We have just returned from our first visit to this island and this hotel and can summarize the whole thing with two words – NOT 5*!!! Not even close… If you have never been to a 5* hotel you might find it ok (?) but don’t think for a second that this is what a 5* should be. Even the tour operators do not rate is as 5* but only a 4+ and here is why: the hotel is dated and a re-decoration will not help - the only way to get it 5* in every sense of the word is to rip the whole place down and rebuild it from scratch + hire new staff. In the present condition with the present service it will NEVER be 5* but only an average 4* hotel at best with some 5* features and a 3* staff. And no, I am not a snobbish, spoiled diva with unreasonably high demands, but I have been to many 5* hotels before and never seen anything so far away from 5* as this hotel! So if you want a real 5* hotel go somewhere else, otherwise be ready for many disappointments.

If you wish to know more here are the details:

ARRIVAL: we called the hotel in advance with a few requests due to the fact that one of us had a few broken bones from a recent accident and did not feel well, so we wanted to check in early, if possible, and were assured that the hotel will do their best to help us. When we finally arrived at the hotel after a nearly 6 hour flight having been up since 3:00 am in the morning (night) we were told by the receptionist that our room is being cleaned right now and we have to sit down and wait for about 20 minutes. No problem! We sat down and waited. After 30 minutes I politely asked again if the room might be ready and was told that it will be… in another 20 minutes… So we kept on waiting for another 20 minutes and then another 20 and some more… (how long does it take to clean a room??). I tried to mention that my husband did not feel very well and needed to lie down somewhere but the reception staff could not care less! Instead I was given a lecture about the hotel rules etc. and during all that waiting we were NOT offered anything to drink, not even a glass of water, or asked if we wanted to get some refreshments or snacks or anything until the room is ready... NOTHING!!! They just told us to sit by the reception and wait! Had they told us from the start that it might take a while before we could get our room and suggested to store our luggage and offered us at least a glass of water or anything to make us comfortable while we wait we would have been happy, but instead we felt ignored from the very moment we stepped into the hotel. Finally, after sitting in the lobby for 1 hour and 40 minutes (!!!) we could go to our room... but don’t think they offered to help us with our luggage, not even seeing my husband pale and exausted and with his broken arm hanging in a sling... It was only after I insisted that we needed assistance with our suitcases that we got help (while other guests had to struggle getting their suitcases up the lobby stairs all by themselves). Is this really 5* service??!

THE ROOM: since we booked very late we got the only available option - a standard sea-view room. But the price was very good so we went for it. And we got what we paid for - the room was dated, not huge but comfortable, equipped with a minibar (no alcohol!), a large flat screen TV, vintage amenities from the 70’s in the bathroom but really nice slippers, bathrobes and big bath towels, large (but hard) beds, a spacious wardrobe with mirrors and a safe and a separate little hallway with an extra door, so you do not get disturbed by the noises in the corridor. The walls are very thin though, especially in the bathroom were you can hear EVERYTHING happening behind the wall and when your neighbours speak you hear every single word. Also, there is no ventilation in the bathroom whatsoever so the only way to not die from heat in there was to shower with an open bathroom door. The nice touch though is the pillow meny, even if they do come in one shape only = “sausage”. And our housekeeping lady was the best – always cheerful and smiling and happy to see us and she did make an effort to make us as comfortable as possible! But the best thing about the room was the nice balcony with truly stunning sea views and the afternoon sun (depending on the floor and location of the room). We sat on the balcony every afternoon and every evening after dinner drinking wine and watching the ocean – that was the best part of the whole stay! And we fell asleep to the sound of the ocean waves every night… Absolutely wonderful!!

THE HOTEL: The hotel itself is a typical 70’s hotel with lots of the 70’s “charm” still present, both inside and out. So if you like that you will be happy, if you don’t – well… you might try to wear really dark sunglasses so you don’t notice too much of that.
The garden area is really beautiful, well kept, spacious and definitely 5* - we loved it! There is also a nice little shop run by a very nice lady who sells almost anything you might need for your holiday. Excellent!
The sunbathing area around the pools is nice, although a bit cramped around the pool bar, but otherwise you can always find a place that suits you, including sunbeds with wonderful ocean views. I must compliment this hotel on the really nice and big pool towels and very comfortable sun beds! The pool bar on the other hand is a disappointment. Very poor service, very poor menu and it smells terribly. I wanted a fruit smoothie but the best I could get was a small glass of freshly (?) squeezed orange juice that took ages to get, tasted weird and cost 3,50 €. And no – they do not deliver it to your sunbed! So no healthy, fresh fruit drinks at this pool bar, but they do have loads of cheap alcohol or synthetic slush etc… if you like that. So I never went there again.

The pools were ok, but as dated as the rest of the hotel and they did not have a slope (disabled) access, so if you have difficulty walking and/or climbing there is no way you can get in. A shame! But you do have the sandy beach and the ocean right outside the hotel and that is what sold this hotel to us – the perfect location right on the beach! Had the hotel itself been perfect too it would have been a stay in the paradise…

THE FOOD: The food was ok but left a lot to desire, so, no matter what you do, DO NOT choose the all-inclusive option!
At breakfast you will find more or less everything, including sparkling wine, but the quality of food is very varied. E.g. while there was a huge variety of delicious bread and all kinds of fresh, dried and canned fruit they served only one brand of cheap, packed, synthetic yoghurt that tasted just awful. So no yoghurt for me… But I could order an omelet of my choice from a very unsatisfied cook who never smiles, no matter how hard you try to cheer him up. It is almost to a point where you feel very uncomfortable to approach him, but if you want the omelet you have no choice… or you can just take the ready-made scrambled eggs with all the accessories and then head straight for the outside terrace for amazing sea views to accompany your breakfast! The views are truly beautiful so you can sit there for hours and luckily for us they serve breakfast until 11am so you have plenty of time if you are late sleepers like us. Just be aware of the two elderly waiters who run the outside terrace – they are as unsatisfied as the cook, they never smile at you and when you say something to them in English they barely look at you, never reply and just go on doing what they were doing. So if you want any service from them you will have to be very patient… and wait… and then ask again and wait… or just do everything yourself. Or maybe it’s because they simply do not understand English??

Dinner: We only had dinner there once and while nothing was bad, nothing was too thrilling either and it was definitely NOT 5* food. It was rather average canteen food with equally poor service. What was really disappointing was the fact that when we asked for wine, expecting to get a suggestion about a good local wine or getting the wine list, they just asked us what colour and size we wanted??! I had no idea that whine should be ordered by colour and size!!?? So when we asked them (in English) if they could suggest a good wine or at least give us the wine list the waiter got almost angry, fetched the wine list and went away. Seriously, what is wrong with them??!! Finally, after talking to three waiters we managed to get a bottle of nice wine and accompanied by the beautiful live piano music the rest of the dinner felt quite ok (but we knew we would never dine there again). Luckily, there are other restaurants with delicious food and truly excellent service in the neighbourhood, e.g. “Anno Domini” in the San Augustine shopping centre (probably the best service we ever had in a restaurant!) or “Balcon de San Augstine” further up the beach where you can have wonderful dinner with stunning sea views (as well as kisses and hugs from the waiter before you leave!).

THE SERVICE: As mentioned above – barely 3* and that is me being generous since we have had a 1000 times better service at simple 3* hotels! And at check-out the receptionist almost lost my credit card! She just took it and went away and never gave it back to me. And when I asked for it she insisted she did not have it and that she had given it back to me (which she had not!). Finally she did find it – in another tourist’s wallet!! Thank God for that…
But what struck us the most was that the staff members never smile and they all seem unsatisfied, stressed and unhappy to be there! Well, all but 2 that is… I can do without many things and I don’t need luxury or gourmet food or special treatment every time I travel and it’s ok if the hotel doesn’t have money for new wallpaper etc. – I can stay in a dated room too… as long as I get good service and the staff is happy to see me! A smile does not cost anything but it makes all the difference in the world! Sadly, the staff of this hotel doesn’t know that…

To summarize the whole thing we can say that if you do choose to go there then go with no expectations of any kind, try not to think of this place as a 5* hotel but rather a 3+ with a few 5* features, wear dark sunglasses, avoid the staff, dine outside, enjoy the beautiful weather and then buy some nice wine at the nearest shop to enjoy on your balcony along with the stunning sea views before you fall asleep to the sound of the ocean waves and you will be fine!

Room Tip: Do not settle for anything else than a room with a sea view and request a room high up in the left wing if you want to enjoy the afternoon sun and see the Maspalomas dunes from your balcony.

    Dear Meliá Tamarindos guest:

Thank you for writing such a complete feedback after your stay in our hotel. We deeply regret to read that your holidays among us did not fulfil your expectations. Referring to the points described and more concretely, to your arrival, we deeply apologize for the waiting time and the lack of sensibility with your husband. We aim to be warm and welcoming to all our clients and try to ensure that service runs smoothly. We would like just that you understand that we have been fully booked for the last couple of weeks and we have been trying to do our best in order to accomplish every guest wish. Regarding the room and common areas, we are aware that our hotel is in need of a refreshing, but is being kept in good condition by our Housekeeping and Technical Staff. We take very good note of your suggestions. We highly appreciate your praise about the service and friendliness of your chambermaid and we agree with you, the view from the sea-view rooms is simply stunning. We are very pleased to read that you liked the pool area, the huge garden and enjoyed the comfortable sun beds.
It is true that we do not have smoothies at the Pool Bar, but we take very good note as we think it would be a good idea to introduce it on the card. Of course, drinks can be served around the pool and delivered to sunbeds. We deeply regret to know that service at the show-cooking at breakfast as well as the waiting service on the terrace was not as friendly as it should have been. We constantly put efforts in education of our staff, trying to minimise misunderstandings and to increase communication with our guests and we will keep doing it in some departments. We sincerely hope that you will accept our apologies. We would like to thank you once again for all your comments and we truly hope to welcome you in a future. Warm regards from Gran Canaria.

We spent here 2 weeks around Christmas and New Year last year. Generally it was good, quiet and green area around. The problem there was blowing wind 10 days of 14. We still went to the pool every day, but that wasn't very cosy. After coming home I was checking on forcasts regularly comparing San Agustin to Puerto Rico and my conclusion was there is a strong pattern with easterly winds hitting San Augustin while Puerto Rico is protected.
As for holidays, the restaurants in the area offer set dinners for Christmas night, day and New Year night. As well you can have that at the hotel. We spent New Year night at the hotel having dinner first, which was beautiful but very expensive for those not on the board. Then it was a show at casino area with champagne (book in advance). The show was absolutely fantastic! Sorry, but to a strong contrast with everyday entertainment at the bar...
I must say some warm words about El Capitano, restaurant next door. A bit chaotic, but we enjoyed our dinners there very much and tried at home their receipe of whole fish baked in salt. Thank you!

    Dear Meliá Tamarindos guest:

Thank you very much for taking your precious time to post a review on Tripadvisor. We are sorry to know that you could not fully enjoy your last year holiday due to the “windy” weather. Normally, it is really delightful all year round. We are glad to read you liked our New Years Eve Dinner and Party, which we always organise in advance and putting all our hearts on it. We hope you will have the opportunity to enjoy it once again in the future. Thank you again and warm regards from Gran Canaria!

Have just returned from a short break at this hotel, and we were not disappointed. I have read some of the other recent comments, and feel they are unfair. Yes the rooms could do with an up date, however everything is spotlessly clean, something all the Melia hotels I have stayed at have in common. The pool area is designed excellently, so even when busy, you can get some privacy. It is a pity that some guests do seem to get up at 0600 to reserve sunbeds, and not get to the pool until lunch time or later, however there is a huge choice of beds, and we were always able to get 2 that suited us. We found the pool service very friendly and helpful, as was the bar service in the hotel. The food was varied, and of a good standard, even for those, like ourselves who chose to dine after 2030. Loved the veranda, attached to the restaurant, and it was great to be able to relax after a meal, and smoke if you wanted to, without having to go and stand outside. Excellent idea, as it gives choice to smokers and non smokers. Overall I would say this is a great choice. It is not 5* delux, but then neither are the costs, and for the range of facilities, the beautiful gardens and pool area, plus direct access to a beach, it can't be beaten, and we will be back.

Room Tip: Do pay extra for a sea view,it is worth it.

Returned to the Tamarindos for a 3rd visit and was greeted once again by the lovely Lorena who has time and a wonderful smile for everyone. we stayed in room 712 which has a fantastic view of the gardens, pool and the sea.
The quality of the food is still very good with a wide choice at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
My only concern was to find that the casino had closed a month before we arrived but we
could not blame the hotel due to the casino being an independently run business.
The spa at the hotel is excellent and we would definitely recommend asking for the wonderful
Lara for any of the treatments on offer.
All in all another fantastic time and we are now planning our next visit to the Tamarindos.
    Adios.

Just returned from a weeks break and had to write to explain how disappointed we were with our time spent at the Tamarindos.

Firstly the tired and dated decor and threadbare carpets need replacing.

There was enough waiters in the dining hall either at breakfast or supper and because meals were buffet style plates were never removed when finished with.

The pool area is a joke, guests appear to reserve sun beds extremely early in the morning and then do not use them until midday, there are notices around stating that if beds are not used for 45 minutes then the towels would be removed, this does not happen, surely it would be easier if the management changed the rule that sun beds could not be reserved before 10 am.

Why does the hotel allow smoking on the veranda next to the dining room,as a non smoker we did not use the veranda for our meals.

In the bar I ordered a scotch and American, and was advised by the barman that they have not served American dry or ginger ale for at least 20 years and then laughed ay my request, not 5 star service.

Nothing to do in San Agustin in the evening.

Plus point the wether was good that's about it

Try the Villa del Conde in Melanores , a proper 5 star hotel

    Dear Meliá Tamarindos guest:

Thank you for taking your time to write your experience on Tripadvisor. We are very sorry to read that your stay with us did not completely fulfil your expectations. Concerning the carpets in the stairs, we can confirm you that they are going to be replaced by next week. As described in the previous comment, we are awfully sorry if you did you experience inconveniences in our waiting service. We suffered several problems that were solved in those days. In regards to the smoking in the veranda, please we would like to explain you that, according to Spanish Law, smoking is permitted in outdoor areas. We do try our utmost to separate smokers from non-smokers but it is very difficult to totally avoid an overlap. We agree with you that San Agustin is a very relaxing area, much quieter than Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas. Actually, most of our regular and also new guests are thrilled with the hotel location. We understand that Playa del Inglés is more vibrant. Once again I wish to thank you for your valuable feedback and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the near future
