Not like any other hotel I've seen looks more like a village, has a centre where you can congregate and get food and drinks, free direct access to the Portaventura theme park at any time.
Rooms are well presented with key card entry system which doubles as your entry card to the theme park.
Food in the half board restaurants is excellent and plentiful, kids are well looked after food-wise and have theme park characters around for photographs.

We have just returned from a week at the Portaventura hotel. Our family consisted of my husband, myself and our 3 children ages 8, 6 and 2. It meant we had 2 rooms at the hotel but they were linked rooms, with one having 2 double beds and the other a very large bed. Both rooms had ensuite bathroom, safe and a fridge. Both were also furnished to a high standard and we had daily maid service. Our rooms were at the furthest point away from the entrance to the park (which the hotel has its own entrance), however even our 2 year old managed this walk and further into the park so not a vast distance. If you like going everywhere by car and not walking do not go to the theme park as it does involve a lot of walking, but again our 2 year old managed fine with periods of rest in his pushchair. The park is fantastic and i would highly recommend it, we were all entertained daily and didnt get chance to get bored! The only downside i would have to say is that the evening meal is from 7pm and we would prefer to have the choice to dine earlier. However, breakfast and the evening meal are both buffet style and always to a high standard. My daughter and myself are both fussy eaters and we ate to we burst! It would have been nice to have had a drinks package with the holiday but that is just an opinion and not a necessity. We did feel that the thomson reps could have given us more useful information instead of the rehearsed sales welcome pitch - such as there was a heated small pool at the other side of the hotel and certain advertised features werent available due to us still being out of season - such as dine around service in park itself but that didnt spoil our enjoyment. The hotel grounds are stunning and sesame street characters walk around at meal times. There is a small play area onsite for the children but for some reason it was locked during our stay, we did query with the Thomson rep who didnt know why and said we should ask guest services, but to be fair we would have only used it to occupy the kids for a short period of time at the start and end of the day. As for check in times - we arrived midday and was allowed access to one of our rooms straight way and was told the other room would be available at 3pm. However, we had emailed the hotel directly before our stay to advise them that our son had medical needs which required storing medication in a fridge, so i would advise if you do have additional needs to email the hotel before your stay.

Room Tip: If you have additional needs - email the hotel beforehand to ensure they assist you the best way the...

We have just returned from a weeks half board and had a fantastic time. We had connecting rooms which have recently refurbished and of a good standard. The TV has a couple of English channels on but if one of the other stations is showing an English/US show if you press the audio button on the remote a couple of times it changes to English due to being fed by a satellite feed.

We stopped at the furthest reach from the centre and if anybody feels that the distance is too far they obviously need some more exercise! Our room was right by the pool and we never had any problems getting a sun bed though at this time of year the pool was freezing.

One thing lacking in the room is a kettle and tea/coffee which surely in this day and age should be standard? there is a shop on site but the range is limited and I would suggest walking down the road for 10 minutes to find one of the many small more reasonably priced items e.g. a 5 litre bottle of water for less than a euro.

We ate both breakfast and dinner in the hotel at the buffet for which there was a wide varied choice for the whole week, again those that complain too much must be particularly fussy. i would concur that some foods could do with being a bit warmer though.

As you can imagine we stayed here due to the access to the park and this is a fantastic feature to be able to come and go as you please every day with children of 8,7 & 2 we were never bored.

My only criticism is the high cost of food and drink but as a hotel attached to a theme park this is to be expected but as mentioned a quick trip down the shops can soon stock you up.

Room Tip: room 1099 is furthest away from park entrance and facilities but is quiet and next to the pool and o...

We had previously stayed at the El Paso Hotel, part of the same resort, but decided to stay at this one due to the proximity to Portaventura Park. Fantastic location, rooms were large, very clean with satellite TV (only BBC channels in English). There is free wi-fi in every room, the gym is well equipt with a fanstastic, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room just outside. The food was of a good quality, not loads of variety but we used our dine around benefit 5 nights out of 7 and had fantastic meals at the Port Regatta restaurant. We did have some noise issues in our room and were moved immediately to a much larger and luch quieter room, with the help of the bell boy (the best service in a hotel i have ever had in dealing with a complaint). Tarragonna is about 15mins away by taxi if you get fed up of the resort, the parc central shopping center is well worth a visit, as is the archaeology museum, amphitheatre, circus and pretori. Guest services are an excellent facility, they can help with anything including arranging tours, taxis etc. All round an excellent holiday, but just be prepared that no matter what time you arrive your room will not be ready until 3pm. We knew this and enjoyed our day at the park until it was ready as long as you are prepared in terms of clothing etc you should be fine. There are changing and shower facilities available in the gym.

Room Tip: Top level rooms have lovely sloping ceilings and a lot more height.

I have recently returned from a week at Hotel Portaventura. Overall is was pretty good, it is excellent access to the park.

I was a little disappointed the water park wasn't open as told this opens in May, however it was 27th May that is actually opens. The hotel's pools were also freezing that no one could really get in them.

The food - Breakfast was a buffet style and everything you could think off and by far the best meal. Then the evening was a buffet which again had a good choice but was cold!! You could swap your evening buffet meal for one of the other restaurants which we did and they were both nice meals. I think it works out that you get 21 euro's per adult and 10.50 euro's for a child and then you pay the remainder of the bill.
However one of the restaurants that you could swap was not open yet, which was again disappointing!!
You get given time slots for your breakfast which can be quite restrictive as you are on holiday and don't always know what time you are going to get up!! However with a small child this didn't really prove to cause us to many problems.

The 'american' style food wasn't good in the park, so i would therefore stick to the Spanish food as that was very good!!

The hotel itself wasn't particular helpful, they are all Spanish speaking which was ok for us as my husband is half spanish but for others it would prove to be difficult to communicate. We arrived at 10.30 am with my 2 year old daughter and was unable to check in until 3.00 which was not particulary great.
The day we checked out - we had to at 7.00am due to flights and there was nothing open to get a even a coffee....... so we had to wait until about 9am until we had checked in to get a drink and something to eat. However we saw other travellers had a packed breakfast from their hotel but our's refused this!!!!

The rooms were quite spacious, and kept clean. We had 2 double beds however later found out we could of had a camp style bed for our daughter which would have been better, rather than 2 beds pushed together!!

There is a cash point on site which is useful and you can hire towels for 15 euros which is a refundable deposit and you can trade the towels in daily for fresh ones.
There is a gym, sauna etc, which looked nice and a spa. I did have a massage which was ok, nothing special!!

Salou is worth a visit it is about 15 minute walk and i would recommend going into Salou for any supermarket bits (you do have a fridge in your room) as it is quite cheap and there are many supermarkets to chose from.
The beach is ok, sunbed hire is 4 euro's all day and there are a few nice restaurants to chose from.

Bike hire - this was about 18 euros for 2 bikes and a baby seat for 2 hours.
Car Hire - worked out about £46 for 24 hours and there are about 3 in a row to chose from so get prices from all of them as they tend to do it cheaper than the next!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are the same apart from the Woody rooms which i was unable to upgrade too!!!

Cannot say I was overly impressed with Hotel Portaventura but was greart for the themepark. Dining is a cattle market and poor quality, much prefered eating in the park or in Salou its self. Plenty to do around the hotel for the family.
