“hotel great but staff very unhelpful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2011

hotel was great . rooms very clean. credit to the maids. dining room staff need lessons in manners. food just acceptable. we went half board. great location veiw from our room fabulous. entertainment poor. one week was enough. on the good side the hotel was very quiet no one walking around rooms in high heals . no noise from other rooms . only down side they allow smoking on balconies if like us you get a cigar smoker up at 7am very unpleasant you have to keep the patio doors closed.

Room Tip: choose a room with even number.

We stayed at this hotel the beginning of October, and although some of the public rooms are a little dated, the bedrooms seem to have been newly refurbished and are quite acceptable. The food in the restaurant was palatable and varied, with enough variety to suit anyone's taste. The average age of the guests whilst we were there was 65 plus, although it wasn't peak season so perhaps younger people go there at other times. We found the big drawback was all of the steps and stairs that you had to go up and down to get anywhere in the hotel, we were staying in the annex building and the only way to get into it was through the main building and up and down lots of stairs, which isn't much good with all your luggage! We managed because we are younger but I don't know how anyone elderly or disabled would manage to get around the place as there didn't seem to be any assistance available. We hired a car whilst we were there and had to pay for a parking ticket every time that we wanted to go out, so if you went out three times over the course of the day it was very costly, it would have been much better to charge a daily tariff if you were staying at the hotel. We have stayed in much more upmarket hotels and not been charged for parking. The location is very good, right on top of the beach and lots of little bars and restaurants.

We were looking for a last minute holiday last half term and the travel agents were literally running out of holidays. The Triton looked nice in the brochure and seemed in an ideal location (for Costa Del Sol). I thought it was a bit pricey but, there again, we were prisoners of the half term.

Good bits -
Pretty gardens and pools.
Good location - right on the promenade, next to the beach and a ten minute stroll to the harbour.
Attractive communal spaces - big sofas, nice conservatory type bit, pool bar etc. and all seemed clean.
Reasonable prices within the hotel - drinks, food.

OK bits -
Decoration / maintenance - a bit tired looking on close inspection, in hotel room and around the hotel.
Entertainment - day activities seemed OK but only two nights of evening gigs were bearable.
Accommodation - a family room consisted of two double beds in one room - no privacy/peace for one week!
Nice clientèle

Bad bits -
The food in the restaurant - I am surprised there hasn't been an outbreak of food poisoning. All hot food was kept at a tepid temperature, all chilled food was also kept at a tepid temperature - dangerous. The food was set out nicely but was either tasteless or tasted foul. The anxiety about getting ill prevented me from trying potentially lethal food like paella and soft cheese. We ate out four nights out of seven so it was false economy booking half board.
Cleanliness in the lounge bar - smelly, dirty glasses every night.
The staff - not exactly unfriendly but not overly welcoming and easily agitated. Attempts to get food cooked properly were met with harassed looks and god forbid you sat on an unlaid table....
The pool was FREEZING - the children were blue and shivering all week.

I would go again, merely for the location and pool area, but I would go 'room only' and ensure I knew where the nightlife was.

Hotel was lovely, rooms were cleaned everyday clean sheets and towels.
Food not always hot and no lunch time food on offer. Plenty of sun loungers always available and it was half term for schools.
Entertainment poor.
Very dissapointed in guests having to pay to park their cars in the hotel car park every day.

This is my seventh time to Benalmadena and this hotel was the best out of all of them for locality (no steep hills), food, service and cleanliness. The room was large clean and more modern than I have stayed in before in Benalmadena. The hotel is large but it is very friendly and the staff are more than helpful. The food was excellent, tasty and a massive choice to choice from.

The location is ideal for young and the elderly, the front of the hotel brings you on to the main road where you can get the local buses which are very reasonable in price. The back of the hotel brings you on to the beach, it is a very short walk to the marina.

I find it is getting a bit expensive to eat round the marina this year but we found the small restaurants just out the back gates of the hotel very reasonable. We got a lovely lunch for under 10 euros.

At night we spent most of our nights in Tapas wheel and punters which is owned by Iian and his staff are really friendly, good mixture of ages in the bar and a good atmosphere. Sangria large jug 7 Euros, pints 1.50Euros and spirts 2.50Euros. Free jukebox which was great (turn left out of hotel just up the road on the opposite side).

The spa was wonderful for 7 euros with steam room, sauna and swimming pool would loved to have a facial but at 67euros they were too expensive it put people off from treating themselves. If they would bring the price down they would have got my business. We used the spa for three days and it was empty everyday, it made my holiday having this luxury well worth the money.

Overall fantasic break, I will be be booking this hotel next year for sure.

Triton Hotel Benalmadena – October 2011

Just returned from a very enjoyable week at this lovely hotel. We were allocated a room on the top floor of the annexe – this is 100metres from the main building reached by an enclosed walkway. The porter will take your cases over for you. Because the site is hilly, this walkway contains a number of steps – the largest run is at the hotel end – two sets of about 10 steps in marble – the ones further along are only a few steps and are carpeted. If you have walking difficulties do not accept a room in the annexe or you will have problems. The annexe has 2 lifts, one is round the corner from the easily visible one. Our room was fine, clean and big enough (though smaller than the twin rooms in the main building) the TV got a few English speaking channels, but the picture was poor on BBC World Service. There is a hairdryer, but no kettle so we took our own. In the main building there is an electrical socket at the side of the bed as well as in the bathroom, but we just had the one in the bathroom – not too bad. The bathroom is well appointed – at last somewhere to put your toiletries rather than on the floor as usual. The bath is quite shallow, so not too hard to get into. The shower is over the bath. I had no problems until the last night when I turned round in the shower and fell out over the side of the bath – funny now, but not at the time – ask for a non-slip mat. I certainly never expected to fall. Towels were changed daily even though we had hung them up and sheets were changed twice or three times in the week.
There is free Wi-Fi in the hotel, but it works best in Reception in the Main Building.
The food was excellent with lots of choice. Plenty of freshly cut fruit at breakfast, two types of cava, freshly cooked omelettes, pancakes, ham and fried eggs at breakfast, the usual continental breakfast items, Spanish ‘chocolate con churros’, hot choices, different breads and cereals and yogurt. The usual make your own toast – but then it can be exactly how you like it. In the evening there were various meats and fish cooked freshly, plus salads, pasta dishes and food in the hot stands. A word of warning – the hot plates in the warming cupboards can be very hot!
The pool bar serves snacks – nearly everything with chips though. There are four pools – two for children and two larger ones. We were in the pool every day even though it was October.
There was an entertainment programme in the day that included aquafit, rifle shooting and a form of crazy golf. I can’t comment on the evening entertainment as we were on a dancing holiday and had our own entertainers.
There are bus stops outside the hotel, but as we never used the bus, I can’t comment on the frequency. There is a sightseeing bus – tickets from Rubens travel agency/money exchange or from the Dove Park (Parque Las Palomas on the maps on the promenade) further along the promenade to the roundabout with the flags, then a short walk up a fairly steep hill. Well worth the walk – the park is beautiful with rabbits and chickens roaming freely, a lake with a fountain, cactus garden, a model boat pond where you could put money in and rent a model boat to sail and a very reasonably priced cafe.
We booked a day trip at Rubens and he warned us to be careful about pickpockets at the bus stop – we thought he meant outside the hotel, but later we found out that some of the people who had booked a trip to Gibraltar (where a passport is required) had their passports stolen at the services where they stopped for coffee – so perhaps that was what he meant. Be aware of this if you book that trip. Also be aware that you are on the bus for a long time, ours was making pick-ups as far away as Estepona
I can’t comment on the evening entertainment as we were on a dancing holiday and had our own entertainers.
I loved the hotel, the food, the position, the pools etc. Sometimes the reception staff were a little frosty, but they could thaw and make unexpected jokes. The cleaning staff were friendly and efficient. I will definitely return. I thought all in all that it was a lovely hotel and any niggles are outweighed by the many positives. Can’t wait to go back – I loved it!

Room Tip: I used Babelfish to translate my request into Spanish for a room overlooking the pool and on a high...
