We stayed at the Val d'Este for two nights in December after having to leave our apartment. This is a two start hotel and in this respect you should expect bundles of facilities. What you do get however is a very, very warm welcome from the management and a real desire to make your stay comfortable.
The original room we were allocated was a triple on the lower ground floor and to be honest it was not acceptable for a family, maybe three lads on a weekend away but not us. I talked to the management and Sandrine and Christophe could not have been more helpful, They went out of their way to provide us with accommodation that was acceptable. The beds are very comfortable and although one bathroom did not have a shower, our other room did. We had a room overlooking the mountain which was lovely and our Son had a room over looking the street, which he did not find noisy.
Breakfast was 10 euros each and here was plenty of choice, but no hot food, which could be an improvement. however, when you consider that breakfast in a local café cost 30 euro's for three of us, the deal in the hotel was much better.
The hotel is in the middle of the village and you need to either drive or take the shuttle bus to the St Gervais gondola, the walk in normal shoes is only about 15 minutes, but in ski boots carrying skis and boards it is a bit of a trek.
All in all I would definitely recommend the Val d'Este. it is a quaint French alpine village 2 star hotel that is trying to punch above its weight. We will certainly be going back later in the ski season and thanks again to Sandrine and Christophe for making our short stay a very pleasant one.
