A welcomed combination of the rigor in excellence one expects from a classic hotel with a very relaxing atmosphere. Rooms are bigger than anything you will see in Europe, staff is very friendly, the garden is lovely, the pool and sauna (recommended) are very pleasant (with a view to the close by black forest) with no extra costs. The restaurant is renowned, though only had "the small menu" at that particular night. Breakfast is OK. It can only be recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden view --- but do not forget to put down the shades and close the windows to avoid mo...

Standing at the foot of the Black Forest, in the pleasent village of Glottertal, you can find this classic hotel. We stayed in the building opposite to the reception. Rooms were spacious (if not huge by european standards), service was ok (but not excellent, especially by one of the reception employees - for example we were never informed about the Black Forest card giving you some good benefits, although we were staying for 4 nights).

Breakfast was ok, restaurant is very good (check separate review if interested). Moreover I would suggest counting on the pool, especially for the rainy days. Although it is relatively small, we never saw anybody when we visited it - and gave us something to do with our child when it was raining.

Room Tip: Staying on the main building makes it easier to use the pool / sauna

I travel. I have stayed in many fine hotels and eaten in renowned restaurants. When I have business any where in the southwestern part of Germany I will choose this hotel every time. The hotel itself is a relaxing, well appointed, friendly hotel in the heart of wine country. The country side is beautiful for a couple or a family and close enough to major highways to make it a convenient stop to tour the Germany / France region. The prices ate even more reasonable than nearby Freiburg.
The other very notable part of the hotel is the restaurant. Regardless of exchange rate, you will not find a better meal at any high end restaurant. Every dish on the ever changing menu is prepared with such perfection and presentation that one dinner will make you waiting to come back.

I entertain clients in Manhattan, I only wish the chef was there.

Room Tip: All the rooms are large.

Searching on the Internet we found this hotel to use as our base for a motorcycle trip in Schwarzwald. This hotel is a family owned hotel in the small town of Glottertal in the Schwarzwald, a town also known for the mid 1980: s German TV-series "Schwarzwaldklinik". The hotel is located close to the town centre and the church, which could be annoying as the bells start ringing at 6 AM (but that is not unusual in that part of Germany and you get used to it). The rooms are of very good standard, and so are the wellness facilities, such as a heated pool. The hotel produces wine, very good wine. This brings us to the restaurant facilities, and the seven of us in the biker group were all very impressed by the good food. We can only recommend this hotel (owned by a Harley Davidson Road King rider) and the value for money is excellent.

We had a two night stay at Hirschen and had a great time. It is a traditional German style hotel: a bit old-fashioned but very clean and everyone was very friendly & helpful. It was one of the cheapest hotels that we stayed in during our trip through Germany, but we never had the feeling that it was a cheap hotel. We had a spacious family room with a sitting area, two baby beds and even an extra bed: all in a 80’s style and again spotless. The only remark is that I took a while to get warm water in the shower. The hotel staff was very friendly to us and our kids and they are well equipped to host kids (baby beds; kids menu etc). The hotel has a large swimming pool on the 3 floor with an unique view over the village: definitely one of the most spectacular views I have ever had from an indoor pool. It was a bit of a puzzle to get there, but we could stay inside and I find that positive. Dinner and breakfast were great value for money, even serving sekt (German champagne) at breakfast. The possibility to have a drink at their winestube just outside the hotel and on its terrace was great as well. We stayed there after we visited Freiburg and spent the next day in the area which was very beautiful. Overall conclusion: great value for money and I would recommend the hotel to everyone given their great service.

This is a nice hotel, and ideal for an overnight between Central or Southern Europe and the Channel ports. It's an easy day's drive to Zeebrugge or Calais and only just off the motorway. But the rooms vary a great deal. I had problems finding anyone in reception on a Saturday afternoon. There was no bell to ring and no one in sight anywhere. Eventually I found a member of staff int he restaurant. At first i was offered the most awful attic room. On one of the hottest days of the year this was a room without AC and with a small window - I guess the ambient temperature was about 35 degrees - with no real chance of reducing it. This room was inferior to a two star pension and should not really be offered at all at a hotel like this - it ought to be staff quarters at best. When I returned to reception and asked what was available I was given a splendid room with AC, nice views, plenty of space, bath rather than just a shower. Once past reception the staff seemed much better and once in a decent room then ones impression improved a lot. I ate in the Schanigarten of the Beisl opposite which is also part of the hotel and the food comes form the hotel kitchens. Service here was good and the food could not be faulted. Breakfast was adequate though again the service was a little indifferent. Overall I would recommend the hotel but with cautions stated.
