Apartamentos Portofino y Sorrento
Reviewed 24 September 2013

Stayed August 10th to 17th with 2 young kids. In Portofino Apmts and apartment was basic but clean and spacious with decent furniture. Apartment complex was busy when we were there but no noise at night time as mostly full of families. Great location near to beach and restaurants shops etc. For what we paid was real value for money and would recommend. No sign when we were there of horror stories that have happened to others even though it was peak season. 2 great pools that the apartments have that were well used by us and others. Would recommend Mammia Mia 20 yds down the road as one of the best Italian restaurants I've been in, including in Italy. Service generally good but need to be chased if anything's wrong, still don't think we ever got a bedroom lightbulb replaced!

Last time at this apartment was 13 years ago and was with some trepidation that this trip would not live up to expectations given some recent reviews.
However very surprised that Portafino at least has had a makeover and remodel. Could not comment upon the Sorrento part as we did not enter the building but did find its pool area very pleasant.
Back to the Portafino, reception staff very competent and helpful, the room safe although was ok at first but did not work a little later. The reception staff worked with the contract locksmith even on a Saturday and we were soon back in business. Sally who we know from previous apartments was especially good with an excellent command of English.
The lounge/day room was very large indeed but would benefit with the inclusion of additional furniture in the lounge such as a sideboard or similar, not only as a function but to fill the large space.
Bed comfortable, sheets changed twice, towels changed every other day. No housekeeping though.
Kitchen well appointed although not used apart from the efficient refrigerator, electric kettle and two cups.
The view from our huge 4th floor terrace over the bay was attractive, the sunsets especially.
The fantastic beach not even a stones throw away with warm mediterranean was a nice departure from poolside. The nearby Watering Hole bar provides drink, food and for only 3 euros a day the use of a lovely pool and sunbeds.

Room Tip: 4th floor and upwards all face the beach and bay

We stayed here about 4 years ago and had such a lovely time in Santa Ponsa we decided to return. Money is a little tight so even though The Portofino/Sorrento are not 5 star for what you pay they are excellent value for money. The rooms are large and having a seperate kitchen and living area is a real treat in a self catering apartment. All rooms have a balcony (most with a view, more about that later!) and I could never get tired of sitting out on the balcony with a beer or wine watching Santa Ponsa's wonderful sunsets. The only problem we had was we didn't have a kettle and they didn't have one for us to hire so we had to use a coffee percolator! For a hotel that has so many visitors from the British Isles this isn't really up to scratch but for what we paid we made do for the week. Also with two pools and the beech just across the road there is plenty of choice for sun worshiping. Also we chose to come back to this hotel because its on the right side of town for us. The bars and clubs are far enough around the bay to not to cause too many problems but still in walking distance if you want a big night out. However we are out for a quieter time now adays and this side of town has the most amazing restaurants. We ate out every night and paid from 30 Euros to 80 Euros with drinks for our meals and ate everything from Italian, Indian, American to Spanish and everyone was fantastic. Like someone has said this is a budget hotel and self catering so don't expect maid service everyday but for what you pay the accommodation is amazing (I've stayed in far worse on several allocation on arrival hols) and Santa Ponsa has everything you could want from a small resort. The only niggle I had was that we booked Portofino because I'd enjoyed the views so much last time but were put in Sorrento which I didn't mind but the first apartment we were given was on the ground floor, had no view and was at a level with the pool so we were overlooked by everyone out by the pool. This room would have been great for a small family but not a couple coming to get away from it all. I knew I wasn't going to be happy here as the whole reason we had booked was the view so went straight back down to reception and asked for a different room. At first they said they didn't have anything but when pushed they offered us a different room on the 3rd floor (which we went up to check first). I've never had the nerve to ask for a different room before and even though it was given begrudgingly I was pleased I made the effort as otherwise my holiday would have been ruined. So recommend sticking up for yourself.

On arrival to the portofino apartments at 2am we were told that the apartments were fully booked and that we would have to get a taxi to the deya apartments, which are situated slap bang in the middle of the noisiest area of Santa ponsa. After reluctantly spending the rest of the night in the deya the manager (of both apartment complexes) "managed to find" us a room in the portofino which we had booked. Lots of others had the same experience whilst we were there. The manager seams to think that he is best placed to decide which apartments you should be put in when you arrive.

The portofino apartments are decent budget accommodation in a great location. Rooms very basic but big, pool area was quiet and relaxing except most of the sun loungers were broken, fitness room/gym is a token gesture with most of the equipment being broken or 25 years old and caked in rust. Location is excellent with the beach across the road and good restaurants and minimarkets very close by.

If your party is all over 16 years old prepare to probably be told you are being moved to the deya apartments for at least your first night, prehistoric attitude to customer service..

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors have great views

Just returned from a week at portofino, first when we arrived (we were a couple 30 year old) got offered a room at deya, I had read reviews previously and wasn't my kind of place so kindly said no, we got room 1203 second floor above entrance and restaurant, didn't like the apartment on first look, I'm by no means fussy I don't take pictures of cracked tiles and complain about there only being 2 cups or forks, but it didn't have a nice feel like other inexpensive places I've been, the kitchen was sticky and it had a slight damp smell didn't seem clean, clumps of fluff on the floor and the bars on the bedroom window meant it did feel a bit like a cell, no mirror apart from bathroom with no natural light, it was nice and spacious though and I really don't spend a lot of time in the apartment so was soon used to it, did ask to move at reception but were full and I said it didn't seem clean so she sent up cleaning immediately so that was good, view from balcony of road I didn't like at first but wasn't bad really I like people watching and I could still see the beach and a little sea, there's a nice Indian to the left up the street called krishna, went twice. Overall nice area, nice walk round to the square on the opposite side of the bay, nightlife is tame. Got the bus to magaluf through the day a couple times €1.60, took about 20 mins with all the stops it made, 5 mins in a taxi for €8-9. Nice place during the day, has western water park, marine land, katmandu, all worth a look although not a great deal to keep you occupied at marine land when the main shows are not on. Katmandu was good, all 4d cinema/games laser shooting roller coaster simulater, something a bit different. santa ponsa is a lovely busy but not ridiculous busy place as a good base, I loved the location of apartments as strip was not far but no noisy music you could hear and the view across the other side of the bay on an evening with all the lights on was gorgeous, enjoyed it overall.

We are a couple with 2 older teenagers and have just returned from 9 nights at the Portofino. When we arrived at Reception we were told by Charo ( the receptionist) that the hotel was full and we would have to spend our holiday at The Deia instead which is part of the same group. Having seen this on tripadvisor previously we knew that this was a bad hotel being right in the middle of the nightlife area. We said no we weren't going as we had paid for a room at the Portofino . We were told that it was not possible and then she said that it would only be for 1 night and then there would be a room in the Portofino. Reluctantly we agreed as there didn't seem to be any other option. Without going into detail about The Deia it was probably the worst hotel we have ever been to! ( no hot water, being kept awake all night and chewing gum on the bed were highlights!)
In the morning we spoke to Jose, the manager, who told us that there was a room available back at the Portofino which we could have from lunchtime. He explained that the reason we were moved to The Deia is that they put adults in there and families in the Portofino. He obviously thinks that all adults want to do is party all night! The Deia is a much cheaper hotel and this would obviously make more profit by having a cheaper room filled. He told us to go to the taxi rank 300 yards down the road with all our luggage and get a taxi and we would be reimbursed. The taxi driver had obviously done this on several occasions as she asked if we were paying or was the hotel!
During our stay at the Portofino we saw this being done by Charo (the receptionist) on 2 separate occasions. She gave exactly the same speech as she did to us, that it was for the whole holiday unless she was challenged then she changed the story to it would only be for 1 night. This seems to be company policy that if you are a group of adults( no matter how old) they will try and send you to The Deia.
On arriving at the Portofino for the 2nd time we were checked in and finally got a room on the 4th floor. On first impressions the room was OK but then noticed that the whole apartment stank of cigarette smoke, so the room obviously hadn't been cleaned properly from the previous guests.
We had to change the kettle 3 times as they didn't work and had to get a plug changed as it was burnt out and dangerous. The electrics in the whole apartment kept tripping when you put the toaster and kettle on at the same time.
We had to go to Reception and ask for toilet rolls as there weren't any in the room! We also had to get 2 more towels as there were 4 of us but only 2 towels, and also sheets for the sofa beds.
After 3 days the room had not been cleaned so we went back to Reception again to ask if the room could be cleaned. We were told that the cleaners had already cleaned our room! We said it hadn't been cleaned and no new towels or toilet roll again and they said that someone would do it later. We got new towels and toilet roll but the room still had not been cleaned. this is when we decided to look under the beds!! There was so much dust and dirt under there, the room obviously hadn't been cleaned in months. We had to keep asking for towels and cleaners but no cleaning was ever done and the bed sheets weren't changed in the whole of our stay.
Overall we were very upset and disappointed with our stay. We stay in basic hotels quite regularly and have never been disappointed as much as here with the cleaning and attitude of Charo who didn't seem interested unless she thought she could get one over on you. The other 2 receptionists were really good and helpful especially the blonde one!

Room Tip: Take toilet roll with you! Ask for 5th or 6th floor if you want a good view

This was my first time on holidays in Mallorca and I must say Portofino apartments were fantastic value for a first time trip. We stayed on the top floor and our apartment balcony over looked the beach. This was fantastic every morning with a cup of tea and breakie!
The apartment itself was spacious and well maintained so it had plenty of room for a small family if needed. With local shops literally a minute down the road all your food supplies were never a stones throw away. The staff were in my opinion so relaxed and friendly it certainly added to the attractiveness of these apartments. They are extremely helpful and have the 'nothing is too much' type attitude which is just what is needed on holiday.

I thoroughly recommend staying in these apartments.
