“a great find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2013

we arrive at the hotel vil-a romana on the Monday 21st of October .we were welcomed by a friendly woman at the desk and even checking is not till three o clock and we had arrived at one our room was ready to go.overall this hotel was great from the rooms which were clean and spacious and had a balcony to sit out in the evenings. The location of the hotel was brilliant if you like a quiet area of salou. The best thing was the food wow wow wow you can go down for dinner and get all you can eat for 14 euros each and a bottle of wine for 6.50 and the selections of starters, mains sides and desserts(chocolate brownies are to die for)overall recommend this hotel as all facilities were very good and location is prime for that quiet nights sleep.

Stayed from 24 May to 31 May (6th Visit)

Reception:
As this is a large hotel the receptionists are kept busy. Emma is English and she and her colleagues offer an efficient and friendly service. Our check in on Friday 24 May was trouble free. All guests are required to pay the local tourist tax of 1 euro each per day which means that a couple have to pay 14 euro for a week's stay. In my opinion travel firms such as Thomsons etc should include this in the holiday price. The safety deposit box costs 23 euro per week.

Rooms
Our room was ready for our arrival. Both the bedroom and the bathroom reflected the high standard of cleaning which we have come to expect in this hotel. There is a small fridge for which there is no charge and a Samsung flat screen TV. There is a slide robe type wardrobe which offers adequate space for clothes and other items. The bathroom is supplied with the usual toiletries and has a hair drier which is not all that powerful. One of the light bulbs fused one evening after we returned from dinner. It was replaced within ten minutes from the time I reported it. Full marks.

Dining Room
Since this hotel can cater for 1200 guests the dining area is large. There were over 900 people staying during our week and we never experienced overcrowding or had lengthy queues. Antonio who checks guests in for dinner needs to loosen up and smile a bit more. The waitresses are friendly especially if you make an effort to speak to them. As well as setting and clearing tables they take orders for drinks which are paid on exit from the dining room. There is a wide selection of food for and special mention must be made of Henri who makes excellent omelettes and fries the eggs. We always go to dinner after 7.30 pm which means that the young families have finished by the time we go in. My advice is to walk around to see what is on offer. There is an excellent salad bar, a choice of two soups, a hot food self service section and a wide selection of sweets. There is show cooking at the chefs' counter. In addition to a wide variety of fish the week saw duck, beef, pork and chicken. In my opinion I would not give the main course full marks. The chefs would need to learn how to cook vegetables properly. Also Ohtels should review their meat contract. Simply not good enough for a 4 star hotel.

Pool and Public Areas
The pool and public areas are well maintained. It's such a pity about the sad people who creep out to the pool in the early morning to perform the towel ritual and dance. There are always plenty of sun beds. It makes one angry to see sun beds unused for hours booked with sad peoples' towels. And don't blame the continentals as the Brits are the worst offenders.

Thomson Team
Alex gave the welcome presentation which was one of the best I have ever heard. Unlike some garbled offering I've experienced in previous years Alex was clear and concise and displayed good local knowledge. He gave the necessary information about excursions in a manner that would encourage participation. He wasn't pushy. He was ably assisted by Naomi.

Bus Plana
Would recommend the highly efficient local bus service which can take you from Salou to Cambrils, La Pineda, Reus and Tarragona all for 1.90 euro per single journey or 1.14 euro using a 10 journey bus card.

Conclusion
The Vil La Romana is fortunate in having a great staff who take pride in their work. The hotel is well maintained and is in a good location not more than 10 minutes walk from the beach and places of entertainment. As for the hotel entertainment it's simply a matter of what turns you on. The alternative is only a short walk away.

Would I return? Probably.

Room Tip: Pool view rooms get afternoon sun.

This is a good hotel, only let down was as others have said was the quality of the towels this year, having been only a year ago there was a remarkable difference. Also some of the dining room staff needed a personality transplant.I realise it is the end of the season and people get tierd but a smile costs nothing. The location of the hotel is great and the theme park only a short walk away is a must to visit. We had a small mishap with the wardrope door on arrivel, it fell off!!!! Reported it and was fixed within 3 hours.

Room Tip: the front of the hotel has great views of the theme park.

We was'nt booked in to this hotel but we was'nt dissapointed at all. All the staff especially on reception and the cleaners were very helpful, polite and friendly. The rooms were cleaned every day. Loads of hot water.
The food was plentiful and was very good. The plates were hot, which i do like, and there was loads of different things to chose from.
We are not breakfast people but did like the toasties.
The pool was cleaned every day and the pool area was always tidy.
Its far enough from the centre but within easy reach by walking but there is a bus stop right outside the hotel and the land train stops there as well.
The only 3 things i didnt like was there was chips put out for breakfast, "hot" drinks were by vending machines which they was'nt and still people putting towels on sun beds.
All in all a great hotel.

Slightly out dated rooms and low quality towels do not bother us as long as the rooms are clean, and my word do those maids deserve every euro! The food of an evening is nice with good choice and quality , (a bit under par with best oasis park 3* up the road) who had the most fantastic food ive ever had in spain full salmons themed nights ect The breakfasts use very cheap meats ect but again when in Spain things are different .The restaurant is chaos of an evening, being ordered where to sit is annoying especially when in a large group rather makes it a little like a cafe not a 4* hotel .Imagine the height of season. The things that let this hotel down could be and should be easily rectified with very little effort,a swap box should be introduced and encouraged for buckets, spades, magazines ect its a brilliant idea that we have seen in other hotels and benefits everyone . If on your arrival day you miss your evening meal than surely its only courteous to supply one on the last day if leaving late on .I am sure the positives would out way the negatives on this issue .The only thing that shocked and disappointed us was the day my sister lost her cash card ,she asked the reception if they could google the correct number to contact her bank her mobile was flat and she was told the public phone was to cost 1 euro a minute it was not really a case of the money but knowing the difficulties that can be had getting in touch with a land line let alone an 0845 number from Spain can be .But they would not allow her to use the hotel phone ,I would like to think if a tourist was in the UK and in the same situation we would be happy to help and offer the use of a phone not just assistance at the call box as it was clear she was very distressed and it was a genuine problem it did take a long time to get through even with the help of a spanish guy! So all in all a fine hotel but a bit to go before its truly worthy of 4*

Dear guest,

Thank you for all f your comments.

I would like to point out that I remember the situation and your sister was not sure where she had placed it and the receptionist recommender for her to make sure before making the phone call. Also, I’m afraid that we are not allowed to make external phone calls for customers especially to foreign countries. It is company policy.

I would like to thank you again for dedicating the time to write to us.

Regards.

Having just returned from this hotel on a last minute holiday. Not having been to mainland Spain before, my husband and I was pleasantly surprised at this hotel, although most of the remarks made by km157x we agreed with i.e., the meals very repetitive we also thought it was due to being the end of season. Our room was very nice, it overlooked the road and was quite quiet apart from the rubbish being put out from the kitchen below. One small criticism was that you could get no BBC on our WIFI and was told by our reps, that this hotel blocked BBC. It seems that they want British money from people staying, but no to BBC. Weather was very good for October and although it took about 10mins walk to the beach, the Land train was very good as it was 3 euros for a good round trip of the area. I think that the hotel was mainly geared up for family parties, with Port Adventura close by, but not for us. The evening music was very loud, and we were glad of the Sports Bar for a quiet drink.

Room Tip: If you want quiet ask for a room overlooking road instead of the pool area.

We are currently here now, we emailed before our arrival with requests to which we received a reply and our requests were certainly granted. Food of a very high standard, yes you do have to buy drinks with your evening meal as it's not all inclusive. Pool a bit cold but hey it's nearly November, weather fantastic 28° today forecast 33° for tomorrow (27 Oct) rooms adequate for 3 bit small for 4 but we on holiday to enjoy ourselves not sit in a room. Hotel very clean and all staff nice, not encountered any problems at all. Pool was generally clean with a few leaves in it but they were round the side of the pool. Hotel busy but still able to get sunbeds at any tune of the day. Air con good. Huge lobby with plenty comfy seats and 2 huge bar areas for night. Breakfast served untill 11am not bad if you like a lie in. Beds are comfy but only 1 pillow had to ask for more and git them immediately. Free WiFi all over the hotel just get a code from reception. Hotel is about a 10-15 min walk to the beach, and prob 10 min to porta ventura. Overall a fab hotel with hard working staff, good food and a comfy environment will defiantly return!!!! Highly recommended and we expect high standards, we are very fussy when choosing hotels believe me.
