Just returned from a 10 day stay at this hotel. We have stayed in the Benalmadena area several times in the past, but decided to try a different hotel as a base for our holiday.
We intended to go out and re-visit local sights and attractions (marina, park, cable car etc) during the day, and our favourite bar (Buddy's) at night; but because the hotel had so much to offer, we ended up just popping out for lunch, and staying in at night to watch the hotel entertainment!
That probably makes us sound very boring and 'sad', but the hotel had everything we needed for a great holiday.
I understand it was refurbished last year and the result is a very clean, modern look with spacious rooms, all with at least side sea view.
Our room had a huge double bed, walk in shower, twin wash basins, wooden floors and flat screen TV. Fridge/Mini Bar and safe could be hired at 3 euros a day each if required. The lighting was good and an added bonus was the large double sided make up/shaving mirror in the bathroom.
We were on the 5th floor overlooking the pool as well as the sea, and although in our opinion a better view than the rooms on the other side, we only got the sun during the earlier part of the day, but we spent so little time in the room, it didn't matter.
The gardens and terraces were beautiful, and although the hotel was almost full, plenty of space, sunbeds and parasols. On some of the garden levels there were also luxury, double sunbeds with thick, adjustable mattresses and their own canopies. We felt very spoilt and relaxed and it was hard to tear ourselves away for a light lunch, especially after the big breakfast!
For a reasonable cost, lunches were available at the pool bar, but just to make sure we got a little exercise some days we walked a few minutes along the sea front to one of the many cafes/restaurants, which serve meals to suit all palates, appetites and budgets. Especially good value is Palm 5, a few minutes walk to the right of the hotel.
The hotel food was excellent. At both breakfast and dinner, there was so much choice. I won't go into great detail, because there was so much on offer, so if you couldn't find something to eat here, then I don't think you would be satisfied anywhere.
In the main dining room it was buffet service, plus the 'show' cooking with the usual meat/fish/vegetable choices, and also a Tapas Corner at dinner, which made a great change from the normal starters available.
Guests were also able to dine once a week in the a la carte restaurant, which has to be booked in advance, but we didn't bother as we were more than happy with the buffet.
The wine with the evening meal was quite cheap @ 7.50 euros for a reasonable bottle of house wine. The bar has a 'Happy Hour' 3 evenings a week starting at 7.30pm, but the drinks are sensibly priced anyway.
During the day there were activities available such as aqua gym, pilates, yoga, darts, mini golf, pool and an afternoon quiz. None of these were intrusive and guests were never badgered into joining in but those that did had a good time.
The evening entertainment started with another quiz and a daily 'Riviera Riddle'. Both were optional but were good fun. This was followed by some sort of live music and/or singing during which guests could dance, followed by a cabaret at 10.00pm. During the 10 days we were there, it differed every night, but we enjoyed them all, especially the Argentinian Gauchos, Il Divo tribute act and the obligatory Flamenco dancers.
All the staff at the hotel were friendly, efficient, hard working and helpful, especially the entertainment 'team'.
There were two people organising day and night time entertainment and they worked so hard.
When we arrived Josh was just finishing his contract and we only saw him for a couple of days but he was very good and had a lovely singing voice.
He was replaced by the lovely Laura who is equally as good, very friendly and delightful company.
Last but not least - a special mention has to go to Danny who is a superstar! He has so much talent and energy, and is a natural entertainer. Thank you Danny for all the laughs, it was great meeting you and Laura during our stay.
I can't think of anything that would put us off going back to this hotel, in fact we are already thinking about it!
I've just noticed the length of this review, and for those of you that stayed until the end, if I've missed out anything, feel free to message me!

Just returned from a week at the riviera, a couple in our 50s with a young outlook, the hotel attracts an older clientele. Food, cleanliness, and service of
a good standard, lovely pool and garden areas for sunbathing, plenty of beds and parasols.
Lift to promenade level, approx 15mins walk to marina. Plenty of local bars, and beachside restaurants for lunchtime snacks or traditional Spanish fare.
Entertainment more suited to the 'older' people, but that's fine with me, I prefer the quality of hotel and then go and look for my own entertainment. Week half board includes visit to A la Carte restaurant a pleasant evening.
Large comfortable room, very clean, excellent value, couldn't fault it.

Room Tip: Room 708 had afternoon sun and was away from the road

I needed a quiet and restful break and got what I wanted, a lovely seaview room and comfy bed ,nice bathroom, no disco noise etc. just the sound of the sea. A well run hotel, tastefully refurbished, clean and tidy. Food quite satisfactory with nice fresh salads at dinner and an excellent breakfast spread with lots of fresh fruit, plenty of choice- also must add, lovely staff.

However, the resort area is tacky - too many low quality bars on the main drag ( the sort with all day English breakfasts, John Smiths beer and footy on the telly) so nowhere to go on an evening that is a bit upmarket.
Otherwise, a good location with many travel possibilities due to excellent bus services right outside.

My husband and l have just returned from a long weekend in Belamedena, having read mixed reviews about this hotel before we left, we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel has been modernised to a good standard ,the beds are very comfortable and the rooms large and airy. The staff at the hotel were friendly and efficient and laura on the entertainment team was great fun.We stayed halfboard and we found plenty of choice and for such a large hotel the food was of a good standard.Much of the clientel at this time are elderly and the entertainment is geared towards this age group. we hope to return later on in the year and we would definetly consider this hotel again

I've stayed at the Riviera a few times, and yes maybe you don't know the numbers on the t.v. but what is hard about flicking through. How can you miss the swimming pool? The lift is great, it takes you right down to the little gate at the back of the garden which leads onto the prom. Anyway, I love this hotel, last time I tried it was full, to me that says quite a lot. Hope to go again very soon. Food great, staff (if you actually talk to them) are very helpful also the cleaning ladies are more than helpful if you need anything extra. Have to read more than one rating to get a truthful view of this hotel.

Mrs. M. Woods Cheshire.

Room Tip: Corner suites are great, get lots of sun and bigger balcony, also away from any road noise.

We were transferred to the Riviera by Medplaya as they had overbooked our original hotel. Although they only gave us 24 hours notice we were delighted to be transfered from a 3 star to a 4 star and our initial reaction on arriving was good. However over the three days we stayed there there were things that began to irritate us.
Firstly the lack of information both in the foyer and the bedroom. e.g. there was no plan of the hotel to show us where various activities could be found such as swimming pool, dining rooms etc. A small plan set discretely in the foyer would have helped.
Also in the bedroom, although there was a very good television, all of the BBC/ITV services were unavailable and when we asked at the desk why, they said it was a satellite problem and also there was no indication what programmes were available and what the channel numbers were. When we eventually found them the few English channels that were available were OK.
There was another annoyance, the hotel had two restaurants, one a buffet restaurant and the other an Al a carte. Although we were B&B only we thought we would dine at the the Al a Carte restaurant on our last evening only to be told that as we were B&B we couldn't, even though we said we didn't expect to get a free meal and would obviously pay for our food. We were told that unlike EVERY other 4 star hotels we have been to the Al a carte was for half board guests only, we were told this in a rather snooty manner by the desk clerk.
The room we were given was on the 3rd floor and only got a little sun first thing in the morning and the room had air con on when we arrived and was absolutely freezing, by this time we were beginning to feel like third class citizens.
The other annoyance was access to the hotel front and back. You got to the back entrance via a lift that was hidden away, again with no direction or instruction given how to get out or return by the back gate. It turned out that there was a small button you pushed to get out and on return you put your key card into a slot and pressed a buzzer and asked to be let in, again no instructions were on hand to help the new guests. The front of the hotel is a nightmare for pedestrians especially ones like me who have walking problems as the access appears to be for vehicles only. A small exit for pedestrians would be very helpfull AND a lot safer. To return via the back access you had to be back before 10pm as the gate closed then so if you were dining out you had a long climb and walk up to the front of the hotel.
Now for the good points, the breakfasts were superb, the majority of the staff war very helpful and nice, the bar was good and, for a 4 star not that expensive, it also had nightly entertainment
The pool, when we found it, was average and we thought quite small for a 4 star and, as usual, it was full almost from sunrise, the pool bar was, again, ok but not as good as some 4 stars we have stayed at. The room was clean and tidy but the storage space a bit small, only three drawers and 11 coat hangers and the wardrobe drop was very small. We were there for only three days and had brought a minimal of clothes with us but goodness know how people who were there for two weeks and ladies with maxi dresses managed. There was a kettle with milk, sugar, coffee and Spanish style tea bags in the room as well as a safe and a mini bar both of which had to be paid for. We decided to buy a botlle of wine from the supermarket across the road as the prices from the mini bar were very expensive. We stayed at this hotel 37 years ago before Medplaya took it over and refurbished it and we had a much better time then. However all in all, despite our many and varied complaints, we had a good three days break.

Dear Evenged,

Thank you for reviewing Hotel Riviera. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your 3 weeks holiday despite some aspects of the hotel which were not to your liking. Regarding the dinner in the À la carte restaurant, usually it is available for the guests on half board basis and at the moment it is not possible to pay for a dinner in the Araucaria restaurant as it is an exclusive service for guests who have chosen half board. With regard to mentioned points, we take them into consideration as well as the comments we receive from all our guests.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your opinion and we hope you had an enjoyable time in Benalmádena Costa.

Kind regards,
