Apartamentos Portofino y Sorrento
Reviewed 17 June 2014

We have been to Santa Ponsa many times but always stayed near the Square at top of hill.
I wasnt sure what to expect with these apartments as reviews had been mixed, but we were pleasantly surprised. The apartment was very big, lovely large balcony and we paid for a sea view which is exactly what we received and what a view it was .. beautiful. We were on the fifth floor room 5102 and looked out over the top of the restaurant across the road from us and into the bay . couldnt ask for more. We didnt have any faults to pick with the apartment as we knew it was only rated 2 star when we booked. The beds were comfy, rooms were clean and the towels changed every couple of days and apartment swept and cleaned once that we noticed in the week. That was fine by us. The only minus we really felt was the pool areas. The sun loungers were poor and there were hardly any brollies and no covered area to sit if like me you are not a sun worshipper who wants to lie in direct sunlight all day. However, besides that the pool area seemed well kept and lovely views from there also. The beach is only over the road and down steps so really close. The buses are regular and stopped across the road to go to Palma etc or down the road at the roundabout to visit other areas. All in all the apartments are in a very good central position with plenty of restaurants and bars very close by and very friendly, helpful reception staff.

This is the 2nd time I have stayed here once with my family and this time as part of a hen party.

The hotel rooms are very spacious and clean just what we were looking for and only about a 10 minute stroll to the main strip.

The receptionist was very helpful and always greeted us with a smile.

We were the first to arrive of a party of 19. The receptionist was very friendly and we found our apartment with the minimum of difficulty. However, the signage on the hill could be clearer. The lifts are far too small to accomodate the maximum number of people 6. The apartment itself was well equipped, microwave, toaster, coffee pot and double rings. It looked like the bathroom had just been redecorated with new fittings, however, no towel rails and the toilet cluncked every 30 seconds or so-room 2506. The rest fo the bathroom did look dated and a little TLC wouldnt go wrong, but it was clean and spacious enough for 4 even although we were only 3. There are two pools but very few parasols. The pool bar is very expensive and I would avoid eating there unless you like chicken nuggetts or below par burgers. The supermarket on site is fine with hot bread every morning. Dont have breakfast in the room next to reception. Freezing cold beans, undercooked- no raw sausage. The staff seemd more concerned with carrying on their conversation then looking after their customers. The apartments are in a ideal location, not much road noise, not suitable if you have a mobility issue but a nice walk to the main strip. I would stay there again.Taxi back to the airport was 45 euros as booked by hotel reception, if we had booked sooner at the tourist shop to left of receiption it would have been 36 euros so watch out for that.

Room Tip: Corner suites are large and get the sun from early afternoon until sunset.

So i normally stay in the North of the Island in Alcudia, for the last 10 years or so. However this was a lightning break so wanted something close to the airport. The receptionist was extremely friendly and helpful and encouraged me on my basic ESPANOL!!, BUT.........
Hmmmm, ok so I booked this via on the beach dotcom for a quick cheap break.....and that is the giveaway, cheap. This apartment has 2 sites .The one at the front seems to be for the non small budget paying guests, and those on the package/small budget are moved to the rear building . Access here is via the tiniest lift to the upper ground then an extremely steep hill to the rear apartments. The rooms however are very spacious but the kitchen area is minimally stocked. Spoilt at the hotel we usually stay at , I spent a good half hour looking for the aircon thermostat, TV remote and kettle only to be told by a nearby neighbor you have to pay for it.
Returned to the reception for said items. Now if you only bought a few hundred Euros, here is the catch. Remote control for TV €20 deposit plus €2 per day rental, air con control deposit €20 plus €3 per day rental and kettle deposit €10 and €2 per day. Secondly we were not leaving until late the next evening. I asked where the left luggage may be deposited and was directed to a door to the right of reception. This was not locked. I lost count the amount of times people came in and entered this door looking for the toilet! This was not secure and ANYONE could enter, not safe at all. I therefore had a late checkout charge of €30. So i spent close to €80 in deposits and extras before even unpacking.
On returning to the room, the air con was working fine in the bedrooms, but not in the lounge area where it is most certainly needed.Several main lights were not working but this was mitigated by the ones at the bedside which sufficed. I returned again to reception for a service visit for the air con and was told no engineer on site until the following day. It then dawned on me it was national labor day and manual workers have the day off. The one thing I enjoyed about the room was the shower!! Ive been many a place with slow or limited hot water supply but here it was divine. The beds were basic and comprised of a thin mattress, single sheet and cover, no extra ones were in evidence nor were extra pillows, and yep another trip to reception beckoned. The young lady on reception was extremely helpful but these are some of the basic items I'd expect to see in the room without the need to continually chase for them.
This is a good base however if you are on a budget, but bear in mind the amount of euros needed for a deposit. If you are staying here a week it is almost €60-70 in rental charges for the basics, oh and I forgot to say , only 2 channels on the TV one Spanish the other German or forget the remote, unless of course you are Spanish or German!
Finally if the weather is bad there is very little to do. I strongly suggest you seek to hire a car and explore the Island. DO NOT use the ones either side of the apartments you only need to take a look at the cars on display and should be worried. Turn right outside the hotel and head down to the roundabout and turn left. about 200 yards on the right is a large tabac...best place to get bargain deals with the promoter, i ended up with around 3 litres of spirits and other bits to the value of €40 for the purchase of my cigarettes and cigars..Turn right at the Tabac and you will find Rosslind car hire. See my further posting about this.
Finally if you rather travel by taxi and not the tedious Message me for the number of a fantastic english speaking cab driver.
ENJOY your visit.

Room Tip: Pay extra to secure the front of the apartments not the rear.

This was a good value apartment hotel that was an ideal place to stay for a last minute Easter break. Positioned near the centre of Santa Ponca, the hotel was in an ideal position to walk to restaurants, and with the bus stop just outside should you want to go to Palma, Andratx, Palma Nova or Magalluf.
The staff were helpful on arrival and we were given the key card to our room. Not ideal for disabilities as the apartments were on a steep hill and you had to walk up a slope after going up in a lift to the base of the block. (There was also a block at the front on the road that was about 8 stories high.)
The apartment itself was basic but spacious and clean. It had a separate bedroom with two single beds, a kitchen with two electric hobs, a fridge and a coffee maker. No kettle or microwave which would have been useful. It had a nice balcony overlooking the bay and the pool which was nice as it was a quiet time of the year but I imagine may be a little noisier during the summer!
The apartment also had a tv but with no English speaking channels other than cnn.
The two pools and poolside terrace were well maintained with a bar hut and a request to only consume their drinks and food ( mostly ignored by the customers) Also there was a very handy minimarket next to the pool with prices not too expensive and selling basics including fresh bread. One of the bonuses for us was the restaurant/patisserie across the road - 'Attitude and Aptitutude'. Open 24 hours a day which was fantastic for us as we arrived with two hungry children at quarter to midnight and got a very tasty supper and pint! They also do delicious cakes and bread to take away and a nice breakfast.
Our room was cleaned twice in the week with a change of towels and we decided to let the kids have the single beds in the bedroom and we took the sofa bed which was adequate but we were glad to be back in our own bed after a week!
Santa Ponca is close to Palma and although near Magalluf and Palma Nova much more suited to families - the large lovely beach is very close to the hotel ( again just across the way) and the hotel looks out over the bay. All in all a good value for money stay with good staff and care but don't expect 5 star accommodation.

Stayed here 10th - 20th April in 1 bed Portofino apmt. Fantastic views from our 6th floor room. Apartment was basic but clean. Towels changed 3 times during our stay but no clean sheets. Toaster kettle & microwave provided in the small kitchen.Great shower & no shortage of hot water. Sofa bed not the most comfortable. Take a travel mirror - only 1 mirror in the apartment which is in the bathroom. No sun on most balconies but just a 2 minute walk across the road to the beach. Pool terraces got the sun for most of the day though we didn't use them. No WiFi but if you go across the road to the 24hr Attitude cafe bar you can get the WiFi code & it worked at certain points on our balcony. The bar did a lovely English breakfast for €3.50, or scrambled eggs & proper bacon for €2.50. Chicken baguette at lunch time was huge & good value too. Too much for us so the waiter wrapped half of it up for us to take away. Service could be very slow - seemed a bit short staffed at times but staff were lovely. €5 per day to park in hotel car park but there is a free car park just down the road on the same side behind The Watering Hole. We left car there all the time & it was fine. Took the bus into Palma €3.40 per journey. The fast bus is the 102 - worth waiting for as it only takes about 35 mins whereas the 104 also leaves from the roundabout but goes through all the resort's along the coast so took 1 hr 40! Nice & scenic but wasted a lot of time. For you cyclists, my husband hired a bike(best doing in advance on line) from Rad international based in the Bahia del Sol just up from Portofino & was very impressed with the service. He also went out on a couple of their cycling tours- the only brit - but was made very welcome. In summary, as long as you remember that it's a 2 star & priced accordingly it's a good, no frills place to stay. Location is hard to beat. Hotel staff all pleasant.

we paid and booked for a 2 bed apartment as we are a family of 5, arrived to be told there was no 2 bed so they gave us 2 one bed apartments which was impractical, i did not want to sleep in an apartment without my husband as there were people ringing our bell at night and it was unsettling, in the end i out my daughters in one single bed and my son in a bed of his own, me and my husband had a 'sofa bed' which was very uncomfortable and too short!. the kettle did not boil properly in either room the fridge did not work, my husband could not fit in the bath luckily there was a shower, the french doors leading to the balcony did not lock! quite unsettling on the 6th floor and three young children. unfortunately it rained first few days we had to pay for a remote to use the heaters! and a deposit for the tv remote which didnt work anyway! there was no entertainment as stated for the children and the pool was so cold my childrens lips went purple! luckily its located in a beautiful area we spent most of our days away from the hotel on walks when it was sunny, which the weather did get absolutely amazing! we had no towel changes or bed change in a week we were there awful...we even looked at flights to leave early! also there is no gym as stated. best places to eat are the Scottish corner and meson del cielo and balcon de maria these have indoor play areas if weather is bad

Room Tip: dont go here
