“Avoid blocks 6 & 7 due to noise. Still poor wifi”
Reviewed 24 May 2013

As always, the best feature here is the location and the pools. On the last day our flight was at 8pm - they let us leave our bags in the reception area and show in a staff shower block after returning from the beach - this was appreciated.

We've stayed here 4 times now. We got stuck in noisy block 7 again after forgetting to request blocks 1, 2 or 3 and once again were kept awake by noise from the loud beach bar (I think it's called Time Out bar) which went on past 3am on some nights.

Additionally, the rooms have rather thin walls and bedrooms are laid out so the next apartment's bed head is directly against the wall that your bed head is against (and bathroom against bathroom on other side of apt). The couple in the next room went out every night and returned at 3-4am and then proceeded to have very noisy sessions most nights - the banging bedhead and ecstatic voices/moans travelled straight through the wall - after 3 nights of this I shouted "shut up" loudly and they were more considerate after that. Bring earplugs!!

The other issue we had this year was the large cockroaches (3-4cm). One dropped down on me while I was on the loo, I found another in the saucepan! I managed to collect about 3 per day and throw them outside (a plastic cup and sheet of cardboard is a quick way to catch them without killing them). Some French friends who live in PDI say cockroaches are very common everywhere in PDI at this time of year (Apr/May) - though some wire mesh on the windows would fix this.

One afternoon there was a dead mouse on the bottom of the pool that was still there the next morning - I think this was just because it was a Sunday with no staff around - normally they're good with the pools/gardens.

Wifi remains almost unusable - extremely slow and poor signal.

I think we'll go somewhere else next time. I can put up with most things but the crap wifi is annoying to me as I need it for work.

Room Tip: Ask for seaview room in blocks 1-3. Avoid blocks 6-7 at all costs.

Still the best position in the resort. We did not suffer any noise problems.
Apartments clean and welcoming. Will return again. Restaurants on the beachfront very casual
But good value and relaxing. Only a short walk to the cita centre.

Room Tip: All rooms are sea view

Spend a week at Arco Iris and was very pleased. Playa del Ingels can be too much in terms of tourists, but this hotel is fortunately located a bit off the center, so you can enjoy a more quite atmosphere and view of Dunas de Maspalomas from the rooms.

The rooms are large and clean. Not everyday room cleaning though (unclear which days the cleaning ladies turns up, but it seems like 5 times / week).

Some of the pools are heated, so it is just a matter of trial and error to find out which are.

Rentning a car is recommended after a couple of days to get out of Playa del Ingels and see other parts of this beatiful island.

Having just returned from a one week stay (July 2012) Arco Iris Apartments are great value for money, clean with good facilities. Location is great as you are far enough from noise but close enough to walk to. We stayed in block three (7 in all) and was further away from restaurants which was not a problem. Five minutes walk to get there. Apartments cleaned each day with towels changed regularly. Safe/tv available on rental. Kitchenette was well stocked with toaster/microwave/pots and pans/two ring cooker.

Room Tip: Book blocks 1-3 Level 2/3 for sea view

Reviewed 11 June 2012

We stayed here in June 2012 and Dec 2010. I agree with the previous reviews -- the main advantage is the location.

This year we had trouble booking as the usual booking websites didn't have Arco Iris available and the reception said they couldn't take direct bookings. They told us to book via a German company called Schauinsland Reisen which we did. Their website was all in German but they can speak English if you email or call them. We saw their banners plastered over a lot of apartment blocks in Playa del Ingles during our 2012 visit, so if you have trouble booking then I'd recommend Googling their site.

These are the main disadvantages we found with Arco Iris:

Major noise issues for blocks 6 & 7 from bars on the beach. Definitely take ear plugs. We also had noise issues from neighbouring apartments due to poor soundproofing - staying on the top floor reduces this slightly. About 20% of the apartments are privately owned and were the source of apartment noise issues.

Internet (wifi) is extremely slow. This was €15/week but speed is only 0.2Mbps (checked multiple times on speedtest.net). Loading a page Tripadvisor reviews took around 2 minutes. The speed is 40 times slower than average UK broadband. You are also restricted to only one device. We had mobile phones, an ipad and laptop so this restriction was worked around by installing Connectify for Windows (which lets you create a new wifi network from an existing single wifi network connection). Though due to the slow speed we found visiting bars/restaurants with free wifi was the only practical solution.

Television hire (LG LCD TV in each room) is extortionately priced. There is only one English language channel available (CNN News). You need to pay to hire a power code and LG remote control. We took a power cord this year so we could plug in our laptop via HDMI but unfortunately they've disabled the manual controls on the side of the TV, so you need both the power cord and remote to use it.

Staff in the reception do the bare minimum to help and were unfriendly every time we dealt with them. The only exception was the elderly gardener - he was always jolly and friendly. The reception is only open for a few hours in the morning and afternoon - if you arrive after that then you'll be greeted by the gardener (who doesn't speak a word of English!)

Room numbering: there are six blocks, numbered 1-4 and 6-7. Each block has 3 floors and each floor has 7 rooms. Rooms are numbered XYZ where X is block number [1-4, 6-7], Y is floor number [1-3] and Z is the room number [1-7]. Each block has its own pool with cushioned sun chairs. You can use the pool of any blocks though most of the time the pools were not in use. We have never asked for a specific room number but I would ask if we stayed here again.

The best blocks for the view and avoding noise are 1-3. If I was booking again then I would completely avoid blocks 6 & 7 because the noise can be very bad from the bars in the beach shopping complex. We were kept awake to 3am on a Wednesday & Friday night by heavy bass/loud music from one bar. On other nights there wasn't a problem. Block 1 is closest to the Maspalomas dunes and block 7 is closest to the beach bars.

As far as floor level goes, level 1 is pool level with no sea view. Level 2 road level with a sea view. Level 3 has a better sea view but with view of ugly shopping complex if you are in blocks 6 or 7. You have to pay extra to get a sea view. We have stayed on level 2 and 3. I think 2 is the best level and lower numbered rooms (closer to road) are better.

As far as room number goes, 1 is closest to the road and 7 is closest to the sea, although you get a sea view from all rooms on levels 2 & 3. In block 1 we got sun on the balcony but in block 6 we got no sun. I would personally avoid rooms 121, 221, 321, 421, 621 and 724 because their door is right next to the block entrance door (from the road) and people return home late from bars and slam the entrance door. And as stated above, avoid blocks 6 & 7 if you can. In June 2012 we were told blocks 1-3 were closed for the summer (we were trying to transfer from our allocated room in block 6).

General info:

Parking is free on the street if you have a rental car, though avoid parking along side kerbs parked yellow and you have to pay for any parks surrounded with blue paint. It can be hard to find a park on weekends due to locals visiting the beach.

It's about 3 mins walk to the CITACentre (the one with the ugly child statue outside) - try Cafe Wein upstairs. It is about 15mins walk to the Yumbo Centre (Mamma Mia restaurant is good as are Es Fatal and Centre Stage bars. And of course there are the two famous cabaret bars too).

Room Tip: Avoid blocks 6 & 7. Take ear plugs in case of noise. Worth paying extra for sea view room

We chose this hotel using previous reviews. We were looking for QUIET clean 1-bedroom apartment near the beach, and this was the cheapest one that met all those requirements, according to trip-advisor and other reviews. Oh, and we wanted a reasonable level of cooking facilities.
How did it do in practise? Clean. Comfy beds. Attractive level of appearance. Reasonably sized kitchen with really good large fridge plus a freezer with 2 shelves....plenty of room for all those cold drinks and icecream! Hubby would have welcomed a kettle....he made tea via the microwave instead. Hint...R U also a tea-lover?, Then take your own tea-bags as they are expensive on the island, and weigh little on the flight out.
Near beach...yes. The Arco Iris is unusual as it comprises SEVEN buildings so some are closer to the (MANY) steps down to the beach...but none are far away. Almost all accomodation in the resort has MANY steps to the beach area, count it as standard here. The steps take you to the start of the beach restuarants, bars and shops. You can walk along here to get to the beach very close to the ocean....however at mealtimes (most-times!) you'll run the gauntlet of waiters encouraging you to eat at their establishment. You can avoid this by crossing a wider area of dunes at the start of the restuarants to get to the sea.
Quietness is not easy to get anywhere. Here we had people talking in corridor, on balconies etc late at night/into the early morning, as well as heavy doors shutting. Guess you get that everywhere. However, no noisy car-parks, youths nor loud music to disturb us. (Note, building No 7 has music from next-door hotel's outside cafe, but not too loud nor too late)
There's a key-card system here....operates your apartment door and electrics as well as the doors to each block....take your card down to the pool with you! A great feature was each block having an exit to the road on one side (for shops etc), as well as a gate from the lawns out to the promenade and beach. Brilliant!

Pool was cool and rarely used, so it felt like it was almost our private one! We paid extra for 'beach view'....1st or 2nd floor see some of the dunes and sea. Gound floors instead have terraces that open onto the pool and lawn areas. That may be useful for sunbed-bathing, although you may loose a sense of privacy. Buildings are slightly curved and slightly at an angle to each other (see google map), so each apartment/block will get the sun at slightly different times, but ALL apartments will get sun for a good proportion of the day.

Staff friendly and helpful. We arrived before 12am and room already ready for us. I THINK the opening hours of reception were 8-12am and 4 to about 7pm. If you are likely to arrive outside these times, do check if something can be arranged for you. If you decide to rent the safe, the price may also include the TV (special offer), and the sound effects of the safe brought us smiles most times we used it!
Like most places, there's a 'book-swap library' in foyer....most here were German books although a few were in English.
Overall assessment. We'd cheerfully use it again, as well as recommend it.

Room Tip: Corner suites overlook the sea and get the sun on 2 sides....don't know how you can get these ro...
