“Good value break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 September 2007

I took my parents and two teenage daughters for 5 days to this hotel, booked on the internet and hired car at airport. Hotel very easy to find in fairly quiet location but very close to beach and shops. Check in was prompt even though we arrived at 11 am our rooms were ready. We had requested quiet rooms and that is what we got - no particular view but not bothered about that. reception area can smell pretty vile but that is the only place we could smell 'the smell'. Strange really. Pool area lovely although very busy . Food by pool cheap and good choice although you don't need much when you have stuffed yourselves at breakfast. Food plentiful in restaurant with good choice for everyone.

Santa Ponsa is larger than I expected but the hotel is located in an area which suits families and couples. Nice walking out on an evening. We drove up to Soller from Andrax along the coastal road and round the mountains. Having never driven abraod before was slightly concerned but the roads are excellent and well signposted so no problem and well worth it for the views.

I have travelled all over the world and was expecting mosquitos by the bucketload after reading reviews. We saw two. take the plug in things for your room and spray on an evening and you should be fine.

All in all a really good base for our holiday. Would go again and great value for money. Don't know how our price paid compares to brochure pricing but you get what you pay for and if you are a snob you should put your hand in your pocket and go for a 5 star hotel rather than complain about a good 3 star!!

Just arrived back from Don Rey Jaime - stayed there 1st week in September. I was expecting a really bad hotel after most of the reviews I had read earlier. I was really suprised and think that it is one of the good 3* hotels in Santa Ponsa.

After a delay getting there from Birmingham the check in was prompt and the reception staff were helpful. Got allocated room 100 which is at the top of the first flight of stairs. Room was very clean and quite spacious although there were only 2 of us in the room. Room location was very noisy and on our first night there were children running up 1 flight of stairs along the landing and down the other flight of stairs at 1.30 am. Their parents were obviously in the entertainment section. Then the noise from reception at breakfast was really noisy so no chance of a lie in and we were by the cleaners cupboards - one on every floor. Thomas Cook rep commented also on the noise when she came to tell us that we could move rooms on the Monday and said she could not believe how much the noise travelled. We moved down the corridor and this was much quieter. Rooms are quite well equipped including a hairdryer, TV and a safety deposit box. Bathrooms are kept very clean towels changed everyday. Extra pillows and you will need them are available from reception and they do bring them to you quickly.

Bar area is good and yes there is a mosquito problem but that is nothing new so stock up on repellant and you should be ok. I only got 1 bite and my husband who only used a band on his wrist never got any.

Food Good and plenty of choice including fruit and cheese board and always some sort of carvery section. The resturant could do with a bit of organisation for the evening meal as a bit of a free for all for a table. We did try various times during the week but still the same. We managed to get seat in the annex section but that was a bit dark and gloomy.

Beach area was great and for 2 sunbeds and a parasol 9 euros well worth it and you had better get used to it as you will never get around the pool. Towels were on the beds as soon as the doors opened and then they were left all day with no-one on them until the afternoon when they had finished doing there own thing in the day even though it states no reserving sunbeds. I counted 20 people at 8.00 oclock one morning queing up and it did not open until 8.30.

Santa Ponsa resort was quiet and very family orientated but we had one overcast day and you could see people just walking round and not knowing what to do with themselvesand the Don Rey Jaime was a very good hotel for a 3* I am not sure what people want but if they have a problem speak to their rep or the reception staff and I personally found that they were very helpful when I moved rooms and needed extra pillows.

GIVE A GO WITH AN OPEN MIND AND REMEMBER IF YOU DONT LIKE IT COMPLAIN IF THEY DONT KNOW IT IS PROBLEM THEY CAN'T SOLVE IT.

Just returrned from a week at the Rey Don Jaime. We were a bit apprehensive having read some of the reviews before our visit but were pleasantly surprised by the hotel and the resort of Santa Ponsa. Yes there is a smell, which you will notice when you get of the bus and the reception area also has its own stink! You soon forget about it ir just get used to it - we may have been lucky with the wind direction when we were there as it did not bother us. Saying that we spent most days on the beach or at the 'watering hole' a fab bar close to the beach with a pool which is certainly a lot less crowded than at the hotel and well worth the 3 euros a day for the use of it plus sun beds etc. Also drinks & food here is cheaper than at the hotel and the food is pretty good.

As for the hotel:
The reception area is good, promt check in. Don't expect smiles from the reception staff but they seem to be good at what they are doing and no problem with extra room keys etc. There is a table between the reception and the bar where people leave all sorts of things - books, magazines, sun cream, shampoo, nappies, lilos, buckets & spades etc. This is a fab idea and we borrowed things on occasions and left anything we had finished with or didn't need at the end of the holiday. There are also vending machines in the hotel which sell all sorts of things......

Bar: Drinks are expensive - similar to at home. Staff are not very friendly or chatty. Beware of the sangria as I don't think it has any (or a tiny bit) of alcohol in it although it does make a refreshing drink!

Restaurant: Ok the food is not fantastic but there is always plenty of choice however most of it does taste the same and the quality of meat (in particular chicken) is not that great. Cakes are fantastic and fresh fruit, salad, bread etc so you will never go hungry! Plates are small but you can go back as many times as you like. People who have wrritten reviews about not being able to find a clean table must have been at a different hotel as we were there when full capacity and the service in the restaurant could not have been better - always cleaning tables, taking plates away, drinks orders and replenishing food in the buffet. WE also had extra fuss as we had our one year old daughter with us who got sung to every morning and evening by the waitresses - they kept her entertained for us!

Pool: The pool itself is nice but the area round it is awful - so cramped with sun beds you cannot move or even walk to the pool without tripping over someone! Also you would not be able to relax in the sun as constant stream of people coming past. This is why we went elsewhere during the day - the beach is great but we found it was too hot on there with a baby.

Rooms: As you would expect with a 3* hotel nothing exciting but it's a bed to sleep in and the bathroom (although very small) was clean and served it's purpose. I never had a problem with the shower going from hot to cold, but my husband did so maybe it depends on what temp you have it on trial and error i guess!

Mozzies - no worse than what you would expect - You do see them a bit but nothing on the scale i was expecting and only came away with 2 bites

Evening entertainment: Mini disco for the kids at 8.30 which they all seemed to enjoy - playing games etc. Then the dreaded BINGO BONGO - well the first night you join in thinking it is quite fun but unless you are a winner it does get irritating - perfect time for a walk around the resort before the main entertainment starts at 10.30ish! We saw a few tribute bands - four tops, kool and the gang, queen, tina turner. Good standard of entertainment better than most hotels we have stayed at. A couple of cheesy nights too with the hotel entertainnment staff attempting a mime caberet which was good and Miss Hotel which was also very funny, thanks to the 'granny' in the show!

If you are in search of authentic spanish food then santa ponsa is not the place i hunted but could not find! A trip to Palma is well worth it, it is a lovely city and good tapas bars and sangria!

Would return to the Rey Don Jaime for a relaxing break - although would prefer to find somewhere a bit more spanish next time!

Just returned from 2 weeks at the Rey Don Jaime, with my son (aged 10), great time at a great hotel (remeber it's a 3*),
Rooms a bit dated but fine - and not really in them much. come with a TV (BBC1+2 & ITV1), can rent fridges, irons etc.
Breakfast - fantastic, with proper english bacon (which the Spanish eat as well!!), Evening meals were very good, reasonble choice, and cooked well, only ate out at local chinese twice during the 2 weeks, and that was just to have a change.
The Hotel is within easy access (3-5min walk) to a great beach and local amenties - shops, bars, cafes etc. Great Supermarket just on the front that makes up fresh Baguettes to order at lunchtimes for 2.95 Euro.
Day time activities were great for the whole family - usual stuff, killer pool, darts, table tennis, water polo (the most physical I have ever played) etc. plus a few extra things that the entertainment team (who are fantastic) come up with, Evening entertainment also well above average.
Rest of hotel staff all good, room kept clean etc, and the Thompson Reps were always able to answer any questions.
Would defintely consider a return visit.
Took my son to the Aqua-Park & Western Park - both in Magaluf Free bus there - 7 euro Taxi back. we were there from open 10:00am to close 18:00pm on both visits

Just returned from spending a great week staying at the hotel. Overall the hotel is well equipped and a great place to stay having a central location for the beach, shops and eating places. The Thomson entertainment team are fantastic and make you feel so welcome. There are ample sunbeds but the only thing that spoils this is that there isn't enough ground space to accomodate them which results in you being packed in like 'sardines.' The majority of the British hiolidaymakers queue religiously every morning from 8.15am- 8.30am to guarantee a sunbed in the sun! All I can say to this is get yourself to the beach (a five minute stroll away) which is far more enjoyable, hassle free and well worth the 4 euros it costs to hire the sunbeds for the day. Men beware long trousers or three quarter trousers are needed to eat in the restaurant for the evening meal. You won't be allowed in wearing shorts. Also if you hire a kettle make sure you take with you your own tea, coffee, etc because you only get three tea bags and a couple of packets of sugar! One final thing is the resort of Santa Ponsa is renowned for mosquitos which we discovered after talking to the staff of the hotel after having been bitten several times. So take a plug in with you or buy one from the supermarkets in the resort.

This is a really nice hotel on entrance, rooms are quite dated though and very cramped as we had 3 beds and a cot.
Food was really good, nice variety and of high quality every night. We only ate out once away from the hotel in a chinese just for a change.
The Casa Pepe supermarket at the sea front does nice baguettes freshly made for you which is nice and cheap for lunch time and really filling.
The pool was freezing all the time, we didn't get a particularly good week, it rained twice but not for the whole day.
All in all a nice relaxing break, didn't get bothered once by mosquitos although went prepared as most of previous reviews mention them, I did see people with bites though so must just have been lucky.
Have a nice time and don't worry about the bad reviews they aren't all true.

Spent 2 weeks at the excellent Don Jaime early June. The accommodation was adequate for 3 star but the food and entertainment was really first class and I would recommend this hotel, just go prepared for the mosquito.
