“Nice on the Outside”
Reviewed 22 July 2011

stayed at the riviera from 10th to 17th july, on arrival we were allocated room 224, which has an eye level view of the crazy golf course!!!! and loads of bird droppings on the balcony, we asked to be moved the next morning and were informed that there was " no possibilty of moving rooms as the hotel was fully booked" when i indicated i would be willing to pay for an upgrade, room 405 became availiable, i thought miracles did not happen!!!!, the food was good and the restaurant staff were pleasant and helpful, this is definately not a 4 star, it may have been 30 years ago, but it needs modernising, the thomson rep was pathetic and did not want to know about anybodys problems, she told us that "she had seen every room in the hotel and was not aware of any problems" different planet comes to mind! all she was concerned about was getting a good review so that there would be a job through the winter for her. there were several thefts from the hotel grounds, and the management were apathetic to say the least, what happens is,the thieves sit on the promanade wall opposite the gate to the hotel and wait for someone to use thier card to gain enterance then follow them in and help themselves to whatever is on view. apart from that the hotel is in a great location and the resort is nice. the marina is really nice and the apartments that overlook it are amazing, prices not too bad same as home, the hercules carvery is a must, all in all i would return to this hotel but would book direct with them to ensure a nice room

Room Tip: upgrade before you go

We stayed at the hotel from 1st - 11th July. The best thing about the hotel, is that its adults only so no nasty children. I agree with the other comments about the rooms; they are quite old and do need updating but the bed were semi-comfortable and the water was hot and plentiful.

The food was good. I am extremely fussy when it comes to buffet food but I found lots of eat. The ice creams are really good too.

The rep wasn't very helpful and was actually quite rude to one lady who was in front of us in the queue waiting to pay for a trip. We went to the Fortuna Show one night at the Casino. The show was fantastic but the transport back to the hotel was awful. We waited for 30 mins for the coach and then fed up and got a taxi back.

Overal the holiday was very good though and I would have no problems with going back.

This hotel is rather tired but the staff and the food have improved from last year. In our room the nasty carpets had been replaced by laminate flooring, this made an amazing difference! The quality of the food also had improved. One tip is, if you book with the Thomson group, always book a taxi transfer!!!! This is not only quicker, more reliable (not having to wait for guests from other hotels) but also cheaper than the coach transfer.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room (on a busy main road)

This hotel is as stated nice enough, its small but friendly, and is on the two occasions we have stayed there been totally filled with friendly English couples, no roudy children are thankfully allowed.

The only thing i would advise is to definately email or phone them well in advance to request reserving you a room on the poolside of the hotel and preferably high up, as otherwise you will not be able to sleep because there is a very busy noisey road which right outside the front.
tThe food we found caters mostly to red meat dishes, so if you love steak or beef you will have lots of choice, if like me you like white meat, then that only, ever comes along every so often, salads are good though.
Best till last the pool is really nice , but the towels go on the beds real early, so best seats get taken quickly, but the pool is located with a lovely view of the beach.

Room Tip: reserve rooms poolside ahead of time.

I dont know why anyone could moan, it is a cracking hotel food very good, staff very helpfull especially Francisco on the desk he is really helpfull. Pool really tidy and plenty of room, no kids so it is very quite and the lift is a pleasure to get the beach.
I would definetly stay here again, I think a lot of the moaning is from residents who probably get the "worst" rooms ie; next the road ground floor? but i dont know this because we were in the best room at the hotel.
Again, fantastic time, clean, friendly and good variety of food daily, you must go and see!!

Booking it with Thomson's, me and my friend hadn't heard of the resort never mind the hotel but as a last minute deal at £340, we got it quite cheap for half board. We overheard some people at the pool paying £600 odd, and it wasn't worth that much!
The hotel was mainly centered around older people, although there was the odd couple and on our last two days a hen party - the entertainment is focused towards the older generation. My friend and I are both 18, and found the 24 hour square, a 5 minute walk from the hotel a lot more up our street - with more younger people and clubs open till 4/5.
The hotel was very, very, very dated! Carpet in the room was grubby and beds were rock hard - sleeping on the sun loungers was more comfy.
Drinks were over priced in the hotel, and even though it says you can't take your own drink to the pool - I advise you to go to the supermarket and buy water for 30cent for a 1.5l bottle rather that 2euros at the hotel.
Food in the hotel was ok, nothing amazing. A man going for 18 years spoke to us and said that the food had down graded since he'd been coming here.
The holiday was relaxing and you can't fault the views. Staff are friendly and check-in was quick. But I wouldn't pay more than £340 for this hotel as it is no where near a 4*, just a average 3*.

Room Tip: 517 - view of sea and road

First of all, yes there stains on the carpets in the rooms but the stars for hotels are awarded on the facilities not the fittings and The Riviera Hotel is deserving of 4*. At the time we were there, the age ranges of the guests varied from young couples in their 20s to small groups of elderly couples and everything in between.

Check in was very fast and efficient by a friendly member of staff. Actually, no matter what department, all the staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms are big, comfy (on the hard-side) beds, good sized balcony, efficient and quite air-con, big bathroom with a great shower and toiletries and even a reasonable hair-dryer. Towels were changed every day even if we hung them back up to be reused. We had a room on the west side of the hotel (afternoon sun), very close to the sea and did not hear any traffic noise at night (with the door shut as we needed the air-con on), I was not overly aware of the traffic noise when briefly sitting on the balcony waiting for the husband to finish getting ready for the evening.

The food is good – I have had better 4* hotel evening meals but I can assure you, it’s better than any 3* hotel! Breakfasts are top notch. The best bit is, as it’s a no kids hotel, it’s all very civilised and calm in the dining room – which has stunning views. The lunchtime snacks at the poolside bar were very good and good value for money compared to the bars on the promenade.

The pool area had plenty of sun-beds and there are sun-beds available in the tiered gardens. It’s all very peaceful due to the lack of kids. The pool itself is very clean. Despite the signs, there are the usual silly o’clock sun-bed hoggers but you can get a bed most of the time in any area. Beware of the gardens – people had phones and iPods nicked. OK, they you should look after them and keep them out of sight, but you do get complacent. But this did mean that thieves are watching for an opportunity as this happened in a five minute window when the area this happened was totally empty of guests (as we were at lunch or in the pool or popped to the beach). The hotel reception/management were not at all supportive when this happened despite there being evidence to identify who did the stealing and they said that the police would not be interested.

We did not use the indoor pool, nor the spa or gym facilities.

We did not bother with the evening entertainment (which seemed low-key and not that brilliant) and did not really use the main bar. We did finish our bottle of wine from our last dinner watching the sun go down from the bar’s outside terrace as it has a fantastic view.

We are not lovers of Benalmadena (it’s Blackpool with sun) but as this was a quick, cheap 5-night trip for us we put up with the place and just used the Star Bar over the main road for a few drinks in the evening. We booked the hotel via Thomson a week before travel at a great rate. In summary, for a similar short break within spitting distance of Malaga airport (€25 in a taxi) we’d happily go back to The Riviera Hotel again and would recommend it.

Room Tip: Ask for one as close to the prom as possible (low number) to reduce any chance of traffic noise.
