“Great Resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

I have recently returned from a 10 night stay with my two children aged 14 and 10 both who had a great time. The hotel was always kept clean and staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a pool/seaview room which was lovely and spacious. We did use the beach club a couple of times which was nice but I do agree with other people in that I feel the ring hire should be included and not incur a 6 Euro charge. The hotels location was fine for us as you could get a bus from right outside the hotel to both Fuengirola and Torremolinos for 1.65 euros each. Food was as expected for a spanish hotel and the two A La Carte restaurants were really nice and definitely worth a visit. Our only disappointment was with the swimming pools, the outdoor pools were lovely with plenty of shallow areas for the younger children but they closed at 6pm which seemed far too early and the indoor pool could not be used by children in the afternoon.

Room Tip: It is worth paying the extra for a pool/seaview room.

So disappointed will never travel with first choice ever again.
Spending £7000 I did expect my two children to have beds not an extremely uncomfortable sofa and camp bed. Black out blinds only covered half the window so children woke very early.
The food was just awful! Just could not believe what the hotel served every evening.
Never again!!!!!!!

We have just returned from two weeks at the holiday village, not only would i never want to return again, i could not recommend it to anyone and very unlikely to ever book anything with First Choice again.

We are a family of six that because of the ages of our eldest two children 12 &13 were forced to purchase two rooms. This resulted in an incredibly expensive holiday. As a result our expectations were high which led to disappointment as soon as we arrived.

The hotel is very dated. Having stayed in many hotels around the world for First Choice to refer to this as 4* is a joke. It would probably get away with 3* because of the facilities but everything is outdated and needs a complete refurbishment.

Let me start with the little things that are infuriating.

-Having paid a huge sum of money we were asked to pay €43 to have a safe. We have stayed in many hotels around the world and never been asked to pay for a safe.
-To pay a further €43 for a late checkout. When we booked with First Choice our only option was a flight at 9.30 pm so surely we should be able to keep our room later than standard checkout?
-Having to pay €6 a day +€14 deposit to use the ringos on the two water slides. With 4 kids this adds up.

Now the big things:

- Food:

When you come on holiday you expect to be able to eat better than at home. Whilst there are plenty of weird and wonderful things (deep fried brussel sprouts) they are all hideously overcooked and cheap. In fact everything on offer is the cheapest it can possible be resulting in very very poor quality.

If you are happy with the poorest quality chicken nuggets, pizza and burgers / sausages with the lowest meat quality and quantity ever then lunch time at the pool bar is the place for you.

Accommodation:

Basic, dated and not very clean. Outside on the balcony the cheapest quality plastic furniture you can find. In fact everything is cheap about this place.

The only positives i can find about this place is the First Choice staff who are left their to pick up the pieces. Whilst i didn't always enjoy the entertainment i can't dismiss the effort that all the entertainment team and kid's teams put into doing their jobs. Unfortunately they are let down by the hotel at every level. I could never recommend this holiday or location to anyone. First Choice will struggle to be 'The Home of All Inclusive' if they continue to use this location.

just returned from a one week break at the holiday village Costa Del Sol...... firstly, I was expecting worse so was pleasantly suprised...BUT.....why advertise that the beach club is part of it when it clearly isn't, yes you get free entry, yes one of the restaurants that we use is over there but a ten minute walk to use the facility and no where near the hotel puts you off going, also, if you don't treck over there for lunch you have the rubbish snack bar... Chips & nuggets!!!!.... Mmmmmmmm NOT....
not the first holiday village we have been to but it will be the last, upon arrival , whilst checking in the first choice rep sat on her bum whilst we where stood waiting and didn't bother to come over to check all was ok.... Not good, once in the room, we discovered we where overlooking the bins, very noisy and very smelly, spoke to rep and she said it was because we didn't pay upgrade.... Not happy.... Did get moved eventually but took three days. will be taking this up will first choice as it should say in brochure tha if you don't upgrade you either overlook the service areas or the train track!!!
FOOD.... Not brilliant but not un edible.. What does put you off are the greedy British piling there plates up when they are clearly not gong to eat it... .. Chavvy attitude of ... "Kids were all inclusive....fill yer plates up".... Awful!!!
the hotel is reasonably clean but just needs a total re vamp!!
the entertainment team do work very hard but it's all abit stage school....and some of them think they are something they clearly aren't ........can't be that good as the seating area around the stage on a night is half empty!! ....Paige is the best keeping everyone entertained!!!
Such a shame about this hotel as this area of Spain is lovely... W ventured out and love the area so much we will return but sadly not to this hotel.....
had a nice week but would not return or reccomend... Very dated, needs a total renovation.... Lets the company down!!!

Hotel a little 70s and faded. Closer to Fuengirola than Benalmadena in truth, a 10 eauro taxi fare to the one and 15 to the other.

Lots for the kids to do, which they enjoyed, entertainment for the adults pretty awful though, but I guess thats par for the course.

Soccer academy was very so so. Only one coach on day 1. On the tournament day 5 and 6 year olds thrown in against 16 year olds.

Food - brekky was pretty good, omelets nice as long as tou got down there by 830 or so, any later and tou were looking at a 20 minute queue. Other meals very blah... ended up taxiing out to the resorts where there are many great options.

Booze - ok-ish. On the beer front lager only, with chemical aftertaste. Red wine was vile. Cocktails limited on the all inclusive package. But decent.

Just returned from a week at the HV Benalmadena (3 adults and 4 kids ranging from 9 months to 14) and have to say we had an excellent week in the sun.

The hotel itself is a bit isolated and not great if you like to walk into a resort and browse the shops but this didn't bother us at all. It's only a short cab ride away anyway if you do want to go into Benalmadena or Fuengirola. It's only a short hop from Malaga airport so 25mins and you're there. Check in was quick and easy and we got 2 rooms next to each other as requested although we didn't have a sea view. No issue with that though and the view of the mountains was pleasant enough and the train that goes past is very quiet!

The hotel pool and those across the road at the waterpark are absolutely brilliant! The best part of the hotel experience by a mile. We spent most of the time at the waterpark as the kids loved it and despite the moans on here, it really is only a 5 minute walk. Sunbeds went quite quickly at the main hotel pool but as the water park doesn't open til 10am it was easy to get a decent spot under an umbrella which was very necessary as the weather was baking hot! Loads of different pools, some colder than others and plenty to keep the kids occupied all day. Really couldn't fault it at all!!

Food was a big concern for me after reading mixed reviews, however we thought the food on the whole was pretty good. Breakfast was excellent and lunch at the Beach Club was very good. I only struggled on one evening to put a decent plate of food together and this was the Sunday and mainly due to them serving up roast beef and Yorkshire pudding which is the last thing I want in 35degree heat!! Generally the fish and meat on the grill was very nice, soups were delicious, salads were crisp and fresh and the pizza, hot dogs, burgers and chips for the kids were also good. Desserts were a little repetitive but they had plenty of choice every day and there's only so much you can eat.

Only had lunch around the pool on the first day we arrived and whilst the hot dog was nice, there wasn't much choice and it looked a pretty poor offering to be honest.

We did eat in the Italian restaurant one evening and whilst it was nice to have waitress service one day instead of buffet, the food did taste a bit microwaved!

Drinks were ok, soft drinks always available to help yourself and the beers were ice cold and refreshing. The gin and tonics in the evening were a bit hit and miss but more hit than miss and you could always go up and get another one!

So on to the entertainment. Around the pool in the day there are quizzes and all sorts going on but we mainly went to the waterpark so we missed most of it. From what I saw of it, it seemed quite good fun.

The entertainment team were really good and clearly worked their socks off day and night. The adult entertainment was ok although the singing was pretty ropey but take it for what it is. Bingo every night as well if you're into that.

Kids entertainment was a big disappointment for me. They had an hour or so before the adult entertainment and our kids would have loved to have been dancing for the entire time but instead ended up watching games on stage and doing the odd dance. Kids do not want to watch other kids doing a game on stage or entertainers talking to Russell the Brussel!!!! When they did the I Five Live dance or the Chocolate dance then it was great but there just wasn't enough of it and this was the biggest let down for me. It says something when kids. instead of being by the stage would rather queue for 45mins for the trampolines!!!

So on the whole it was a cracking week and we were all gutted to leave. I could have easily done another week at the HV Benalmadena. It's a decent hotel, good facilities and the waterpark is brilliant but the hotel could do with a few tweaks. I would definitely recommend it to anyone with kids and the price of the holiday wasn't excessive but I would probably try the HV in Menorca or Majorca rather than go back to this one!

Room Tip: We didn't have a pool view so were overlooking the mountains and the train line but this was ple...

This was our first time at a holiday village, we travelled with friends who had already been to Lanzorote and Portugal and had good times there. I was a little bit concerned about reviews I had read before about the hotel before travelling. These reviews were put to rest from day one. We found the staff helpful and polite upon arrival and this continued through the holiday. The rooms were spacious and always kept clean, we were on the back of the hotel facing the rail line, this was not a problem as the trains are electric so there was no real noise,l the room was very quite. I am quite a fussy eater but had no problems with the food, there was always a wide variety of choice. The pools are great with plenty of day time activities, one downfall you do need to be early for sunbeds but is this ever any different at other hotels. There were 3 children in our party two 13 year olds and one 10 year old they had a great time and were always entertained whether it was by the reps or finding things to do their selves . The water park connected to the hotel is reasonable, one problem I found is that you have to pay 6 euros to hire a ring for the day, I do not agree with this as I believe it should be included in the all inclusive package, we were happy enough to stay mainly around the hotel pool but if your children preferred the water park it could work out quite costly. The night time entertainment was reasonable the reps do work hard. As for the reps they were great always happy, polite and helpful. Location of the hotel is not the best we spent quite a lot on taxis, approx. 30 euros there and back to Belamandena and the water park however there is a bus stop outside the hotel. Belamandena harbour is well worth a visit, Amigos restaurant is excellent but I would advise you to give the Ice bar a miss this was a real rip off. In all a great holiday and a shame to be back.
Best wishes to all the staff

Richard, Kathryn and Meg
