“Am booking for next year!”
Reviewed 20 June 2011

After reading the reviews on here, I was quite worried about going to this hotel. This holiday was the first time we were taking our children abroad. I needn't have worried, this place is fab!
My first thought when I walked into the reception was "WOW". The reception is extremely impressive. The kids loved the splendor of it . Check-in was very quick and efficient.
The rooms were equally impressive and very clean. Apparently the cleaners come in 5 days a week to clean but our room was cleaned for the 7 days that we were there. The bed was very comfy, not hard at all. We noticed that our air-conditioning wasn't working so I nipped down to reception to report it. They apologised and said an engineer would be up in 5 minutes. He was there by the time I got back to the room! There is a charge to use the TV remote control but as we were not there to watch TV, we didn't get one.
Just to be clear, the hotel is on a steep hill. I'm not sure what people are expecting when the brochures make a point of stating this. Its no big deal really as if you do want to venture out anywhere, like Beach Club etc, there is a shuttle bus that runs about every 5-10 minutes from 10-6pm. One tip though, the shuttle bus has break from 1-2. A mini bus replaces it but its very small and they don't mind squashing as many as they can in so try to avoid these times if you have a family.
The pool at the hotel is great. There is a great atmosphere and a snack bar provides lots of snacks and drinks throughout the day, (the paella is gorgeous). On Saturday, the lifeguards brought out a bridge that you had to cross. The kids loved it and so did the adults! The first adult to cross the bridge would win two hours in the spa.
The Beach Club at the bottom of the hill is also great. Lots and lots to do. We went to a water park in Fuenigrola one day. This cost us about 50 euros to get in and to be honest, it was crap compared to the Beach Club. If you want to eat your lunch at the Beach Club, you need to book at the hotel the day before between 8-11am.
This brings me to the food. The comments that have been posted on here have stated that the food is bland and not much choice. This is so incorrect. There is plenty of choice. My children, who usually only want chicken nuggets, were tucking into fish dishes and the carvery for the day. There is chicken nuggets and chips also available, as well as salads, fabulous desserts and soups. My husband reckons the food was the best bit about the holiday!
The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food staff in particular are lovely. They pay special attention to the children which impressed me quite a lot.
The spanish do descend on the hotel at the weekend. To be honest, I would say this is a compliment to the hotel. It makes no difference to the holiday whatsoever.
The entertainment for the kids were great with a mini disco etc. The only negative I have is that the entertainment for adults is quite poor. Having said that, this hotel is not for couples, its most definately for families. Basically if you are a couple and you don't want kids around you, this hotel is not for you.
Ignore the negative comments, really do. This is a great all-inclusive and I have already booked for next year!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner were pretty good, a bit samey, but i like that personally... there's a lot of choice.
Rooms were nice, clean and well equipped.
Hotel itself is nice, but i felt that there wasn't enough to do, especially for young children, they had soft play and ball ponds etc, but only in kids club if you left your kids in there alone, i took my daughter on holiday to be with her, not leave her in kids club! it would have been nicer to have been able to go in with her and let her play for a while. There was absolutely nothing for a 1 year old to do. None of the entertainment was geared towards little ones either, they had a kids disco from 8.30-9pm! by that time my daughter can't keep her eyes open!!
It would have been nice to have had entertainment for kids from around 6-8, then the adult shows etc from 8...
The location is rubbish, it's in the middle of no where (we knew this when we booked though) we walked 4 miles before we found any shops! it's a shame because the hotel was really nice but the location really lets it down.
Other reviews have said about the 'massive' walk up and down the hill to and from the hotel... which unless your the laziest person in the world.. is rubbish!! it's an easy walk up a slight incline, were not the fittest of people but it was a nice easy walk up and down and that was pushing a pushchair up too! and there is a shuttle bus running constantly up and down anyway.... the 'massive hill' up and down from the beach is also rubbish! it's about 20 steps! again easily done even with a pushchair!
Beach club was nice, lots to do, good for all ages, we had ages ranging from 1 year, 11, teens, 20's to 50's and there was something for everyone... wave pool is very dangerous though, i am a strong swimmer and i could have easily drowned, it was very scary! only downside to beach club was you had to book lunch 24hrs in advance which is a pain, we didn't always decide to go to the beach club until the morning, meaning no lunch, so i had to go hunting for lunch for my baby daughter!
i have to point out that over the course of 14 days 9 out of our party of 11 had sickness and diarrhoea!! i can't say it was definitely from the hotel, but in my opinion it had to have been!! just a warning!
overall it's a lovely hotel, but needs massive improvements in most areas, we had a really lovely 14 nights there but i don't think i would go back.

Room Tip: room 242, a junior suite, great views pool/sea

I cannot understand how this hotel can get anything but great reviews. Have just returned from a week staying there with hubby and 15 month old. It was great. So lets break some myths..... it was very very clean - spotless. The food was brilliant (I agree not always piping hot but warm and very very fresh - PLENTY of choice). The staff were all very nice and helpful. The rooms were perfect, very stylish and plenty of space. The beach club is excellent fun for all ages and the food there is very good too. The entertainment is not great for grown ups but is passable and for kids it is excellent.

If you have children this is fantastic, they are very well catered for whilst you feel like you are not slumming it as hotel is so nice. If you dont have children - dont go. Honestly this would have been my idea of hell before I had baby (not because it is awful but because it is clearly a family resort). The issue of location is exactly like all the other posters say - it is in the middle of nowhere - if you like to wander around shops and bars dont go here. That said we got a taxi (cant be bothered with buses with pushchair etc these days! however there were lots of buses if you want) into Fuengirola and into benalmadena and both resorts were ok. Fuengirola a bit "holiday resort" but has a big market on a Tuesday which we went to. Benalmadena was very pretty and you can do lots of boat trips from here. Taxi was about £10 euros each way to both. We also did a Thompson trip to Marbella which was also very nice and made me want to be very rich!!!

TIps - you have to book the resturant in the beach club in advance as it gets booked up. However both days we went we were told it was fully booked so we chanced our luck at the door on both occasions and got in! You get one night at one of the other themed resturants as part of your AI. We didnt get chance as we left it until three nights before we were leaving and it was fully booked - so book early. Go to the Thompson meet and greet (if you with them of course!) as it was worth it as the reps are really nice with good local knowledge and best bit of all - not hard sell at all, unlike many other thompson stays I have had. Keep going through channels on the TV in your room as there are lots of british ones but take a bit of finding. We were in a room overlooking the hills/sea and road, it got no sun after lunch but we didnt care, however if you are a sun worshipper you might so ask to be overlooking the pool. Fill in your paperwork on the bus when your rep gives it to you or you cant check in. The queues were huge and everyone was frantically scribbling to get info down to check in. Do it before and you can swan right in there!! Deposits for towels is stupid - £15 euros each towel! As is process for getting them - just be prepared!

All in all a great hotel and being AI is well worth it as the euro is out of control - v expensive to eat out. Local drinks were all included (red wine was very nice!) and as I have already said the food was lovely and I am honestly very very hard to please!!!!

We booked this holiday then started reading the reviews! I wish we hadnt there was a couple of bad reviews and i thought "what have i booked! " take no notice the hotel is immaculate and clean, our room and bed linnen was changed every day.The pool was a bit cold the first week but warmed up the second week and was great. The snack bar was good served toasties hot dogs hamburgers chips pasta fruit ect.breakfast had really good choice there was everything there! lunch and tea there is still alot of choice i would say there is something even for the fussiest eaters.the entertainment could be alot better but we made our own entertainment it wasnt the end of the world! they did alot of adult entertainment through the day and seemed to have forgotten about the children my son was nine and was to old for kids club but to young for day time activities ( you have to be 12) the hotel is in the middle of nowhere but we knew when we booked this and it is only a bus ride to eiether town.beach club is great for kids (and adults) be weary of the wave pool though a few people had to be pulled out by lifeguards when we were there.on the last day of departure they do try and cut your band but we didnt check out and no one bothered we still ate and dran that day.The spa was good it was 11 euros for half a day .and the kids loved the kiddies spa .the bus down to the water park comes every 5 mins or so he litterally picks up at the hotel drops off at the bottom and comes back up. we walked up a couple of times with the push chair and its not a problem. The kids pool is at the top of some steps within the hotel and also has access for you to push the pram up again no major work out. The hotel staff are courteous and although it restricts you to 5 drinks per person they are not strrict on this as other hotels are. Overall we had a great holliday i carnt moan about this hotel at all it is worth every penny you pay it is very expensive in spain to eat and drink and i feel we spent our money well here

Have just returned from a weeks stay at the Polynesia. Having read some reviews before going, I must admit I was a bit apprehensive, but after being there a couple of hours my worries disappeared.

It annoys me a little that people do a bad review when they get home because they have not done their homework when picking a holiday.

The Polynesia is a themed hotel and part of a large complex with several hotels and a 'beach club water park'. Being a themed hotel, it obviously cateres for families a lot more than couples or young singles.

I travelled with Thomson on an all inclusive package with my wife and 2 kids (14 and 3). We had a junior suite which overlooked the outdoor stage area.

The hotel is quite large and the communal areas are impressive with many features including a large koi carp pool, bird avairy and many sculptures and achitectural features

Location - the hotel is away from town with an inexpensive bus (1.25 Euro each way) from outside the complex gates. Beware - the buses get very crowded and dont stop if full - taxis always available (about 12 Euro to town). The Polynesia is up a steep hill (about 4 - 5 minutes walk from complex gate) with a free bus service from the gates to hotel during the day (9am to 6pm). The beach is across the road and down a path (about 5 minutes walk from the gate)

Room - the room consisted of an open plan lounge/kitchenette area where the sofa also doubled as two single beds. Kitchenette has electric hob, fridge, kettle and toaster. A largish bedroom with two four foot beds pushed together to make a very large double, bathroom with bath, seperate shower, two sinks, toilet and a good sized balcony with table and chairs. Room was cleaned thoroughly every day - towels can be changed daily if required

Restaurants - we mainly used the buffet restaurant where the service was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful. Many reviews have complained of cold food and lack of choice, however with two fussy eaters in the family, there was always something to eat. Yes, there is always pizza, chips, burgers, hot dogs etc, but there is also always other choices with at least three types of fish, vegetaian choices, pasta dishes, three or four meat dishes and a varied salad counter. The (hot) food was always hot and always plenty to choose from unless you arrived at the end (last 20 minutes) of each sitting when they seemed to be running low on most dishes (but if requested would always cook more). We didnt eat in the chinese restaurant as the kids dont like chinese, but the Polynesian restaurant was also excellent.

The snack bar by the pool (self service buffet) was constantly being refreshed with pizza, chips, burgers etc.

Pools - the pools seem to be heated only by the sun, and as it was sunny all week, they were fine temperature wise, but I can understand why people would complain if the weather was not so good (we had sun all week). There is a small childrens pool away from the main pool (up a steep slope or steps) with a small play area, but as the main pool has a gentle slope from zero depth to 1.5 metres, there is no need to go there.

Beach club - this is the water park - free to use unless you want to use the flumes when you have to rent a large rubber ring (6 euros per day plus 14 euros deposit). Again th pool heating is by the sun, so is probably cold when the sun is not shining.

Entertainment - entertainment is available all day, and if inclined until 2am in the morning at various places around the hotel. The main entertainment is in the outside stage area with a kids disco, followed by various other entertainment and shows until about 11 - 11.30pm when it moves indoors to other bar areas. Every night was something different, we had a flamenco show, magic show, disney themed musical, birds of prey display, bingo and hypnotist to name a few.

Kids Club - the hotel operates a kids club (ages 3 to 12) every day where fully trained staff entertain the kids with various activities (we had difficulty tearing our 3 year old away he loved it so much) and a baby club (extra charge) for under 3s if required

Spa and gym - the gym is free to use, but the spa is extra - we used the gym but not the spa - so cant comment n prices.

Shop - a bit pricey, but contains everything you might need or forget to take with you. Yes the souvenirs are over-priced and the everyday goods (milk, drinks etc) are more than supermarket prices, but this is a hotel shop at an all-inclusive hotel - not a supermarket. (stays open till 10pm)

Room service is available - but pricey (20 euro charge) - so we didnt use (not that there was any need to)

Other facilities include games room (coin operated with pool, air hockey and various others), reading room, cinema, hairdressers, beautician.

Overall we found this hotel to be very good. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The hotel was always clean. All-inclusive does run from 12 noon on day of arrival to 12 noon on day of departure - but I have found this to be common practice

Would I recommend - definately yes.

I cannot big this hotel up enough. Rooms are more like little flats! So nice balcony is a bonus waking up and going on it in the morning is beautiful. Always clean maids clean it everyday just put the sign on the door when you go out and it's cleaned when your back.

Pool was cold but when your hot that's what you need obviously!! Music around the pool so you get the holiday feeling it's great! Pool side bar amazing can order what you like when you like all inclusive is great!

The food was good everyday we was full up if the food was cold it's because the people were walking around getting their food as there is so much choice by the time you sit down it's not as hot but still tastes nice.

The shop was brill bit pricy but still good, hotel inside and out is beautiful I can't believe how breath taking it is, entertainment is good at night kids love it.

Beach club is brill get the free open top bus down hill walk over the bridge then your there, kids and adults will love it! Hotel is in middle of 2 main towns you can get anus to either only over a euro so cheap and great day out! Thompson reps and staff friendly and helpful and on your arrival you get water and food in fridge! Bonus :)

Overall amazing! I'm defiantly going again without a doubt I loved every minute!!! People who moan are pathetic there is nothing wrong with a 4 and a half hotel. You need to book now! :D

Pools are freezing!!! same buffet food from 11am to 5pm for 14 days!!!!!, cold pizza that tasted like salt, or chicken nuggets/ cold chips/ cold pasta.or if you was lucky you would get a cheese and ham toasty wow thats if some one else hasint beat you to it!!!... baby pool at the top of a slope my legs were killing me walking up it with a pram and my flip flops kept falling off and i'm a fit girl of 31.... no life guard at the baby pool plus its freezing the play area near the baby pool is for ages 4 years above, no swings just 2 slides and a bit of a climbing frame......my litte girl was only 1 years of age when we went so she had nothing to play with, if you want to use the toilet or want food you have to walk back down the slope unless you want to take the steep steps, ..... the entertainment gets even better!!!! every night kids disco from 8 till 8.30 then they start a show at 9 till 10 then the night is over you have to make your own bit of fun!!! your all inclusive wrist bands run out at 12 mid night so you have to pay for drinks...
the hotel is stuck in the middle of no were so if you want a break from this boring hotel you might have to take a taxi as the buses are always busy the cheapest taxi to the closest town is 15euro ...... we ended up spending 2 grand in 14 days for 2 adults and a baby of 12months old wasint impresses ... we had to amuse our selfs as this is a boring hotel ....
the baby jars of food are made by nestle and look and taste like paste for a butty the baby wouldint touch them these cost 2euro each in the hotel shop but are 1 euro at the super market... the pools at the beach club are also freezing so dont let your travel agent con you like they did us!!! the indoor spa is not in with the price either if you want to use this you must pay also for the indoor pool.... the kids or babies cant use the big indoor pool to be with there parents they have to stay seperate .... our hotel room was lovely and clean that was the best part about it.. also if you want to wash your clothes its 9euro a wash expensive
