for us. If you as nicely the staff will even play your tunes if you bring your MP3 player !!

Hire skis and boots are available, with the facility looked after by Mino himself. Any equipment problems are always rectified immediately. The ski locker facilities are in the basement and are subject to a 5 euro depsit for the key, very handy.

The nearest piste is less than 50 metres from the hotel with 1 chair taking you to Plagne centre, Thereafter the Bergerie will take you up to Bellecotte and beyond. This is doorstep skiing ! The more adventurous can ski right back to the hotel.

All in all our experiences of Chalet Hotel les Rhododendrons have been pleasurable, I never usually go to the bother of writing a review, but felt given some of the negative reviews I have read I felt I had to put the record straight.

Thank you to all of the staff, Mino, Camilla, Gina, Tom, Abbey, DJ, Dan, Rich. I can't name you all but suffice to say we will be returning in 2014 !!!!!

All at Southwater ski team.

The hotel wasn t as described on the web site , there was no friendly welcome - we had to find someone so we could check in ( arrived sat 29 dec 2012 approx 2pm)

The rooms were not serviced every day and we had to request clean towels etc. The lack of hot water ( at any time of day ) was more than a little disappointing. The toilet seat was broken .
Had to make tea/coffee on floor as lack of space and cups never cleaned/replaced for whole week. Not every room had a tv.
The hotel decor was very dated and tatty and looks in need of lick of paint.

Breakfast - the urn was never full or hot enough, the fresh coffee was not available for 4 days so a kettle on the floor in dining room was used.
The breakfast selection was very basic and only got hot eggs if in dining room at right time.
Dinner - we requested large table so we could all eat together unfortunately some nights some people had finished their dinners before others had got theirs. The quality of the food was very hit and miss ( lasagne with no pasta ? )
The dining room staff were friendly but was obvious they had no leadership.

The Bobsleigh bar - the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The games room/lounge were cold, un tidy. The tv didn t work, the pool table had a large tear in it and not full set of balls and broken cue, so un playable.
The gym ( or room where chairs were stacked) had a table tennis table in it , unfortunately only broken bats and one ball .
We chose this hotel so the children had some evening entertainment and places to chill out and there was none of that.
Overall it was plain to see that there was no management and the young staff were left th their own devices.
Very poor all round i would not recommend this to anyone.

Where do I start? BASIC, BASIC, BASIC
To say the rooms are basic is an understatement.
The shower is suitable for a dwarf, and the water is so hot, its dangerous. Given the tiny cubicle with a curtain, its easy to touch the mixer and hey presto its scolding hot! The separate WC is so small its a joke. And once the curtain is pulled its pitch black!! (nice)
I've followed these reviews for the past few months and it speaks of needed refurbishment in the summer (last). Well I don't believe anything was done.
Don't get me wrong for a group of guys on a stag party then this would be fine.
Or if you don't mind a 1* room after a days skiing, then this would be OK.
The communal room is bleak and therefore empty.
The bar doesn't even open during the lunchtime period. Guests returning for lunch have to remove boots etc and head to the restaurant. The Bar was only habited by staff at night which was odd. Quite a nice bar though.
The only plus is that it is rock bottom cheap. If it wasn't for that we would have walked out.
I would prefer to spend an extra £150 per person and stay in a hotel or chalet that is inviting.
The WWW is indeed somewhat misleading.
The food was pretty good however, albeit very slow due to limited staff.
The breakfast was bread and scrambled egg. OK ish!!
The drawers had grime and sweet wrappers in etc.....The balconies are scruffy

There's just no refinement at this hotel. It wouldn't be difficult or indeed costly to add some quality as the location and external appearance is good.
What more can I say. I just cant believe all other reviewers stayed at this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room high up front facing.

Stayed over Christmas with two other families and had an excellent stay at Les Rhododendrons . Great location, superb food, really helpful and pleasant staff, fabulous hospitality and even if the quad rooms were very slightly cramped with 4 all other positives more than made up for that. We will definitley be looking to return in the future.

We booked last minute through Ski Beat and got a VERY good deal for Easter 2012. Never been to a catered chalet before and it was fantastic. Sally and Andy were brilliant hosts and the food was plentiful and delicious...real gourmet dining. Its a stunning chalet and not far to the ski lifts. GREAT skiing...last week of the season and we had fresh snow! Would definately recommend Ski Beat, Chalet Florence and Andy and Sally (were we to book through Ski Beat again I would definately ask if Andy and Sally were still there!!!)

As threatened I made a return trip to this hotel for an Easter Ski Trip. I really did not think I could have had a better time as I did at Christmas and perhaps it was the mammoth amount of snow combined with warm temeratures that coloured my view but the whole experience was wonderful. The staff, some new, some old were helpful, warm and welcoming, the food I thought while still plentiful was even better than before and everything ran like clockwork.
The bar had more activities planned this time around and the craic was mighty with fancy dress night and brilliant drinks promotions. I can see with advance notice, how well this will go next year. 1800 is far and away the nicest of the la plagne family, has the attractions to be self contained but a hop skip and a jump on the free bus away from the other resorts. Of course the ski lift is still just 50mts away. I cannot recommend this hotel enough it represents great value for money, convenience and was like a home from home
